In your 1-hour, one-on-one session, library staff will work with you to diagnose and find a solution to the problem. Gem Painting is taking the crafting world by storm. It’s the perfect mixture of paint-by-numbers and mosaic art, without the paint! Instead, tiny gems make a beautiful pattern and sparkle in the light. Gem Painting is a recurring series that invites creative makers to gather together in the same place on a regular basis. If you are interested in participating, be sure to register for the series, attend the first date, and then drop in on the dates that work for your schedule so you can work on your masterpiece. Participants are not required to attend every session, but we will only be accepting new participants on a monthly basis. As this project aims to gather creative makers in the community, each participant's gem painting materials will be labeled and held at the library until the month is complete. Check the schedule below for when we will provide canvases to new participants and when we will only allow per-existing participants to drop in. December 2, 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM -- Canvases available for new participants December 7, 12:30 PM - 2:30 PM -- Drop in for per-existing participants. Join us for a hands-on 90-minute medallion workshop teaching traditional weaving with pine needles with Indigenous maker, Ellissa Thompson. Ellissa Thompson (Chickasaw Nation of Oklahoma) grew up in the Bay Area, where she was always drawn to the beadwork worn by powwow dancers and the aunties around her — intricate pieces that carried beauty, tradition, and story. When the COVID-19 pandemic moved her work and school life online, Ellissa chose to deepen her relationship with beadwork — turning a budding passion into both a livelihood and a way to stay connected to community. Along the way, she’s found deep support and learning in the beading circle at Intertribal Friendship House Oakland, in the wider Bay Area Native community, and with her relatives in Chickasaw Country.
