In his talk, From Nogales Boy to Poet Laureate: One Latino's Journey, Mr. Rios will discuss his cultural background and read from his award-winning work. About the Presenter: Alberto Ríos, Arizona’s inaugural poet laureate and a recent chancellor of the Academy of American Poets, is the author of twelve collections of poetry, most recently, Not Go Away Is My Name, preceded by A Small Story about the Sky, The Dangerous Shirt, and The Theater of Night, which received the PEN/Beyond Margins Award. Published in the New Yorker, Paris Review, Ploughshares, and other journals, he has also written three short story collections and a memoir, Capirotada, about growing up on the Mexican border, with a novel forthcoming, A Good Map of All Things. Ríos is also the host of the PBS programs Art in the 48 and Books & Co., for which he won a 2020 Rocky Mountain Emmy Award. University Professor of Letters, Regents’ Professor, Virginia G. Piper Chair in Creative  Writing, and the Katharine C. Turner Chair in English, Ríos has taught at Arizona State University since 1982. In 2017, he was named director of the Virginia G. Piper Center for Creative Writing.

Event Title: Scottish Highlanders and Native Americans: Historical Documents, Photographs, and Modern Bloodlines Event Locator: 2023-AJQBDC Dr. Sharenda Roam will share historical records demonstrating the interactions between the Scottish and Native Americans through photographs and historical documentation, including records of her own Scottish and Cherokee ancestry. This presentation was also given at the Outlander Conference in Glasgow in July 2023. In Outlander Season 4 Episode 4 “Common Ground” the Frasers interact with Cherokee native people. Using data from the U.S. Census, Dawes Rolls, and DNA records this paper shares records of my own Scottish bloodline and Cherokee tribal membership as a modern example of the offspring of these types of historical interactions. Rare photographs, stories, birth certificates, and other U.S. government documentation never gathered in one paper nor presented together in any academic forum, will be included. One unique aspect shared will be the 1869 historical agreement in which 722 Loyal Shawnee were granted Cherokee citizenship in Indian Territory. My ancestral grandmother was one of these tribal members. Her descendent, my great-grandmother, was known as a spiritual healer, and given land in Oklahoma Indian Territory by the U.S. Government. The relationship between the Cherokee and Scottish is a close and historically documented one. Historian and author Colin Calloway explains: Scots-Indian, John Ross was the principal chief of the Cherokees during the era of Indian Removal around 1830 … With prominent ancestors like Ross, perhaps the Highland influence is most keenly felt today among Native Americans in the Cherokee clan. This paper will add to the historical records demonstrating the interactions between the Scottish and Native Americans through photographs and historical documentation.
