They have been the subject of myths, fables, stories, and legends – some more believable than others. Join the Michael C. Carlos Museum, Georgia Aquarium, and Zoo Atlanta as we explore the science behind the legends surrounding these fantastic beasts and create some of our own. Key science topics include fossils, animal features, adaptations, and classification. Projects can be easily integrated with art, geography, math, and language arts writing standards while engaging student interest and creativity. Presented by the Atlanta Botanical Garden, Atlanta History Center, Georgia Aquarium, High Museum of Art, Michael C. Carlos Museum, and Zoo Atlanta     About the Atlanta STEAM Series: Teachers are invited to enhance their STEAM curriculum by incorporating Project-Based Learning and Design Thinking. In each session of the series, museum educators from Atlanta cultural institutions highlight ways to connect learning across subjects. Teachers will be provided with instructional resources and entered into a drawing for tickets to participating organizations.      Session 1: Creating Exhibitions using Design Thinking  (Atlanta Botanical Gardens, Atlanta History Center, High Museum of Art)  Saturday, January 24 | 9:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.  Location: High Museum of Art    Session 2: Legend has It: An Exploration of Animals and their Depictions Across Cultures  (Georgia Aquarium, Michael C. Carlos Museum, and Zoo Atlanta)  Saturday, February 7 | 9:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.  Location: Michael C. Event Location: All Galleries Department / Organization: Carlos Museum Membership Link: https://carlos.emory.edu/join Relaxed Mornings are for anyone who would appreciate a calmer visit to the museum. Scheduled on the first Saturday of each month, Relaxed Mornings are primarily for visitors with sensory needs or those who may prefer a more relaxed experience, along with their families, friends, and care givers.      Sensory friendly bags are available for all guests at the Information Desk on Level One. These bags include an assortment of items to help visitors better enjoy our galleries. Three types of fidget toys and noise cancelling headphones are included for those who may need additional sensory support. There is also a KultureCity lanyard that guests can wear, which includes QR codes to helpful information. For those who may need assistance with sharing their needs or feelings, we provide an emotion/needs card that allows guests to communicate with staff.      Signs throughout the museum indicate a potentially louder space using the phrase “Headphone Zone.” Quiet spaces are located in the lobby on Level Two and the balcony on Level Three. A pre-visit social story can be found here.     Relaxed Mornings are scheduled during regular museum hours at times that generally experience less traffic and no other programs are scheduled.

Event Location: Carlos Museum, Ackerman Hall Department / Organization: Carlos Museum Membership Link: https://carlos.emory.edu/join Before Spanish colonists introduced scissors to Central and South America, people wove fabric in one large piece rather than cutting and stitching it. But in the 20th century, the Guna people of Panamá began embracing cloth-cutting as a powerful new art form. Using layered fabrics, reverse applique, and intricate geometric designs, Guna women created dulemolas—vibrant rectangular panels that form the front and back of traditional blouses. These panels often feature stylized animals or symbolic patterns that reflect their cultural resilience.  Come learn about this unique textile tradition and create your own one-of-a-kind dulemola or “mola” using different fabrics!    Sunday FUNday is a free drop-in program for all families and includes admission to the museum. Event Location: Board Room Department / Organization: Carlos Museum Membership Link: https://carlos.emory.edu/join Join Brendan Ozawa-de Silva, associate teaching professor at the Center for Contemplative Science and Compassion-Based Ethics, for a discussion of Pachinko, the award-winning novel by Min Jin Lee, whose masterful writing follows four generations of a Korean immigrant family’s fight to control their destiny in 20th-century Japan, exploring narratives of resilience, loss, love, and compassion.      This program will take place over two nights, February 16 and 23, and registration is required.   Fee: $35 for members, $45 for nonmembers. The cost of the program includes a copy of the book.     “Pachinko suggests that in immigrant narratives, work can be a trap as well. Financial freedom might offer stability, but it does not protect from injustice, discrimination or violence. Lee shines in highlighting the complexities of being an immigrant and striving for a better life when resigned to a second-class status. Participants will explore their own experiences and emotions related to water and courage.     For children ages 3-6 with an accompanying adult. Space is limited, and registration is required. The cost of the program includes all artmaking materials and admission to the museum.    Fee: $8 per person for members and $12 per person for nonmembers.

Founded in 2021, the Pellom McDaniels Sports History Program is an annual, campus-wide event that unites students, staff, and faculty for interdisciplinary dialogue on race, athletics, and African American history. Honoring the legacy of the late Pellom McDaniels III—curator of African American collections at Emory’s Rose Library—the program highlights the Library’s premier African Americans and Sports collection while connecting the Emory community with influential voices shaping today’s sports landscape. This year’s program aligns with Emory’s Footwork initiative and Atlanta’s role as a host city for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, spotlighting athletes as agents of change and the ongoing pursuit of equity in professional sports in the southeast. Two exhibitions will be open for viewing before and after the event: “Footwork: Celebrating Soccer, Culture and Community,” just outside the Jones Room in the Schatten Gallery on Level 3 of the Woodruff Library, explores soccer as culture and identity. Drawing on Emory’s scholarship, collections and global partnerships, the exhibition traces Atlanta’s intertwined stories of soccer, civil rights and globalism from 1968 to today, showing how our region, our teams and even our sneakers express who we are. Footwork: Where We Gather, featuring traditional sports photographer Walter Iooss and contemporary artist Sheila Pree Bright—whose new series celebrates Atlanta’s sports culture—will be open for viewing at the Michael C. The ancient Greeks ground aromatic plants and resins and suspended them in olive oil, while ancient Egyptians combined materials such as lily, frankincense, myrrh, cinnamon bark, and thyme with animal fats to create perfumes believed to soothe the body, focus the mind, and restore balance. In this Student Studio, take a pause from your day as you explore the history of scent and create your own signature fragrance using a variety of scented oils—an opportunity to slow down, engage your senses, and support personal well-being through creative practice.    Student Studio is a drop-in program and like admission to the Carlos Museum, is always free for Emory students. First come, first served, while supplies last.
