The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary Tri-State Flotilla, Massachusetts will be instructing two upcoming boating safety classes that meet current state mandated educational requirements. The BOAT AMERICA COURSE is offered in a one-day format developed to provide the skills and confidence needed to explore the coast and inland waters by boat.  Basic knowledge and skills are needed to have safe and enjoyable boating experiences.  This course is perfect for families that have just purchased any type of boat or are planning to in the future, and for the boater keeping up with changes to boating regulations and laws.  Basic marlinespike seamanship (knots etc.) will also be included.  Successful completion of the course will certify any minor, from 12 to 16 years of age, to operate a powerboat, including a Personal Water Craft / Jet Ski (for 16 & 17-year-old operators), on all Massachusetts waters in conjunction with the Mass. Environmental Police.  Approved by National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) it will also cover the requirements to operate a vessel in most other states & many countries where boating safety education is mandatory including RI and CT. The Hanson-Milone Boater Safety Act, signed into Mass. Law, will now requires ALL Mass. motorboat operators to complete an approved Safe Boating Certificate course before April 1, 2026, for anyone born after 1/1/1998, and by April 1, 2028, for boaters born before 1/1/1998.  Enforcement of the new law will begin on September 1, 2026.  This course meets the new Mass. requirement.  Most boating insurance companies offer a discount on premiums for successful completion of this course.  Participants 16 years old and under must be accompanied, in person, by a registered parent/guardian.  SPACE IS LIMITED so register soon: Webster Fire Department – Saturday May 16 – 9 AM to 5 PM Webster Fire Department Classroom  55 Thompson Road, Webster, MAThe registration deadline is May 10.Contact our Public Education Officer Phil Kubat for registration or additional information: email [email protected] or call (508) 478-3778. The Family Fun Day kicks off at Noon with a Patriotic Costume Parade. The Parade begins at 12:15. Prizes will be given for: Most Historical, Most Patriotic, and Best Family/Group Theme. From 1:00 – 2:00 the Mighty Top Big Circus will perform. This is a small but mighty show with aerial silks, hula-hoop acrobatics, and aerial hoop acts. Following the Circus there will be a potato sack race, and a three-legged race, with prizes awarded. Throughout the afternoon families can enjoy yard games, a selfie station, face painting, a balloon artist, coloring and crafts, and an inflatable double slide. A DJ will be acting as emcee and providing music throughout the afternoon. Free hot dogs, chips, and water will be provided to the first 250 attendees. Food can also be purchased from attending Food Trucks.

Tri-State Flotilla 10-2 US Coast Guard Auxiliary VSC Station Bring any type of watercraft from kayaks, canoes, PWCs, sailboats, cabin cruisers, to ski & pontoon boats for a stem to stern check of equipment for compliance to federal and state safety regulations.  Vessels can be inspected on a trailer as well as afloat. The stations will be active from 9 AM to 4 PM. Weather reschedule will be the following Sunday, same time, and location. Trailered vessels, not having Webster access sticker and not launching, can be examined at the entrance gate to Memorial Beach.  This location can also accommodate boats arriving by water. Vessel Examiners are qualified and experienced to answer any boating related questions or concerns along with being trained to spot any potential problems.  They will award your vessel with a 2026 VSC decal if it meets Auxiliary standards on items such as: registration & hull numbering, life jackets, fire extinguishers, expiration dates on flares (if required), working navigation lights, overall vessel condition, etc.  A VSC is conducted only with your consent no reports are filed with any law enforcement agency.  There are no citations, legal obligations, or penalties on violations or potential problems found.  A VSC decal might result in a boat insurance discount and will indicate to law enforcement on the water that your vessel complies with safety regulations.  The Examiner will give the vessel owner options and information on correcting any issues.  Often a quick trip to the nearest boating supply vendor is all that is necessary to obtain missing safety items and easily pass a re-inspection, sometimes on the same day. Coast Guard Auxiliary Vessel Examiners will be around the local lakes at various, un-scheduled times during the boating season they are few and not readily available inland.  Cannot make it to the station…schedule a VSC online at the link:   www.VesselSafetyCheck.org Best to take advantage of these scheduled opportunities and start your boating season with a visit to our station, and a 2026 VSC decal.
