RSVP requested at: https://WeHoPoetrySpa2024.eventbrite.com Come celebrate National Poetry Month and lounge with a poet at our 2nd annual Poetry Spa Day at the respite deck of the West Hollywood Aquatic and Recreation Center. From 6 - 7:30 p.m., explore poetry at “spa stations” such as Feng Shui Poetry, Poemaroma (essential oils), Lotus Poetry (origami), and other poetic experiences. At 7:30 p.m., we gather at the steps at sunset to hear all the poets share their words. Poetry Spa is a concept created by Brian Sonia-Wallace during his term as 2020-23 West Hollywood City Poet Laureate. This year’s event is curated by current West Hollywood City Poet Laureate Jen Cheng, and the spa stations and poets include: • Terry Wolverton, author of eleven books and the new book Season of Eclipse (Bella Books, 2024) hosts our spa station Poemaroma. • A. K. Toney is a Griot, writer, musician, and educator who hosts our spa station Listening Libations where attendees get to mix poetry with soothing sounds. • Brian Sonia-Wallace, author of Poetry of Strangers (Harper Collins, 2020) hosts our spa station Poetry Bath. • Members of Pride Poets, Timothy Nang hosts spa station Lotus Poetry and Jose Rios hosts spa station Poetry Bingo. • Jen Cheng, author of Braided Spaces (Wokelicious, 2023), hosts our spa station Feng Shui Poetry which guides attendees through the Five Elements. The City of West Hollywood will host its 2024 Annual Tree Planting event on Saturday, April 20, 2024, at 9:00 a.m. Four (4) trees will be planted in residential parkway locations at 1146 &, 1148 Formosa Avenue. The tree species selected for this year’s celebration is the paperbark (Melaleuca quinquenervia). Widely planted throughout Southern California, this tree species is native to Australia. The paperbark is a rounded, evergreen tree with a maximum height of 40’ feet. It has a low water use rating and features exfoliating bark and oblong leaves with seasonal flower displays in the summer and fall that will attract pollinators and birds. Sun exposure ranges from partial shade to full sun. Supervision, instruction, and tools and gloves will be provided. The event will start with a short “how-to” planting session, followed by a discussion on the benefits trees provide to our urban environment. Community members are encouraged to join! ,

The City of West Hollywood is hosting a free in-person symposium exploring water and its relationship with growth and construction, geological and hydrological realities, and the preservation of local ecosystems and resilience. All life begins and ends with water. A precious resource, water is vital for a healthy and vibrant planet. Clean fresh water is not only essential for drinking and sanitation and providing for our crops, livestock, and industry, but it also it is basis for creating and sustaining the ecosystems on which all humanity depends on. This Symposium will explore the fundamental role that water plays in supporting urbanized settings and looks at some of the key challenges that lie ahead with respect to future sustainability, climate change, ecological, and resilience goals are pursued. Coffee, tea, and pastries will be provided, alongside lunch following the conclusion of the Symposium.

The City of West Hollywood has a long history of commemorating victims of the Holocaust on the Internationally recognized Day – Yom HaShoah, which is observed as the day of commemoration for the approximately six million Jews and five million others who perished in the Holocaust because of the actions carried out by Nazi Germany and its accessories, and for the Jewish resistance in that period. , Many Holocaust survivors reside in the City of West Hollywood, some shared a legacy of survival, resilience, and responsibility by giving interviews for the Shoah Foundation Archive, the mission of which is to develop empathy, understanding, and respect through testimony. Yom HaShoah Event is an opportunity to recognize and remember victims of the Holocaust and focus on preventing genocides and other human atrocities from happening again. The goal of our event is to make sure that the young generation becomes aware of the atrocities that took place during that time in Europe. By keeping the memory alive we will have a better chance of dark history not repeating itself ever again.
