Foul Dungeons, Prison Ships, & Forced MarchesIn partnership with the Bridgewater Historical Society Registration is required. RSVP BELOW You are invited to join us for âFoul Dungeons, Floating Prisons, and Forced Marches,â a fascinating presentation by Susan Bigelow, History & Genealogy Librarian at the Connecticut State Library, exploring the little-known stories of Revolutionary War prisoners in Connecticut. In November 1778, a strange procession wound its way through the sparsely populated hills and valleys of northern Connecticut: thousands of British and German prisoners of war captured at Saratoga marched under guard from their former quarters in Cambridge to the near wilderness of Charlottesville, Virginia. The so-called âConvention Armyâ was an extreme example of a thorny problem faced by both sides during the American Revolution: what to do with the growing number of prisoners of war. Connecticutâs leaders responded in a variety of waysâsome humane, others surprisingly harsh. Along the way, youâll discover stories of German officers hosting dance parties in the villages they passed through, captives confined deep within a dark copper mine, and British sailors who staged a daring escape from a prison ship in New London Harbor. Susan Bigelow is a librarian and recovering political writer with a deep love of local history. She is a member of the History & Genealogy staff at the Connecticut State Library and serves on the Board of Directors of the Enfield Historical Society.

Christy Bonaiuto with Seeing Things DifferentlyOctober 1 â 30, 2026, during library hours Artist reception on Friday, October 2, from 6:00 â 8:00 pm. All welcome This October, Burnham Library will welcome local artist Christy Bonaiuto for âSeeing Things Differently,â an exhibition of abstract paintings and nature photography that invites viewers to look closer, imagine freely, and discover their own interpretations. âWhat do you see?â is the exhibitionâs central question. Bonaiuto embraces the idea that there is no single way to experience a work of art. Each viewer brings their own perspective, and what one person sees may be entirely different from what another imagines. Bonaiuto describes her artistic process: âMy artwork reflects my distinct vision and creative approach. Working with acrylics, I use a mix of techniques and tools, allowing each piece to develop organically. Shapes and imagery emerge as I work, giving my paintings movement and spontaneity. My titles add context and invite viewers to form their own interpretations.â In addition to painting, Bonaiuto is a passionate nature photographer. Through perspective, composition, color, and detail, she brings a fresh viewpoint to the natural world, encouraging viewers to pause and notice the beauty in familiar things. Visitors may also have the opportunity to participate in an interactive component of the exhibition by sharing what they see in selected works and adding their own interpretations to the experience. An active member of the local arts community, Bonaiuto serves on the boards of Gallery 25 in New Milford, Great Hollow Photography Club, and the Sherman Artists Association. She also chairs the Sherman Commission for the Arts. A dedicated teacher, she is preparing to open her home studio in Sherman, where she will offer painting and resin workshops for artists of all experience levels.
