Mitzi Shore the owner of The Comedy Store urged him to stay in Hollywood, recognizing his unique talent. In this 90-minute comprehensive workshop, we will discuss the art of hiring and firing in today’s world. There is a common saying in employment law, hire slowly, fire quickly.  While in a perfect world you would have the luxury of slowly sorting through a dozen applications, it may seem like there is a shortage of workers capable and willing to work.   The tendency is to hire quickly before the candidate gets away and a hesitation to terminate a poor performing employee. Despite the seemingly limited job market, the rule of hire slowly and fire quickly is vitally important, especially for a small to midsize company.  We will discuss the art of hiring slowly and firing quickly so that you can build a successful team that aligns with your vision of success. Remember, hiring and firing correctly is an art and not a science.  There is no single way to hire and fire, but there are any number of ways to do it badly.  That is what we will be discussing.   ABOUT THE SPEAKER   Kristin Tauras Attorney and Co-Managing Partner of McKenna Storer law firm Kristin Tauras brings 30 years of experience in the area of employment law. She has worked as on-demand corporate counsel for small to mid-size businesses, drafting their employment policies, contracts and handbooks. She has also litigated employment cases before the Illinois Human Rights Commission, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (“EEEOC”) and Department of Labor (“DOL”) as well as appeared on behalf of employers in Illinois state and federal courts as well as federal courts throughout the country. She has extensive experience defending employers against all types of discrimination cases, including gender, race, disability, and sexual harassment claims.  More recently, she has been defending employers in overtime wage disputes and assisting employers to properly identify their exempt employees under the Department of Labor’s rules to avoid unfair practices claims. McKenna Storer is a litigation and transactional firm that has offices in Woodstock and Chicago, and services the entire State of Illinois. This event is part of our series of THE 101 Small Business Workshops, brought to you in conjunction with THE 101 Retail Incubator Program and through a partnership of the City of Woodstock, the Illinois Small Business Development Center at McHenry County Collge and the Woodstock Area Chamber of Commerce & Industry. Yesterday and Today: The Interactive Beatles Experience is not just another Beatles tribute band – it’s a unique experience that puts the audience in control. Performed by brothers Billy, Matthew and Ryan McGuigan and their band, the show relies on the audience to choose the entire set list. Before the show, audience members are asked to fill out a request card with their name, favorite Beatles song, and the reason why they chose that song. Minutes before the show starts, these cards are collected and a custom setlist is created based on the audience’s requests. Throughout the night, the band weaves the audience’s personal stories, and the McGuigan’s own heartfelt memories attached to the Beatles’ music, into the performance, creating a one-of-a-kind narrative that makes every show different.

Participating Woodstock businesses will hide an ornamental pickle on a tree (or other creative location) in your business. The pickle ornament is available from the Chamber, or if you have a pickle ornament from previous years, you can use that. The scavenger hunt begins with a kickoff event on Sunday, Nov. 10 from 12:00-3:00 p.m., then runs through Monday, Dec. 9. Scavenger hunters will be given clues to find the hidden pickles throughout Woodstock. Participants will have to find a set number of pickles (this will depend on how many businesses participate, we had 45 last year!) to complete the scavenger hunt. Scavenger hunters turn in their game card to receive a Legend of the Pickle craft ornament for their own tree and are entered into a drawing for a chance to win some GREAT prizes! Prizes will be awarded before the holidays. Participation fee is $25 for Chamber members, $40 for General Business Registration. Businesses do not have to provide a prize. Pickle location registration closes at 5:00 pm on Friday, November 1. We will include you as a Legend of the Pickle Scavenger Hunt location and add you to the clue list. We would love to see all of our local businesses with public access participate!

Pickles will be hidden at all participating businesses throughout Woodstock for the duration of the event.
