Learn how to use two free online resources from the library to make more informed financial decisions. In this class, we’ll explore Weiss Ratings, which provides independent ratings for banks, insurance companies, stocks, and more. We’ll also look at FinancialFit, a tool that offers easy-to-understand lessons, calculators, and guides on topics like budgeting, credit, saving, and managing debt. This introductory session will show you how to access these resources through the library and use them to build practical financial knowledge. As one of our Financial Literacy Month series adult programs, attendees will also receive a free book voucher for our Library Store, sponsored by the Friends of the Athens-Clarke County Library! Registration is required.

Please join the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce as we celebrate the ribbon cutting for The Firefly Farmstop.  The Firefly Farmstop is a new brick and mortar grocery selling only Georgia (Athens if possible!) grown and produced items. Located directly adjacent to the Firefly Trail in Winterville, this new shop will also provide a community gathering spot. In keeping with the non-profit mission of the Marigold Collective, they are intentional about supporting farms and producers in the community in an effort to address root cause issues within the current food system.  Revenue from this store not only supports local growers and businesses but also funds education and distribution programs, taking steps toward equal food access for all.

We’ll explore a creative fusion of Southern comfort and vibrant Mediterranean flavors. Together we’ll prepare a reimagined version of the classic Southern dish, shrimp and grits, layering in bright herbs, citrus, and olive oil inspired by Mediterranean cuisine. Participants will learn how to cook creamy, perfectly seasoned grits while building a bold shrimp dish featuring garlic, fresh herbs, tomatoes, and other Mediterranean elements that complement the richness of this Southern staple. A unique recipe that won 2nd Place in the Georgia Shrimp and Grits Festival. Throughout the class, we’ll cover essential techniques including: Cooking smooth, creamy grits Properly sautéing shrimp Building balanced flavor with herbs, acid, and spices Combining regional culinary traditions into a cohesive dish By the end of the class, you'll enjoy the finished dish together and leave with the recipe, techniques, and inspiration to recreate this Mediterranean-Southern fusion at home. Perfect for home cooks of all skill levels who enjoy bold flavors, seafood, and creative takes on classic dishes. Wine pairings are available with this class.
