Let’s turn off the lights and speak poems to each other. This is an intimate conversation, not a performance. Please bring inside you a poem you know by heart. If you think you don't know any poems by heart, come anyway! Hosted by Cupertino Poet Laureate Keiko O'Leary. I carry poems inside me like dear friends. I’d like to introduce you to some of them, and to meet yours. Poetry in the Dark is not a reading or a performance; it is an intimate conversation among friends. Please join other poetry lovers in allowing our poem-friends to speak to each other, and to us. How it works: 1. We sit in chairs in a circle—there is no audience. 2. We turn off the lights so that no one feels they’re on the spot. 3. Someone recites a poem. 4. That poem inspires someone else to recite a different poem. 5. It’s like the poems are talking to each other! This is a magical experience. If you’re even a bit curious, please join us. Keiko O’Leary has been writing poems since the sixth grade and has seen the value of poetry to enhance life for over 30 years. She has published many poems and is the author of Your Writing Matters: 34 Quick Essays to Get Unstuck and Stay Inspired. With a population of nearly 40 million people, the state of California is rich in diversity and talent. The Santa Clara County Library District brings together acclaimed writers from different backgrounds whose compelling works engage audiences and spark thoughtful conversations. Join us on Saturday, December 6 at 10 a.m. at the Cupertino Community Hall as we hear from three California authors about their groundbreaking works. Bestselling author Steven Rowley writes LGBTQ+ fiction that explores modern relationships and life, weaving together emotional depth that is poignant but at times humorous. His most recent book, The Dogs of Venice, is out in October. Poet and performer Devorah Major explores themes of being, family, community and the Black Experience. A former San Francisco Poet Laureate, Major shares her knowledge and teaches poetry craft, short story writing and composition. Major’s latest work is word time. Tech executive, attorney and activist Bärí A. Williams has worked on initiatives geared towards diversity in the workplace. Her recent book Seen Yet Unseen: A Black Woman Crashes the Tech Fraternity is her story about a Black woman from Oakland working in Silicon Valley for companies like Facebook (now Meta). Open to all adults who love to read and discuss non-fictional literature. In December, the Cupertino Library Adult Nonfiction Book Group will talk about The fear of too much justice: race, poverty, and the persistence of inequality in the criminal courts.by Stephen B. Bright and James Kwak (2023) Authors Stephen B. Bright and James Kwak’s book delves into the problem of how our actual criminal justice system generally fails to live up to the values of “liberty and justice for all.” In fact America’s criminal justice system is weighted against defendants of color and anyone too poor to hire competent lawyers. Between receiving incompetent legal defense through assigned public defenders, overly powerful prosecutors and threats of excessive jail time to force defendants into a plea bargain, and judges seeking re-election through their willingness to imposed the death penalty and crippling court fees that keep people who cannot pay them in jail, finding justice is a huge problem. Bright and Kwak propose that the courts could improve the odds of equal justice being served  by   the elimination of unjust fees and for profit incarceration, and significantly curbing the power of prosecutors. The Adult Nonfiction Book Discussion Group meets on the second Sunday of each month at 11am in Room 201B.
