As part of its 2025 Fall Puppet Performance Series, the Ballard Institute and Museum of Puppetry at the University of Connecticut is pleased to welcome back UConn Puppet Arts alumna Sarah Nolen to perform Party Animals on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2025 at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. in the in the Ballard Institute Theater, located at 1 Royce Circle in Downtown Storrs. Party Animals follows five furry friends as they navigate the biggest social hurdle of their young lives — throwing their first party! Meet a bunny with boundless energy, a sloth with social anxiety, a hedgehog wrestling with wrapping, and a skunk who’s trying to keep everything cool and under control. Through song, dance, and original rock ‘n’ roll music by Boston local Phil Berman (of Puppet Playtime and The Holiday Sing-Along), these little stars discover that music can be an exuberant and healthy way to express their inner selves. As Puppet Showplace Theater’s Resident Artist, she performs regularly for youth and family audiences and teaches puppetry in camps, workshops, residencies, and evening adult classes. Sarah earned her BFA in film from Southern Methodist University, and an MFA from the UConn Puppet Arts Program. Ticket Prices: Adults: $12 Members/Seniors: $10 Students: $8 Kids: $6 (12 years and under). Tickets can be purchased in advance at the Ballard Institute and Museum of Puppetry, by calling 860-486-8580, or online at bimp.ticketleap.com. A surcharge will be added to any purchases made online. Winter Welcome

Celebrate the start of the new season with free, frosty fun in Downtown Storrs! The Mansfield Downtown Partnership will host its 13th Annual Winter Welcome on Saturday, December 6 from 4:00 PM to 6:30 PM on and around Betsy Paterson Square. Winter Welcome will feature hands-on, wintry fun with local businesses and community organizations – including The Last Green Valley! Activities will include a puzzle swap, animal tracking & habitat games, snow-themed fun, and even (toy) ax-throwing! Be on the look-out for some special visitors who will appear throughout the event, including a 12-foot tall polar bear and everyone’s favorite Husky! Listen for the sound of tubas – yes, tubas! – around 4:00 PM as a jolly friend makes his way through the downtown to Barnes & Noble UConn (1 Royce Circle). Arriving with an escort from the Tuba section of the UConn Marching Band, Santa and Mrs. Claus will visit with friends indoors at Barnes & Noble from 4:00 until 6:00 PM. There is no fee to visit and take some photos with Santa, Mrs. Claus, and their helper elves. During Winter Welcome, the Mansfield Resident State Troopers will collect new, unwrapped toys and gifts for kids and teens. Bring your donation to help stuff their cruiser! Donated items will be distributed to local families in need by Mansfield Human Services. Be sure to check out the entries in our Trim-A-Tree contest, which will be set-up on Betsy Paterson Square. Vote for your favorites at the Partnership’s booth and receive a gift (while supplies last)! Enjoy seasonal stories and songs with Mansfield Public Library and performances by Mansfield Academy of Dance, Miss Kelly’s Productions, and the UConn Tap Club on the stage of the Jeffery P. Ossen Family Foundation Pavilion on Betsy Paterson Square. And, visit participating Downtown Storrs businesses for sales, specials, and treats during Winter Welcome. Winter Welcome will take place rain, snow, or shine. Some activities may be adjusted due to weather. Changes will be announced on our website. Gateway Players Theatre in Southbridge, MA is hosting auditions for “Remedial”. Written by local playwright Jordan Miller. Auditions will be held on December 14 and 15 at 6:30pm, with a weather date of December 17 at 6:30pm if needed, in Fellowship Hall at Elm Street Congregational Church, 61 Elm Street, Southbridge. Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script. Performance dates are February 27 & 28 and March 6, 7 & 8. Rehearsals will be held on Monday and Wednesday nights. Synopsis: Robin is a disillusioned author who reluctantly takes a job teaching remedial English to a group of adult students. Bitter from past trauma and career setbacks, Robin initially struggles to connect with these diverse students, each of whom carries their own burdens. As the story unfolds, the classroom becomes a space for unexpected growth, where Robin and the students challenge each other’s assumptions and learn to confront their insecurities. Through humor, conflict, and shared vulnerability, “Remedial” explores themes of resilience, empathy, and the transformative power of understanding and human connection. Character Information (Gender is flexible, except where mentioned) ROBIN: An English professor and author. Intelligent and generally good-hearted, but jaded and aloof. About 55 DR. HAMILTON: Robin’s therapist. Friendly and helpful, but also firm when needed. Any age ANGEL: A hard-working, streetwise parent trying to go back to college. Intelligent, but not very well educated. Upbeat and witty. Early 30’s. Should be played by someone assigned female at birth. DEVIN: A generally clueless dunce. Devin provides much of the comic relief. Early 20’s JAMIE: A young adult who was unable to have a childhood.A hard worker and a no-nonsense person. Early to mid 20’s. Should be played by someone assigned male at birth MORGAN: A decidedly average adult trying to make changes for their two children. Early 40’s CAMERON: A person reluctantly going back to school. They are unmotivated and unserious. Mid 20’s to mid 30’s. BLAKE: A person with autism. Blake is very helpful and intelligent, but lacks some traditional social skills. 20’s or 30’s.
