With a new theme each month and activities that engage the senses and spark creativity, Garden Playtime is an enjoyable and enriching activity for families throughout the spring, summer and fall. March: Joyful Movement Kick off Garden Playtime with music, movement, and hands-on fun! Dance at our music party station, create a colorful wind sock to take home, and explore a variety of sounds at our sensory bins. Families can also explore instruments made from plants and experiment with sounds inspired by nature. April: Patterns Everywhere! Celebrate National Haiku Poetry Day with us this April as we combine art with nature. Come learn how natural patterns create interesting textures and then mimic those textures in art. Explore forest scenes in our sensory bins, paint with natural items at our mural station, and create your own recycled art mosaic to take home. May: Mythical Creatures What magical creatures might you discover in Niki de Saint Phalle’s bold and playful sculptures? Venture with us into a fantastical world of mythical animals and imaginative forms inspired by her art. Visit the mermaids in our sensory bins, uncover hidden dragon treasure in kinetic sand, and create your own slithering snake at the art station. June: Pollinator Friends Celebrate National Pollinator Week with us this June. Learn about the valuable role of diverse pollinator species in our ecosystems, and investigate these fascinating critters up close. Join us for a bug tic-tac-toe game, dig your hands into our “bees in a hive” sensory bins and homemade scented playdough, and decorate a “bug rock” to take home!   July: Animal Adventures This July, Garden Playtime takes inspiration from the lively animal sculptures found in Niki de Saint Phalle’s artwork. Families are invited to dress up as animals, create a shared animal print mural, and design your own unique animal to take home. August: Wonderful Water From fountains to flowing forms, Niki de Saint Phalle’s art celebrates the joyful movement of water. Families can enjoy water sensory bins, water lily art, frog pond shaving cream exploration, and frog games on the Children’s Garden lawn. Be sure to cool down in the Splash Pad before you head home! September: Golden Grows In honor of the Garden’s 50th Anniversary, September’s Garden Playtime celebrates the golden colors found throughout the landscape. Families are invited to make sunflower art, scoop and pour in sunflower rice sensory bins, and paint with corn cobs at our mural station. October: Harvest Time This month’s activities are inspired by the harvest season. From delicious food aromas to the crunching sounds of leaves, relax into the nostalgia of autumn as we wind down Garden Playtime for the year. Save some time to hunt around for your favorite Scarecrows in the Garden.

By age 17, she knew she would embrace cooking as a profession. In 2004, she moved to Seville, Spain, to study at one of the best culinary schools, Escuela de Hostelería de Sevilla and lived and worked in Spain for five years. In her earliest professional experience, she learned from the amazing team at El Cingle in Barcelona, a MICHELIN-starred restaurant. Laura then moved to Atlanta in 2009 to work with the esteemed Buckhead Life Group. Laura joined R.O Hospitality, first at Table & Main in 2012 as a Line Cook, before opening Osteria Mattone as the Sous Chef in 2013 and serving in that capacity for eight years. When R.O. Hospitality opened “tapas and tacos” concept Casa Robles in Roswell, Chef Laura embraced her Salvadoran roots and joined that project as opening Executive Chef. Saturdays at 10 a.m.: Drop by the Fuqua Conservatory lobby to watch the frogs jump into action when presented with their meals. An amphibian specialist will share fun facts and answer questions about these captivating creatures. Public frog feedings allow visitors to observe one of the most interesting aspects of these amphibians – their feeding behaviors. Most frogs have long sticky tongues that shoot out at prey. Some, like Poison frogs, are able to do this with such incredible speed and accuracy that all visitors notice are flies disappearing. Others, like the fringed leaf frog, are dramatic feeders that stuff the crickets into their mouths with their hands.

Amazing metro-Atlanta teachers are invited to join us for a complimentary summer evening planned just for them! Stroll through the Dorothy Chapman Fuqua Conservatory and Fuqua Orchid Center to see our world-class interpretations of tropical, desert, and high-elevation environments and marvel at the colorful diversity of plants found throughout our 30-acre urban oasis. Don’t miss the return of Niki in the Garden featuring monumental, colorful sculptures. This summer, we will feature 41 works in what’s believed to be the largest showing of the artist’s art ever presented in North America. Watch the Atlanta Shakespeare Company’s for a youth performance of Midsummer, Junior!, a 45-minute version of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream performed by five charming and energetic professional actors and puppets at 6:30 p.m.! Audience engagement abounds in this delightful, abbreviated rendition of one of William Shakespeare’s most beloved stories. Theatre for the Very Young productions are appropriate for Ages 4-7 and are available to book for live performances at local schools, camp programs and other venues in Spring/ Summer 2024. ASC also offers tours for Pre-K to high school students during the school year. Visit Atlanta Shakespeare for more information. Listen to artists from the Atlanta Opera perform a selection of opera classics along with fun musical theater surprises at 4:30 p.m. The Atlanta Opera serves over 70,000 students in the Metro Atlanta Area and throughout the state of Georgia every year and they seek to inspire creativity, stimulate critical conversations, promote an enduring appreciation of the arts, and create audiences for the future.
