Over the past 21 years, he has channeled his knowledge and experience into creating a natural wildlife habitat within his own backyard garden to attract native and migrating birds. Herb is an Honorary Master Gardener, serving as an instructor for Master Gardener classes covering three counties, and he has provided workshops for the annual Alabama Audubon Mountain Workshop. Herb and his wife Terry sponsored and helped develop the Lewis Birding Trail at the Huntsville Botanical Garden, where he also serves as a volunteer docent. Hypertufa pots are fun and easy to make creating unique containers for your home garden. These containers are composed of Portland cement, perlite, peat moss and water which looks like concrete, but is very lightweight. The best way to learn is hands-on! In this class you’ll be making a flower pot(s) to take home learning the step by step process to making hypertufa pots. This hobby is addictive, so once you start, you won’t want to stop! You’ll take home directions, care instructions, and creative ideas to further your garden experience. Capacity is limited, so reserve your spot today! About Your InstructorRebecca Turk has been teaching hypertufa classes for more than a decade and loved adding new unique containers to her home landscape. Rebecca holds a Master of Science degree in Horticulture from North Carolina State University and a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from Stephen F. Austin State University. She discovered her passion for public horticulture and teaching through her mom and her various employments at the SFA Mast Arboretum, “Nacogdoches Naturally” Education Program, Missouri Botanical Garden, JC Raulston Arboretum, and Moore Farms Botanical Garden. At Huntsville Botanical Garden, she serves as the Vice President of Learning and Public Engagement. She has a strong passion for educating the community, leadership, public horticulture, and sharing her love for the outdoors while teaching. She and her husband Christopher love their shared interest of horticulture and enjoy every moment outside with their sweet daughters Emilia and Ila. Join us for the Garden’s inaugural Canstruction Competition, taking place March 6–8, 2026. What is Canstruction? Canstruction is a unique design-and-build competition where teams create large-scale, imaginative sculptures entirely from full cans of food. These impressive can-creations blend artistic design with community service, helping raise awareness and fight hunger—because every can counts. Teams will design and construct larger-than-life structures made entirely of canned goods, which will be on public display at the Grisham Pavilion. Located outside the gated garden areas, the exhibit is free for spectators to enjoy. Following the event, all donated cans will be given to the North Alabama Food Bank, turning creativity into meaningful community impact. Come be inspired by art, generosity, and teamwork—and see how imagination can help nourish our neighbors. Competition TimelineSpectators are welcome to stop by the Grisham Pavilion at any time to watch the can-creation process in action. To see the completed can-creations and cast your votes, visit on Sunday, March 8, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. March 6: 2 PM – 4 PM Teams may drop off cans and stage.
