Gila County Public Works Roads Division will be performing roads improvement projects in May in Southern Gila County. This road improvements project will consist of a chipseal on top of the existing pavement, followed by a surface seal on top of the chipseal.   A chipseal consists of petroleum-based binder that seals the existing pavement and a 3/8” aggregate, “chip” that will provide a new textured surface to drive on. To ensure the success of this project, Gila County is requesting that all residents who live in the following areas scheduled for this year’s chipseal to not have anything parked within any right-of-way.   This includes, but is not limited to, vehicles, boats and trailers from 6 am to 5 pm for the duration of this project.   This is to ensure that we can cover 100% of the paved area and avoid damaging anything parked to close to the construction site. There will not be any road closures, but drivers should expect one-way traffic and/or temporary rerouting, small delays, flaggers and traffic control. Dollar Dump Day at Gila County Landfills -- Gila County's once-a-month $1 discount \"Dollar Day\"  on the second Saturday each month is for residents to dispose of waste at a significantly reduced rate of $1-per-load. This discount is limited to residents, and excludes commercial haulers.  Please bring coins or a dollar bill for loads that will cost just a buck; debit or credit cards are accepted for additional fees. Bringing $1 cash to pay for the discount is a helpful courtesy, quicker and more efficient than credit cards, and bringing that dollar avoids credit card fees and time spent to process a one dollar credit card transaction. Landfill Dollar Day Discount -- Now Limited to 1,000 Pounds The once-a-month ‘dollar day’ discount was suspended at Russell Gulch Landfill through most of 2023 while a major excavation project was ongoing. With that work completed, dollar day returned Dec. 9, 2023.   At the landfills in Payson and Globe on the second Saturday each month, residents can pay just $1 to dispose of one load up to 1,000 pounds. Truck or trailer loads weighing over 1,000 pounds will be charged $1 for the first 1,000 pounds and the existing fee rate for everything else over the 1,000 pounds.   Landfill staff remind landfill users to tarp, cover and secure loads of trash - state and local laws require all loads must be covered or secured - that applies to residential haulers as well as commercial, and applies on ‘dollar day,’ too. The dollar day discount was created for residential users -- and proof of Gila County residency is required. Commercial haulers pay regular landfill fees. Control Road NF-64 Project May 20-July 29   State Route 260 east of Roberts Mesa Road, Payson The Control Road NF-64 project, State Route 260 east of Roberts Mesa Road, in Payson, will begin Monday, May 20. The four-mile project will consist of adding rumble strips on the first two miles (mile marker 23- 21) and then the next two miles (from mile marker 21- 19). The roadway will be graded for applying a double chip-seal surface and rumble strips will be installed on this section, as well. The four-mile section will also include application of pavement marking, signage and other related work. The work will take place Monday through Thursday from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m., with some work possible on Fridays. There will be no work on Thursday and Friday, July 4-5 and on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27. Funded by Gila County and the Highway Safety Improvement Program/Federal Highway Administration grant, the construction project should be completed by Monday, July 29. The total project cost is about $682,378. Drivers can expect lane closures with pilot car operations with 15-to-20-minute delays. The contractor will maintain access to all driveways during their hours of operation and all non-working hours. Gila County Public Works Roads Division will be performing a roads improvement project in May in southern Gila County. This road improvements project will consist of a chipseal on top of the existing pavement, followed by a surface seal on top of the chipseal.   A chipseal consists of petroleum-based binder that seals the existing pavement and a 3/8” aggregate, “chip” that will provide a new textured surface to drive on. To ensure the success of this project, Gila County is requesting that all residents who live in the following areas scheduled for this year’s chipseal to not have anything parked within any right-of-way.  This includes, but is not limited to, vehicles, boats and trailers from 6 am to 5 pm for the duration of this project.  This is to ensure that we can cover 100% of the paved area and avoid damaging anything parked to close to the construction site. There will not be any road closures, but drivers should expect one-way traffic and/or temporary rerouting, small delays, flaggers and traffic control.   Decoding Teen Behavior Classes May 2   University of Arizona Cooperative Extension’s Gila County staff will offer a Thursday series of weekly workshops in decoding teen behavior starting May 2 and continuing weekly at 5:30 p.m. for six Thursdays. Each session builds on the idea that teens behave better when they feel a sense of belonging. Parents can learn skills to help teens develop the drive parents would want them to have as adults. Parents will learn the root causes of common behaviors and how to respond to that behavior in a productive way. Today the society is very active with dozens of members from all over Central Arizona, from the west cost to the Midwest, and as far away as Canada. Design/Laser Class For Adults is Free  Saturday May 25     Signup soon for this one, if you’re an adult enthused to learn a few basics of graphic design – and to leave the class carrying your unique design laser-etched onto a coaster that will be yours to keep! The May 25 Saturday class is free, but limited to 10 adult enrollees. Instructor David Flores will demonstrate graphic design using Inkscape, followed by a chance for each learner to see their own finished design precisely etched by an OMTech 80 watt laser. Saturday’s free class is offered by University of Arizona Cooperative Extension Gila County; where Instructor David Flores “is our mobile maker guru” according to staff, and has been coaching High Desert Middle Schoolers on how to use 3-D printers and the OMTech laser. Learn how to cut and engrave with both the 80 Watt laser. We will get hands on and everyone will make themselves a laser engraved tumbler. This is a three-hour workshop, please plan to be there for all of it. Laser cutters are great for cutting wood, acrylic, paper, fabric, and some other materials -- it cannot cut metal. During class we will cover why some materials are not safe because of toxic fumes. Safety related to the various systems as well as fires that can occur inside the laser cutter. No experience necessary. Ages 18 and up. Those under 18 can be trained on the laser, but would still require a trained 4-H leader to supervise the use.”

Dollar Dump Day at Gila County Landfills -- Gila County's once-a-month $1 discount \"Dollar Day\"  on the second Saturday each month is for residents to dispose of waste at a significantly reduced rate of $1-per-load. This discount is limited to residents, and excludes commercial haulers.  Please bring coins or a dollar bill for loads that will cost just a buck; debit or credit cards are accepted for additional fees. Bringing $1 cash to pay for the discount is a helpful courtesy, quicker and more efficient than credit cards, and bringing that dollar avoids credit card fees and time spent to process a one dollar credit card transaction. Landfill Dollar Day Discount -- Now Limited to 1,000 Pounds The once-a-month ‘dollar day’ discount was suspended at Russell Gulch Landfill through most of 2023 while a major excavation project was ongoing. With that work completed, dollar day returned Dec. 9, 2023.   At the landfills in Payson and Globe on the second Saturday each month, residents can pay just $1 to dispose of one load up to 1,000 pounds. Truck or trailer loads weighing over 1,000 pounds will be charged $1 for the first 1,000 pounds and the existing fee rate for everything else over the 1,000 pounds.   Landfill staff remind landfill users to tarp, cover and secure loads of trash - state and local laws require all loads must be covered or secured - that applies to residential haulers as well as commercial, and applies on ‘dollar day,’ too. The dollar day discount was created for residential users -- and proof of Gila County residency is required. Commercial haulers pay regular landfill fees.
