Class Dates: 3/27, 4/16, 5/15, 6/26, 7/10, 8/21 List of Classes in this SeriesThe Evolution of Plants Friday, March 27, 10 am – 12 pm The evolution of plants is one of the most important stories of life on Earth. From single-celled algae in the sea to towering redwoods and the spectacular diversity of flowering plants, they have made all other life possible. This class traces the remarkable story of the evolution of plants. Mosses, Hornworts, and Liverworts Thursday, April 16, 10 am – 12 pm Mosses, hornworts, and liverworts are small plants that can be easily overlooked. However, they represent a crucial stage in the evolution of land plants. They also differ from other land plants in some key respects. This class delves into these important plants. Ferns and Their Allies Friday, May 15, 10 am – 12 pm Ferns and their relatives were once the dominant land plants on Earth and they still form important components of ecosystems around the world. In this class we explore the diversity and natural history of ferns, horsetails, and other plants known collectively as pteridophytes. Gymnosperms Friday, June 26, 10 am – 12 pm Gymnosperms include such familiar plants as pines, firs, spruces, gingkoes, and many others. They make up a large part of northern and mountain forests but also occur in more arid areas. This class looks at the diversity and natural history of these plants. Flowering Plants – Part 1 Friday, July 10, 10 am – 12 pm Flowering plants are the crown of plant evolution and are the dominant plants on Earth. They are so diverse that they require 2 classes to just begin the conversation about them! This class introduces flowering plants, also called angiosperms, discussing features that unite them and begin our survey of flowering plant families known as monocots. Flowering Plants – Part 2 Friday, August 21, 10 am – 12 pm We conclude our survey of plants by continuing our exploration of flowering plants. We dive into some of the remaining families of flowering plants that are collectively called dicots. Like the plants discussed in Flowering Plants Part 1, many of these plants will be familiar, while others you may never have heard of before. Instructor Jeff BabsonJeff Babson is an all-around naturalist, with particular interest in birds, butterflies, moths, beetles and dragonflies. Owner of Sky Island Tours, an environmental education and eco-tour company, Jeff has led birding tours for the Tucson Botanical Gardens, Pima County Department of Natural Resources, Parks and Recreation, Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, and several birding festivals in southern Arizona (Wings over Willcox, Southwest Wings, Tucson Birding and Nature Festival). Desert Insect Illustration: a 4-part Series

We will draw and paint Sonoran Desert insects, from photos, videos, and from life (if you are lucky!) Recommended materials: multi-media paper or artist-grade watercolor papergraphite pencil, 2B and/or 6Beraserwatercolor set, primary colors & burnt umber watercolor brushes, #8 or #10 round brush to startwater cuppaper towel or ragOptional materials: magnifying glassinsect specimensinsect photos (instructor will provide a basic class set)instructor Trenton JungTrenton is a natural science illustrator based in Seattle, WA, formerly in Tucson, AZ. Born and raised outside of Los Angeles, CA, the sun and water play an influential role in his art practice. Trenton’s work reflects his deep interest in organic forms, and focuses on the unseen and unnoticed aspects of nature. He use a variety of mediums to represent my observations including watercolor, graphite, colored pencil, and gouache. His work has been featured at the American Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian magazine, at the Woodard Lab (University of Riverside, CA), in Anthropocene, and Nature (science journals). Winter Aromatics & Scented Herbal SachetsRegister Here$55 Non-Member / $44 Member Class Capacity 15 This Saguaro on Leather Bracelet uses a non-traditional stringing method to give the bracelet a whole personality to match the focal bead. Five strands of black leather and gold, large-hole sliding beads make a very eye-catching effect. All materials and tools will be provided by the artist, and no experience is necessary. Each bracelet will be sized to fit the participant, and each participant will leave with a finished piece. Instructor Dee TaubeI have always loved art, so while growing up I took all the art classes that were offered in school. I was drawn to art beyond being content to just appreciate it, but during my working career making time for art seemed a luxury to be put on hold for the future. Somehow I found jewelry making and fell in love with it. It enabled me to work with color, design, and texture, it was a great stress-reliever, an outlet for my creativity, and it nurtured my soul. When I became a member of an artists’ co-op in Colorado Springs, I was constantly admiring the work created by the glass artists there, and one day one of them offered to teach me how to fuse glass. I was hooked. Creating fused glass art has taught me to appreciate all art even more than I did before. It is always a learning experience. But when everything goes right, the end result brings me joy and nurtures my soul, as I always hope it will for those who see my art. Learning, enjoying and creating art is an ongoing journey. How might poetry help us articulate what it means to be an earthworker, someone who cares for the earth and all that it gives? Join Tucson Poet Laureate (and self-described “plant nerd”) Logan Phillips for a playful exploration of writing, sensory awareness, and collaboration with the more-than-human world. No experience necessary! Together we will read poems from Aimee Nezhukumatathil and Camille Dungy, learn techniques to unlock the healing power of writing, and build creative community. We’ll come away with our own poetic sketches (first drafts) and a new understanding of why you can take the poet out of the garden – but never the garden out of the poet! instructor Logan PhillipsLogan Phillips is a writer, performer, and cultural worker, appointed Poet Laureate of Tucson, Arizona in 2026.
