Systems Engineering for Aerospace & Defense Systems Workshop Provided by The University of Tennessee Space Institute This workshop presents engineering students, practitioners, team leaders and program/project managers with the major concepts and methods involved in applying system engineering to the management of technology programs/projects especially in the aerospace and defense domains. It emphasizes defining customer needs and required functionality early in the development cycle, writing good requirements, developing and maintaining program communication tools including program plans and development artifacts, employing an iterative design synthesis approach using trade studies and analytical decision making, defining and executing verification and validation methods to ensure the system meets customer requirements, and considering all aspects of the product lifecycle throughout the development process such as cost, schedule, testing, production/manufacturing, system performance, operations and end-of-life/disposal. The workshop is designed to prepare participants to think and evaluate the critical issues involved in systems and their management from an industry and government engineering point of view. The workshop includes an introduction to Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) including its benefits and available tools and resources. Through in-class exercises and real-world examples from industry and government in the aerospace and defense domains, it enhances learning the concepts, principles, processes and tools for an integrated program and systems engineering management approach needed to successfully execute complex programs today. It prepares participants with a foundational understanding for applying systems engineering on the job. May is recognized as Skin Cancer Awareness Month, a time dedicated to spreading awareness and education about a disease that one in five Americans will develop in their lifetime. When caught and treated early, skin cancer is highly curable. Early detection is key, which is why Dermatology Specialists is offering free skin cancer screenings throughout the month of May. Skin cancer can generally be divided into two types – non-melanoma (including basal and squamous cell carcinomas) and melanoma, with melanoma being the least common and most aggressive. There are many effective treatments for eliminating skin cancer. Which treatment option is best depends on a variety of factors including type of skin cancer, location, size, and features noted in the biopsy specimen results. Dermatology Specialists will be offering free screenings for skin cancer at select locations throughout Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and Mississippi in the hopes of helping community members keep their skin healthy and catch skin cancer early. *Free screenings are available at select Dermatology Specialists locations during the month of May to anyone 18 years or older who has not had a professional skin exam within the last 12 months. Through Export Alabama, the office provides customized export training, foreign market research, and hands-on assistance to help businesses navigate financing, compliance, and international growth. Together, these services equip Alabama businesses with the tools, connections, and intelligence needed to compete and succeed globally.   EVENT SPEAKERS David Sides International Project Manager, Office of Global Business Alabama Department of Commerce David Sides serves as an International Project Manager within the Office of Global Business at the Alabama Department of Commerce. In this role, he works to market Alabama’s global competitiveness and advance job creation and economic growth through international engagement. The Office of Global Business is responsible for assisting Alabama companies in accessing foreign markets; supporting and coordinating diplomatic visits; supporting Alabama’s foreign direct investment attraction efforts; and strengthening Alabama’s international ecosystem. The Office of Global Business manages Export Alabama, a tight-knit alliance of local, state and federal partners with the fundamental objective of helping Alabama companies grow their business internationally. Sides is a two-time graduate of Mississippi State University with undergraduate degrees in international finance and German, as well as a master’s degree in German. He and his wife live in Birmingham with their Siberian husky, Franklin, and their rabbit, Bertie. Robert Stackpole Director, Alabama District Office International Trade Administration, U.S. Department of Commerce Robert Stackpole serves as Director of the Alabama District Office of the U.S. Department of Commerce’s International Trade Administration. In this role, he leads export promotion and trade counseling efforts across the state, helping Alabama companies grow through international sales. His office supports U.S. firms with trade counseling, market intelligence, business matchmaking, and commercial diplomacy—leveraging the U.S. Commercial Service’s global network of offices in over 75 countries. With more than 25 years of experience in international trade spanning both public service and the private sector, Robert is a Certified Global Business Professional and has completed extensive advanced training in global business strategy, export compliance, and trade policy. He joined the U.S. Department of Commerce in 2008 and has remained focused on helping U.S. firms compete effectively in global markets. He currently serves as Chair of the Alabama World Trade Association, Executive Secretary of the Alabama District Export Council, and Co-Lead of the Export Alabama Alliance. He previously served as Global Team Leader for the International Trade Administration’s Travel & Tourism industry team.

The Ambassador Program consists of enthusiastic Chamber volunteers who seek to grow professionally and personally by building business relationships within the community. If you have a desire to become more active in the local business environment, raise awareness about your business or organization, network, and give back to your community, this program is for you! The Emissary Program is designed to increase membership value and retention rates. Members who are offered the responsibility of being an Emissary (advocates for the Chamber to current members) have already shown a strong sense of commitment and dependability by being an outstanding Chamber member. They are then extended an invitation to become a part of this program.   Every year, our Ambassadors and Emissaries donate more than 9,000 hours to build strong Chamber member relationships and raise community awareness, and this Chamber is stronger because of them!
