We encountered strangeness and difference at every turn, but the sunlight, sky, and green nature of the subtropical culture always gave me warm inspiration. I have lived in South Florida for a decade now compressing and symbolizing this into color-rich cubes representing home, the strangeness of being different from my native country, and the process of adapting. Gradually, I developed a series of portraits exploring the signifiers of human nature. Humanoid figures are portrayed as childrenâs dolls with exaggerated heads and smaller torsos and are centered and anchored as if trying to root themselves into the frame. They reflect child-like vulnerability where the feelings of dread, loneliness, and weakness to the familiar/unfamiliar world are present. Dimensional crystalline shapes simultaneously create and break the form symbolizing complex units that both comprise and undermine identity. Color is bold and convincing, resembling that of nationality, yet it doesnât reveal the true origin of the figure. Intro to Photography December 17 | 12pm-4pm Whether youâre picking up a camera for the very first time or brushing up on your skills, this two-day workshop is designed to help you feel more confident, creative, and inspired behind the lens. Weâll begin with the foundations.Â Learning your camera, exploring key settings, and understanding techniques that apply across different styles of photography. Together, weâll focus on three core areas: portraiture, landscape, and personal projects. Here, you can explore which direction excites you most. In this intensive session, youâll learn the best practices for shooting and how to approach different types of photos. Youâll have guided practice time to apply new skills, experiment, and ask questions as you work. Then, youâll critique the images you captured and identify ways to improve. This format creates space for both individual feedback and group learning. Youâll also have the chance to print a selection of your photos on-site! Youâll leave with tangible 4Ă6 prints that you can take home, share, or keep as a reminder of your progress. This workshop is designed to meet you where you are. Sharing her knowledge of photography, she sparked interest in hundreds of young kids who have learned how to use digital cameras, tell a story visually, create interesting portraits and intentionally explore their communities. Andrea curates an annual group exhibit of her studentsâ best work of the year to be on display at Florida Atlantic Universityâs Schmidt Gallery. Other exhibits of her studentsâ work include the Dolly Hand Cultural Arts Center in Belle Glade and the Lighthouse ArtCenter in Tequesta. She has led educational trips with National Geographic Student Expeditions and Putney Student Travel, focusing on photography while collaborating with experts in other fields like biology and science. Andrea is based in Boca Raton, Florida. Her work focuses on issues surrounding identity, migration, memory through the lens of visual storytelling. Youâll have the opportunity to photograph with the group, add new images to your portfolio, and receive personalized feedback of your portfolio. Weâll study the work of photographers whose projects have made lasting impact â discussing how such work is created, funded, and shared. Youâll leave with concrete ideas, inspiration, and a plan to carry your passion project forward. What to Expect:Youâll explore notable photography projects, participate in a guided shooting assignment, and discuss creative approaches. In this hands-on still life workshop, weâll explore the unique fruits in season across South Florida and transform them into beautiful works of art. Each season, we focus on a new variety of fruit to inspire our still lifes. For December, weâll work with locally sourced tropical produceâfrom passionfruit to canistel, black sapote, and Florida avocadoâwhile learning about their origins and where to find them. Whether you choose to collaborate with others or create independently, youâll have access to a stunning array of fruit and all the tools needed to bring your vision to life. Led by photographerÂ Andrea Sarcos, who has been creating fruit still lifes since 2022, this workshop covers composition, lighting, and design principles to help you craft an image (or drawing) youâre proud of. Cameras, backdrops, and lighting will be provided, though youâre welcome to bring your own camera or phone. Artists who prefer to draw or paint may bring their own materialsâwatercolors, pencils, or charcoal welcome. Weâll begin by creating a group still life together, then youâll design your own arrangement with personalized guidance from Andrea. Youâll walk away with new skills, beautiful images for your portfolioâor even a handmade gift for the holiday season. To end the morning, weâll enjoy the fruits of our laborâliterallyâwith a small tasting of our tropical creations. Instructor Information:Â Andrea SarcosAndrea is a freelance photographer, educator and interdisciplinary artist. Since 2018 she has taught photography classes to students K-12 as a Senior Artist in Residence at the Boys and Girls Club of Palm Beach County, the fifth largest Club organization in the United States. Sharing her knowledge of photography, she sparked interest in hundreds of young kids who have learned how to use digital cameras, tell a story visually, create interesting portraits and intentionally explore their communities. Andrea curates an annual group exhibit of her studentsâ best work of the year to be on display at Florida Atlantic Universityâs Schmidt Gallery. Other exhibits of her studentsâ work include the Dolly Hand Cultural Arts Center in Belle Glade and the Lighthouse ArtCenter in Tequesta. She has led educational trips with National Geographic Student Expeditions and Putney Student Travel, focusing on photography while collaborating with experts in other fields like biology and science. Andrea is based in Boca Raton, Florida. Her work focuses on issues surrounding identity, migration, memory through the lens of visual storytelling. Her photography journey began in high school seeing her images come to life in darkroom chemicals. She received dual bachelors degrees in Journalism and Visual Art Studies from the University of Florida (2015).
