The Polish composer-pianist Fryderyk Chopin (1810-1849) revolutionized the way one played and composed for the piano. Listeners at the time understood that Chopin was creating something radically new. Chopin expert David Kasunic, Professor of Music at Occidental College, gives us a guided tour through Chopin’s music and piano technique to uncover Chopin's revolutionary approach to the piano and its legacy. David Kasunic is a Professor of Musicology at Occidental College in Los Angeles, California, and the Director of its John Branca Institute for Music. He is the author of many articles and book chapters on Chopin, most recently on the influence of Meyerbeer’s ballet music on Chopin’s Parisian waltzes and on the phenomenon of tubercular singing, which examines the relationship between early nineteenth-century diagnostic pathology and music analysis. Forthcoming are articles on Chopin and philosophy and on Robert Schumann’s reception of Chopin, as well as the Chopin chapter for the Oxford Handbook on Musical Variation. Patrick Cannon is a retired journalist, editor and publicist. Along with photographer James Caulfield, he has published nine books on Chicago architects and architecture. Three of them have been awarded the Gold Medal in architecture at the Independent Publisher Book Awards. For the first time, the book includes original photography and descriptions of every surviving structure designed by one of America’s greatest architects, Lous Sullivan. NANCY MATSUMOTO is a third-generation Japanese American writer and editor based in Toronto, with a BA in English literature from Pomona College. She writes about food and drink, agriculture, Japanese American culture, art, and history, and the environment. Her latest book is Reaping What She Sows: How Women Are Rebuilding Our Broken Food System.  MARIKO ARATANI was born in Nagoya, Japan. She is a Japanese instructor, translator/ editor, and graduate of Tokyo Geijutsu Daigaku University of Fine Arts and Music and University of Wisconsin (MA). A former Japanese instructor at Fordham University in New York, her publications include “The Ink Dark Moon” and “White Flash Black Rain” . KYOKO MIYABE was born in Yokohama, Japan and received her Ph.D. in English Literature at Cambridge University, U.K. She is Chair of the Humanities and Science Department at School of Visual Arts, New York. As a practicing artist, she has exhibited in galleries and art institutions in New York and Philadelphia.  Free and open to the public. Donations are welcome! Our July Business After Hours (BAH) will be hosted by the Oak Park and River Forest Day Nursery.  Join us for a night of networking and hors d'oeuvres in this scenic BAH setting with their fun staff, to enjoy summer in their beautiful yard.     Tell Me About This Month's Host Throughout its long history, The Day Nursery has retained its original mission of providing “quality, nurturing child care and preschool provided by a professional and caring staff in a safe environment for families in the community.” It remains committed to offering the highest quality early childhood education to children of working parents. The beautiful Oak Park Conservatory, operated by the Park District of Oak Park with the support of the Friends of the Oak Park Conservatory.     Tell Me About This Month's Host The Oak Park Conservatory draws over 40,000 visitors annually as one of the top three historical sites in Oak Park.  It offers a rich atmosphere of flora and fauna throughout three indoor showrooms, including the Mediterranean room, the Tropical Room and the Desert Room.  The building is surrounded by gardens as well, representing Illinois native ecosystems in the Elsie Jacobsen Discovery Garden and the Rubinstein Garden.  Come spend an evening in this beautiful setting!  You can also expect tasty hors d'oeuvres, raffle fun, and dozens and dozens of locals from the business, government, and nonprofit sectors, gathered to build relationships and enjoy a splendid evening together.  Please join us!
