CLA Dean Candidate Public Presentation: Dr. MaryTheresa Seig

The University of Alaska Fairbanks has announced three finalists for the position of dean of the College of Liberal Arts. Each candidate will visit campus to participate in a series of public events, including open presentations, faculty and staff meet and greets, and student engagement sessions. Members of the university community and the public are invited to attend the candidates’ public presentations, which will be held both in person and via livestream. Due to limited seating, those wishing to attend in person are encouraged to RSVP in advance. Livestream access, RSVP links, and opportunities to submit questions and feedback are available on the official dean search website: https://www.uaf.edu/provost/provost-units/cladean.php Finalists and Campus Visit Schedule Dr. MaryTheresa Seig Public Presentation: Monday, March 30, 2026, at 8:30 a.m. Dr. Seig is an experienced academic leader currently serving as a dean with responsibility for academic strategy, faculty development, student success initiatives, and cross-institutional partnerships. Her work emphasizes collaborative governance, workforce-aligned program design, and partnerships with community, state, and Tribal organizations. Dr. Alvin Malesky Public Presentation: Tuesday, March 31, 2026, at 8:30 a.m. Dr. Malesky is a professor at Western Carolina University and former head of the Department of Psychology. His research focuses on artificial intelligence and academic integrity in higher education. He is an award-winning educator and licensed psychologist with extensive leadership training and experience. Dr. Carrie Baker Public Presentation: Tuesday, April 7, 2026, at 8:30 a.m. Dr. Baker currently serves as interim dean of the College of Liberal Arts. A longtime faculty member in Theatre & Film, she previously served as associate dean and department chair. She brings extensive experience in academic leadership, teaching, and the performing arts. **All presentations will be held in the BP Design Theater, 401A Joseph E. Usibelli Building. Join us for the 2026 Restorative Justice Symposium, “Navigating the Weeds of Restorative Justice Practice.” This free, fully virtual event brings together practitioners, community members and partners from across Alaska to explore the evolving landscape of restorative justice. Sessions will highlight lived experiences in restorative processes, examine formal legal pathways into RJ programs, and take a closer look at the vital role of facilitators. The symposium also features interactive program development dialogues where emerging Alaska initiatives will share their work and gather feedback from attendees. About the Restorative Justice Symposium Starting in 2023, University of Alaska professors Dr. Rei Shimizu (University of Alaska Anchorage School of Social Work) and Dr. Ingrid Johnson (University of Alaska Fairbanks Justice Department) have brought Alaskans together each Spring to explore and expand the use of restorative justice (RJ) to address harms in our communities. Alternating between in person and online formats, the specific objectives of each symposium vary while the overarching goals remain the same: Increase awareness about the possibilities of RJ; Empower individuals and communities to develop and expand their RJ programs; and Connect with each other to build support and knowledge networks.
