Harmony Amongst Chaos by Ana Vitek will be on view November 4-December 6 in the Main Library Gallery.Art Reception: November 8, 1-2:30 pm, Main Library GalleryARTIST STATEMENT"I am lifelong artist deeply inspired by movement, changes of light, fleeting feelings, imagined moments,  graphic design and global travel.My work is an expression of the energy and emotions embodied in places and points in time: energy and emotions that are often fleeting and transitional. Often representing the transition between specific states, decisions or actions, such points in time embody the hope of possibility of situations that have yet to happen or echo with the energy of interactions that just happened.My painting process takes many hours, researching, taking reference photos, and doing initial sketches, then transferring onto canvas or wood panel, building the composition with layers of paint, working to capture the energy of a moment in time on the canvas, and capture the feelings of that fleeting moment. I love to paint using oil and acrylic and also to experiment with Encaustic, Hand Felting and Wax Resist Techniques.The  energy of the world around us fascinate me, the mesmerizing colors of sunlight , energy, and light in darkness. The Hovering Brush by Jonathan Franklin will be on view December 9-January 17 at the Main Library Gallery.Artist Talk and Reception: December 13, 2-4 pm, Main Library Gallery RSVPFrom the artist"There are too many artists to mention whose work I have admired over years and whose command of their subjects is as unique as it is formidable. Pablo Picassoâs Cubistic explorations portrayed his subjects from different perspectives at the same time. Egon Schieleâs sensuously contorted figures were enhanced even more by his subjectsâ expressive hands. Max Beckmannâs paintings used stylized space and settings to explore myths and allegories. David Hockneyâs draftsmanship was as effortless as it was intimate. Saul Steinbergâs cartoons were infused with wit and invention. "Like the great artists I cited above, I too use the paint brush to sketch some of my more muddled and unresolved ideas onto an empty canvas and then over a period of days, weeks, months, and even years, manage to transform those blobs of paint into recognizable shapes that evolve into painted portraits."It is to the simple paint brush that I dedicate this show. In each painting, questions can be asked, like: Why is that brush being wielded like a conductorâs baton? Why in another painting is it being held like a weapon? Is that character using a brush to paint his face? Is the brush actually a musical instrument or a magic wand? "My answer is, who knows? Painting is a mysterious act where there are no absolutes, only more questions. Perhaps the answers are hovering around the brush."About the artistJonathan Franklin was born in Michigan but spent much of his childhood in Vietnam, Bangladesh, and Indonesia where his father worked as a civil engineer. After studying art at the University of Michigan, he moved to Israel where he lived on a kibbutz and began painting and later worked as a printmaker. Jonathan has worked as a set designer and painted many local murals. His other job was as an art educator conducting residencies and workshops in public and private schools throughout Chicago. As a visual artist for 50 years, Jonathan has concentrated mainly on painting and works on paper, and over the past five years has self-published over 100 books documenting his artwork.For more about the artist, visit jfranklinart.com.

Sublimation is a process that uses heat and pressure to transfer dye onto polyester-based materials.  In this workshop, come learn how to design a full-color image to print and then sublimate onto a blank ceramic mug.  We will use Canva.com to design our mugs, then print them using the Brother SP1 Sublimation Printer.  After the design is printed, it can be sublimated onto the blank ceramic using the mug press.Patrons under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult (18+) caregiver for this event.In order to maximize our time for design and sublimation projects, please register for a free Canva.com account prior to attending the workshop.The Creative Studio is located on the third floor of the Main Library.

Artist Talk and Reception Artist Jonathan Franklin will lead a gallery talk through his exhibit, The Hovering Brush. Light refreshments will be provided.The Hovering Brush by Jonathan Franklin will be on view December 9-January 17 in the Main Library Gallery.From the artist"There are too many artists to mention whose work I have admired over years and whose command of their subjects is as unique as it is formidable. Pablo Picassoâs Cubistic explorations portrayed his subjects from different perspectives at the same time. Egon Schieleâs sensuously contorted figures were enhanced even more by his subjectsâ expressive hands. Max Beckmannâs paintings used stylized space and settings to explore myths and allegories. David Hockneyâs draftsmanship was as effortless as it was intimate. Saul Steinbergâs cartoons were infused with wit and invention. "Like the great artists I cited above, I too use the paint brush to sketch some of my more muddled and unresolved ideas onto an empty canvas and then over a period of days, weeks, months, and even years, manage to transform those blobs of paint into recognizable shapes that evolve into painted portraits."It is to the simple paint brush that I dedicate this show. In each painting, questions can be asked, like: Why is that brush being wielded like a conductorâs baton? Why in another painting is it being held like a weapon? Is that character using a brush to paint his face? Is the brush actually a musical instrument or a magic wand? "My answer is, who knows? Painting is a mysterious act where there are no absolutes, only more questions. Perhaps the answers are hovering around the brush."About the artistJonathan Franklin was born in Michigan but spent much of his childhood in Vietnam, Bangladesh, and Indonesia where his father worked as a civil engineer. After studying art at the University of Michigan, he moved to Israel where he lived on a kibbutz and began painting and later worked as a printmaker. Jonathan has worked as a set designer and painted many local murals. His other job was as an art educator conducting residencies and workshops in public and private schools throughout Chicago. As a visual artist for 50 years, Jonathan has concentrated mainly on painting and works on paper, and over the past five years has self-published over 100 books documenting his artwork.For more about the artist, visit jfranklinart.com.
