Movie Matinee: Frederick Law Olmsted: Designing America Thursday, December 18th, 4:00 p.m. Frederick Law Olmsted helped define landscape architecture as both a profession and an art, partnering early in his career with Calvert Vaux. Widely considered the most influential figure in the field, Olmsted co-designed Central Park, led preservation efforts at Yosemite and Niagara Falls, designed the U.S. Capitol Grounds, planned Boston’s “Emerald Necklace,” and developed park systems across the country. His visionary parkway network in Buffalo—the first integrated system of its kind—is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Believing parks were essential to city life, Olmsted pioneered an early “environmental ethic,” recognizing the importance of public green spaces long before modern conservation movements emerged. Frederick Law Olmsted: Designing America celebrates his lasting legacy through vivid imagery and insightful storytelling, revealing how his designs continue to shape communities and inspire urban planning today.  The film runs approximately 57 minutes, is rated G, free and open to the public, and made possible through Kanopy.

Chapter 250: Reading America’s Story Together (Youth) Thursday, January 29th, 5:00 p.m. Chapter 250: Reading America’s Story Together is a community book club that explores the American Revolution through shared reading, discussion, and film. The youth group, open to participants ages eight through fourteen, will meet on Thursday, January 29th at 5:00 p.m., at the Condit Branch, with a virtual option available via Zoom. This month’s selection will be “Revolutionary Mary: The True Story of One Woman, the Declaration of Independence, and America's Fight for Freedom” by Karen Blumenthal and “Her Name Was Mary Katherine: The Only Woman Whose Name Is on the Declaration of Independence” by Ella Schwartz. Both books tell the inspiring true story of Mary Katharine Goddard, a courageous colonial printer who risked her safety to publish the Declaration of Independence, boldly including her own name and becoming the only woman whose name appears on it. Before the discussion, participants will view a 26-minute screening reel from the upcoming 2025 PBS documentary “American Revolution” by Ken Burns, Sarah Botstein, and David Schmidt. The preview offers an engaging overview of the era and includes an introduction by Ken Burns. Participants will also view a 7-minute reel from the Library of Congress’s Rare Books and Special Collections highlighting the Goddard Declaration of Independence. As a pioneering civil rights attorney, Marshall achieved a historic victory in Brown v. Board of Education (1954), ending legal segregation in public schools and reshaping the course of American history. For two decades—through the Great Depression and World War II—Marshall traveled throughout the Jim Crow South, courageously challenging segregation case by case. Despite threats, violence, and countless barriers, he secured more Supreme Court victories than any lawyer in U.S. history. His groundbreaking work laid the foundation for the Civil Rights Movement and helped pave the way for future leaders such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks.
