The 3rd Annual Cuesta College Ethnic Studies Teach-In on Friday 4/26 will feature the theme “Ethnic Studies is for Everybody!” The program includes keynote speaker Dr. Lucha Arévalo, student artwork, original Ethnic Studies Storybooks, workshops, and a plenary panel of experts. Over lunch, community resources will be available and a drum circle will be led by R.A.C.E. Matters SLO resident artist Tracy Morgan. Woods Humane Society is asking the community to donate pet food for families facing financial hardship during its upcoming Pet Pantry Donation Drive held at all SLO County Lemos Feed & Pet Supply locations on April 27th from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. As an incentive to participate, Lemos will offer a 15 percent discount on any goods purchased for donation during the event, and Sylvester’s Burgers will provide certificates for a free Ziggy’s Taco or Sylvester’s Burger to anyone who donates a bag of pet food during the event. “In recent months, we have fielded an increasing number of calls from distressed pet parents who are dedicated to their beloved pets but need immediate help to provide these dogs and cats with their most basic needs,” explains Community Engagement Manager Robin Coleman. “Our Pet Pantry program aims to provide support to these families so that more pets can receive the nourishment they need and remain in their loving homes. We hope the community will join us in spreading the word about this service and stocking up on our supplies during this hard time.” The Woods Humane Society Pet Pantry began in 2020 in response to the large number of pet parents who were facing unprecedented hardships due to COVID-19. With the support of generous community members and businesses like Lemos Feed & Pet Supply and Hills Pet Nutrition, Woods was able to deliver thousands of pounds of pet food and supplies to the community. Since then, the organization has continued to make it a priority to ensure that pets facing food scarcity have access to nutritious food. In 2023, it shared 12,727 pounds of pet food, thanks to the generous donations of compassionate community members. In addition to sharing food with individual pet owners, the nonprofit animal shelter works with community distribution partners such as Lumina Alliance, Salvation Army, 40 Prado Homeless Services Center, Paso Cares, and local church food pantries to improve pet owners’ access to Pet Pantry supplies throughout the county. This month, Woods expanded their reach by forming a new partnership with ECHO (El Camino Homeless Organization), serving North County families. This exhibition returns to and proceeds from ancient knowledge and harmony with nature, world-building an alternate narrative toward a freer existence. San Luis Obispo Vocal Arts Ensemble is celebrating 48 amazing years of making beautiful choral music for audiences in San Luis Obispo County and around the world! In honor of our beloved Gary Lamprecht, founder and musical director of Vocal Arts Ensemble, the concert series will conducted by Melody Svennungsen featuring a rousing selection of Gary’s favorite songs accompanied by Judy Robertson. Our spring concerts will kick off the season in style bringing hope and joy to audiences of all ages. The shows are a wonderful treat for the whole family. Thursday, May 2nd at Trilogy Monarch Dunes in Nipomo at 7:00 pm. and Saturday, May 4th at 3:00 pm at the Cuesta Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $30 and $10 for children 12 and under. Parking is free at the Cuesta and Trilogy shows. A World-Class Ensemble For over 48 years, the Vocal Arts Ensemble has been regarded as a community treasure of California’s central coast, regularly entertaining audiences with a variety of concerts in and around San Luis Obispo County. The singers memorize all the words to each song and practice weekly. The group has also become highly regarded beyond our shores, winning friends, acclaim, and awards in international choral festivals. Tours have included the British Isles, Russia, Poland, Italy, Austria, Slovenia, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Argentina, Uruguay, Sweden, Italy, France, Norway, Spain and Canada. Over the years, numerous singers with Vocal Arts have also been successful professional performers. Others are dedicated amateurs who may be seen performing a variety of noteworthy “day jobs” in the community. The group’s founder, Gary Lamprecht, was a well-known and inspiring teacher, leader, and visionary in the world of choral music, and who was awarded the Lifetime Achievement award from the American Choral Director’s Association. From the late Gary Lamprecht:The English composer, John Rutter is one of the most performed composers of choral musician the world. In this “Gary’s Favorites” concert we are doing two Rutter pieces. The “Cloths of Heaven” is a beautifully arranged composition by the great Irish poet, William Butler Yeats. “Esto Les Digo” is a prayer in Spanish. Next the women of Vocal Arts will dance while performing Huddie Lebetter’s “Bring Me Little Water, Silvy”. Morten Lauridsen is also a popular composer. We will be doing two of his compositions .All in all, this is a Vocal Art variety concert with at least a few songs you will like. I love them! We are presenting two concerts, each in a beautiful setting. A group of mismatched teachers and actors have been charged by the school district to devise an ethnically sensitive play to somehow celebrate both Thanksgiving and Native American Heritage Month. In order to be as respectful and accurate as possible, the three white actors defer to the only Native American in the room for guidance and find their expectations of her insights are wildly misguided. In this wickedly funny satire, this foursome must find their way through a hilarious thicket of assumptions, historical perspectives and school district policies as the absurd pageant must go on!

San Luis Obispo Vocal Arts Ensemble is celebrating 48 amazing years of making beautiful choral music for audiences in San Luis Obispo County and around the world! In honor of our beloved Gary Lamprecht, founder and musical director of Vocal Arts Ensemble, the concert series will conducted by Melody Svennungsen featuring a rousing selection of Garyâs favorite songs accompanied by Judy Robertson. Our spring concerts will kick off the season in style bringing hope and joy to audiences of all ages. The shows are a wonderful treat for the whole family. Thursday, May 2nd at Trilogy Monarch Dunes in Nipomo at 7:00 pm. and Saturday, May 4th at 3:00 pm at the Cuesta Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $30 and $10 for children 12 and under. Parking is free at the Cuesta and Trilogy shows. A World-Class Ensemble For over 48 years, the Vocal Arts Ensemble has been regarded as a community treasure of Californiaâs central coast, regularly entertaining audiences with a variety of concerts in and around San Luis Obispo County. The singers memorize all the words to each song and practice weekly. The group has also become highly regarded beyond our shores, winning friends, acclaim, and awards in international choral festivals. Tours have included the British Isles, Russia, Poland, Italy, Austria, Slovenia, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Argentina, Uruguay, Sweden, Italy, France, Norway, Spain and Canada. Over the years, numerous singers with Vocal Arts have also been successful professional performers. Others are dedicated amateurs who may be seen performing a variety of noteworthy âday jobsâ in the community. The groupâs founder, Gary Lamprecht, was a well-known and inspiring teacher, leader, and visionary in the world of choral music, and who was awarded the Lifetime Achievement award from the American Choral Directorâs Association. From the late Gary Lamprecht:The English composer, John Rutter is one of the most performed composers of choral musician the world. In this âGaryâs Favoritesâ concert we are doing two Rutter pieces. The âCloths of Heavenâ is a beautifully arranged composition by the great Irish poet, William Butler Yeats. âEsto Les Digoâ is a prayer in Spanish. Next the women of Vocal Arts will dance while performing Huddie Lebetterâs âBring Me Little Water, Silvyâ. Morten Lauridsen is also a popular composer. We will be doing two of his compositions .All in all, this is a Vocal Art variety concert with at least a few songs you will like. I love them! We are presenting two concerts, each in a beautiful setting.
