The Jay County Public Library invites our community to the Festival of Trees presented by the Jay County Chamber of Commerce! The Festival of Trees is a joyful and free display of Christmas trees decorated by Jay County nonprofits, service organizations, clubs, and municipalities for the public to enjoy.   A special kick-off celebration will be held on December 1 from 5-7 p.m. for the community! Everyone is welcome to come stroll through the library and enjoy viewing the beautifully decorated trees in the main areas. A Christmas story walk will coincide with the Christmas tree viewing where families can enjoy reading a story while walking through a magical winter wonderland. Families can also meet Santa and Mrs. Claus while enjoying live music throughout the evening. Free miniature artificial trees and stockings will be given away, while supplies last.   An interactive and educational Christmas tree farm experience will be provided in the Community Room. Families will have an opportunity to enjoy various fun activities such as tree identification, making a pine tree sensory bottle, decorating a Rice Krispie Christmas tree, making a nature ornament, and learning about famous Christmas trees and history. Begin the magic of the Christmas season with a visit to the library, and support our local community Christmas tree display. No sign up is required for this event.   If you can’t make it on December 1, the trees will be available for viewing from December 1 – 30. Come to JCPL during normal service hours and see a magical winter wonderland during Winterfest and throughout the holidays. The space will sparkle with beautifully decorated trees, each one representing the heart and spirit of our community. Stroll through and admire the displays and enjoy the holiday cheer and vote for your favorites. Interactive STREAM Studio is back! Purdue Extension 4-H & JCPL are hosting an Interactive STREAM Studio! Students in grades 3-6 can learn about science, technology, reading, engineering, art, and math through a hands-on progress of making. We will be exploring computer science, money, science and math in art and cooking, and more!  The event is free and all students attending any school in Jay County are welcome to attend. STREAM Studio students will come on either the 1st or 2nd Wednesdays of each month from 3:00-4:30 p.m., and students may sign up for their school’s session online. Space is limited. A bus from Jay Schools will be available, but children will need to be picked up from the library. There will also be both plugged and unplugged activities to teach pattern recognition, algorithms, and other scientific and computational thinking processes. Students who have a Jay County Public Library card or a Dunkirk Public Library card are encouraged to bring it each week to check out library materials. *Please be aware we will be using valuable equipment. Appropriate conduct is a must! Your child can be dismissed from the program if failure to follow the rules occurs. *It is recommended students bring a Chromebook or other personal device. Sign up information will be available at the library. Please complete and turn in registration by October 1 to Purdue Extension. Gather a team of up to six people you must have at least a minimum of three on your team to compete. There will be three one-hour sessions: 3:30-4:30, 5:00-6:00, and 6:30-7:30. Kids ages 8-12 are invited to come to the library for a fun night of slumber party activities on Thursday, January 29 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. The Community Room will be divided into two sections. One side will be a glam party with nail stickers, hair brush decorating, and more! The other side will be fort building, Nintendo Switch games, and more. Kids are encouraged to wear their pajamas and come out for a night of fun. Space is limited and registration is required.
