One of the most significant steps we can take to reduce waste in our trash bins is to compost our food scraps. Removing food waste lowers the weight and amount of trash hauled to landfills and incinerators in and out of state.  The Farmington Green Efforts Committee, in partnership with the Farmington Library, invite you to learn the how’s and why’s of composting. For centuries, farmers have used compost to fertilize and improve the health of their fields. Transforming food waste to compost saves on buying soil enrichments that are trucked from afar in plastic bags and require purchasing.Come discover how food scraps can be turned into a free amendment to enrich your garden soil.Our presenter, Mr. Bob Lavorgna, is a UConn advanced master gardener and master composter. He will speak on what compost is and how the practice helps the environment and the garden. He’ll share tips and methods of composting to suit your needs including the pros and cons of backyard piles, bins, tumblers and vermiposting (letting worms do the work).  He will also fill us in on what some communities are doing for town-wide composting programs. Please join us to learn how we can make Farmington greener, one household at a time.
