The David M. Hunt Library in Falls Village will host a special commemorative exhibition of artworks by the late Priscilla Belcher (1930-2025), with a public reception on Saturday, April 25, from 5 to 7 PM. The exhibition celebrates Priscilla’s art and her deep ties to the Northwest Corner community. Priscilla’s art is distinguished by its focus on the natural world. Her disciplined self-taught technique paired with a gentle, contemplative spirit defined her artistic voice. Offering a rare opportunity to experience the breadth of her work, this exhibition brings together a curated selection of her watercolors and etchings including landscape and still life. Christian Allyn, organizer of the exhibition and a close friend of Priscilla’s, said, “Priscilla’s life and work define Canaan. Her work will accentuate our collective identity for decades to come.  As her example becomes more known, I foresee many little Priscilla’s, both in name and in character, running around Canaan in the years to come.” The April 25 reception is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.  Friends and admirers of the artist are warmly invited to gather, reminisce, and celebrate Priscilla Belcher’s creative life. On Saturday, May 9th at 2 pm, John Dickson will speak on his recently published book, “Herman Melville in the Berkshires”. Herman Melville first came to the Berkshires as a young boy but was so inspired by the surroundings that he returned to live here for thirteen years during one of the most productive writing periods of his life. He finished his masterpiece, Moby-Dick, in his first year, seated in his study with a view of Mount Greylock. Here, he wandered on foot and horseback to all corners of the county, tapping into the Berkshires in his art. The places he explored are sprinkled through the pages in his stories. John Dickson, a volunteer guide both at Arrowhead and in the Berkshire woods, reveals the connections between Melville’s writing and the beauty of the landscape that inspired him. After the talk, books will be available for purchase and signing.

On Thursday, May 14th at 2 pm join Dr. Gale Ridge, director of the Insect Information Office at the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station and one of the nation’s leading entomologists, at the David M. Hunt Library for an informative presentation about this fast-spreading invasive species. The spotted lanternfly has become impossible to miss in Connecticut, turning up on trees, patios, and cars across the state. Dr. Ridge will discuss how the lanternfly arrived in the United States, how it spreads and reproduces, and what each of us can do to reduce its impact. Learn how to identify the insect at every stage of its life cycle and get practical advice for protecting the plants and trees in your own backyard.

The David M. Hunt Library in Falls Village will host its annual Homegrown Plant Sale on the weekend of May 16 and 17 from 9AM to 3PM on Saturday and Sunday. Falls Village’s own growers, gardeners, and CSAs will provide a wide variety of plants, including a large selection of tomatoes, vegetables, annuals and perennials, and houseplants including potted geraniums and hanging baskets from HVRHS. Proceeds benefit the Hunt Library and HVRHS.  For more information, or to donate plants and pots, call the library at 860-824-7424 or visit huntlibrary.org. David M. Hunt Library in Falls Village, CT is pleased to present Catching Light, 75, a new exhibition of paintings by Janet Andre Block, a contemporary artist based in New York City and Connecticut.  Celebrating a milestone year in the artist’s life and practice, the exhibition features recent paintings including a series of tiny 2×2 inch artworks on magnets.   The public is invited to an opening reception on Saturday, May 23, from 5 to 7 PM and an Art Talk on Thursday, June 4 at 5:30 PM.  The exhibition will remain on display through June 19. In Catching Light, 75, Janet Andre Block continues her long engagement with the shifting presence of light—how it animates objects, alters mood, and reveals meaning in the everyday. Her paintings return to familiar subjects, often singular and deceptively simple in composition—a single building, a single flower or fruit—yet each canvas feels newly discovered, shaped by intuition, curiosity, and a disciplined commitment to the act of looking.
