Enjoy a variety of live performances by some of Atlanta’s most beloved children’s musicians and storytellers in this engaging series. Shows take place Fridays, May through September at 10 and 10:45 a.m.   The story of Contrary Mary’s Garden comes to life through the immersive storytelling of Mama Koku, author of Little Black Fairy and Other Very Fairy Stories, Poems, Rhythms & Rhymes.  Young audience members will become the seeds, soil, sun, water, and of course the many flowers of this classic nursery rhyme! In a year of anniversaries, what better way to celebrate the Garden’s 50th than an encore exhibition of artist Niki de Saint Phalle’s monumental sculptures that debuted at the Garden 20 years ago this spring. The French sculptor, who died in 2002, was known as one of the first female sculptors of massive works, particularly her “Nanas” – light-hearted, whimsical and colorful large-scale sculptures of females, animals and monsters. This year’s exhibition, presented May 9 – September 6, will feature 41 works in what’s believed to be the largest showing of the artist’s art ever presented in North America. Most will be on loan from the Niki Charitable Art Foundation and others from private collections. “Those who saw the 2006 exhibit are going to relish experiencing these fun, joyful sculptures again, and those who didn’t are in for a major treat!” said Garden President & CEO Mary Pat Matheson. The often-playful, extremely colorful sculptures range from Grand Step Totem, weighing in at 2,000 pounds, and the Large Yelling Man, towering as 16.5 feet, to small wall hangings of reliefs measuring 2 feet square. The most iconic of the pieces – all displayed throughout the Garden as well as Conservatory, Orchid Center and Gardenhouse Gallery – will be The Three Graces frolicking in the Skyline Garden pond. In addition, an interpretive exhibit on the artist and her work will be on display near the entrance to the Orchid Display House.

Saturdays at 10 a.m.: Drop by the Fuqua Conservatory lobby to watch the frogs jump into action when presented with their meals. An amphibian specialist will share fun facts and answer questions about these captivating creatures. Public frog feedings allow visitors to observe one of the most interesting aspects of these amphibians – their feeding behaviors. Most frogs have long sticky tongues that shoot out at prey. Some, like Poison frogs, are able to do this with such incredible speed and accuracy that all visitors notice are flies disappearing. Others, like the fringed leaf frog, are dramatic feeders that stuff the crickets into their mouths with their hands.

Gainesville High School’s fine arts program dramatically presents a teen edition of Hadestown by Anaïs Mitchell. This folk opera reimagines the ancient Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, intertwining it with the story of Hades and Persephone, set in a Depression-era-inspired world with jazz and folk music. Learn about the valuable role of diverse pollinator species in our ecosystems, and investigate these fascinating critters up close. Join us for a bug tic-tac-toe game, dig your hands into our “bees in a hive” sensory bins and homemade scented playdough, and decorate a “bug rock” to take home!   July: Animal Adventures This July, Garden Playtime takes inspiration from the lively animal sculptures found in Niki de Saint Phalle’s artwork. Families are invited to dress up as animals, create a shared animal print mural, and design your own unique animal to take home. August: Wonderful Water From fountains to flowing forms, Niki de Saint Phalle’s art celebrates the joyful movement of water. Families can enjoy water sensory bins, water lily art, frog pond shaving cream exploration, and frog games on the Children’s Garden lawn. Be sure to cool down in the Splash Pad before you head home! September: Golden Grows In honor of the Garden’s 50th Anniversary, September’s Garden Playtime celebrates the golden colors found throughout the landscape. Families are invited to make sunflower art, scoop and pour in sunflower rice sensory bins, and paint with corn cobs at our mural station. October: Harvest Time This month’s activities are inspired by the harvest season. From delicious food aromas to the crunching sounds of leaves, relax into the nostalgia of autumn as we wind down Garden Playtime for the year. He broadened his skills at Gwinnett Technical College, which he credits with giving him a “solid grasp of the fundamentals.”  Upon graduation he focused his career in on fine dining, working his way up the kitchen ladder at some of Atlanta’s most-respected restaurants, including Canoe, Aria, and the nationally-acclaimed Gunshow. Chef Alan joined The Deer and the Dove in 2023, to work with chef/owner and James Beard award winner, Terry Koval. While Byer’s confesses he admired Chef Terry’s background as a skateboarder, it was his dedication to honest, family values and his food philosophy: the Deer and The Dove receives the highest rating of any Atlanta restaurant when it comes to sourcing food from local, family farms.   In addition, the restaurant’s approach to authentic cooking – featuring a wood burning hearth – was exactly the rustic style of cuisine that Chef Alan knew he could excel with. And excel he did, being named Chef d’ Cuisine of The Deer and The Dove in 2024.     In his role as Chef d’ Cuisine at The Deer and The Dove,  Alan supports a number of community and charitable organizations, including: The Giving Kitchen, Georgia Organics, Slow Food  Atlanta, Global Growers Wholesome Wave and Les Dames d’ Escoffier.

Beyond Beauty: The Wildlife Value of Natives and Native Cultivars in Mt. Cuba Center’s Trial Garden Join Sam Hoadley, the Manager of Horticultural Research at Mt. Cuba Center, as he highlights native plant species and cultivars from Mt. Cuba’s trials that will make beautiful and ecologically valuable additions to your garden. Take a deep dive into the insect and pollinator observations from the concluded evaluations of Monarda, Phlox, Echinacea, wild hydrangea, Vernonia, and Solidago and get a preview of the pollinator data from ongoing trials including oakleaf hydrangeas and Pycnanthemum. In addition, get a sneak peek at the Asclepias trial which is being evaluated for both pollinator value and for its capacity as a larval host plant for monarch caterpillars. Sam Hoadley is the Manager of Horticultural Research at Mt. Cuba Center where he evaluates native plant species, old and new cultivars, and hybrids in the Trial Garden. Sam earned his degree in Sustainable Landscape Horticulture from the University of Vermont. You can learn more about Sam and Mt. After discovering her passion for hospitality while working at Uncle Julio’s in Buckhead, she left college to pursue a culinary career full time.Hurst trained at Buckhead Life Restaurant Group’s Atlanta Fish Market and Kyma, where she spent five years under executive chef Pano Karatassos, rising from line cook to sous chef. In 2022, she won the “Tiny But Mighty” episode of Food Network’s Chopped.As head chef at Cattle Shed, Hurst has helped shape the restaurant into an award-winning destination, earning honors including Best Overall Restaurant at Taste of Alpharetta’s People’s Choice Awards and Best Forsyth Restaurant in Atlanta Magazine’s 2024 Readers’ Choice Awards.
