Join us on Labor Day (Monday, September 5th) for our annual event celebrating the life and legacy of Birmingham birder Russ Bailey. Over the years, Russ dedicated countless Labor Days to impromptu field trips in pursuit of southbound migrants, a tradition that continues with this great beginner bird walk to the greenway along the Cahaba River at the Trussville Sports Complex—a fully paved, mile-long path with benches along the way. All ages and abilities welcome! The details: Meetup is at 8 a.m. at the Trussville Senior Center parking lot (504 Cherokee Drive, Trussville). As always, remember to bring your binoculars, plenty of water and snacks, insect repellent, rain gear, sunblock, and seasonally appropriate attire. Swift Night Out: Montgomery

Register hereSwift Night Out is back, and we’re partnering with the Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources to have it in Montgomery! Join us as we enjoy the evening with one of our favorite urban birds, the chimney swift (Chaetura pelagica). All ages and abilities welcome! After these aerial acrobats have fledged their young and cleared out their nests, the entire North American population makes its way south to winter along the remote headwaters of the Amazon River. On their way there, they congregate in huge roosting flocks with as many as two or three thousand birds sharing a single chimney—numbers that make for a tremendous spectacle when they all pour into the tiny opening at once. Together, we’ll wait for sunset (6:59 p.m.) and watch the swifts work themselves up into their nightly “swiftnado.” Chimney Swifts at Avondale Elementary. Field Trip: Cahaba River Park

Please do not request registration for others when submitting your request. Cahaba River Park is a joint venture between the Alabama Forever Wild Land Trust and Shelby County. The county has developed outdoor amenities at the park, including three parking areas and two pavilions with restrooms. The park’s 1,505 acres are comprised of dry oak and pine forest with recovering clearcuts of pine plantation and moist, steep slopes on the river banks. The park has approximately one mile of frontage on the Cahaba River. Birds typically found in the bottomland trails include Northern parulas, white-eyed vireos, herons, kingfishers, tanagers, and other summer and fall woodland species. We will also be on the lookout for fall migrants. Last year we were disappointed when this trip was rained out. Plan to join Marj Young and Anne Miller this year to explore this beautiful area. The details: Meetup is at 7 a.m. at the McDonald’s on US 31 in Hoover, located at 1731 Montgomery Highway (US 31) across from the Galleria. If you prefer to meet there, we should arrive at the park by 8:30 a.m. The parking location is the pavilion and lot closest to the river at Shelby County Rd 251/River Road (GPS coordinates are here). 2022 Fall Bird Count

This year, we’re continuing that tradition with our fifty-eighth annual Fall Bird Count Saturday, September 24th. We encourage you to participate at your home feeder, in your backyard, or at a local park! *Click here for detailed instructions.* Fall migrants, resident hawks, large waders, even common birds like Northern mockingbirds and American robins, are all fair game—each sighting contributes to a half-century-long dataset with important information on shifting ranges, the effects of urbanization, and climate-related population changes. *IMPORTANT: If you are reporting for Jefferson, Shelby, and St. Clair counties, the best way to submit your data is by creating an eBird list and tagging Greg Harber (gharber2). You may also email your sightings to Greg here. If you are in any other county outside of those three in Alabama, the best way to submit your data is by logging your sightings in eBird and tagging Alabama Audubon (ALAudubon). Field Trip: Hoover—Flemming Park on the Cahaba

Flemming Park on the Cahaba is a new park at Trace Crossing in Hoover with about five miles of hiking and biking trails, two restrooms, and a pavilion. There is a gravel parking area that can hold eight to ten vehicles. We will be looking for fall migrants and other riparian species. The details: Meetup is at 7 a.m. in the parking lot of the Publix at Trace Crossing (2543 John Hawkins Pkwy, Hoover, AL 35244). From there, we will caravan down Stadium Trace Parkway to reconvene at the park. Field Trip: Cheaha State Park

At over 2,400 feet above sea level, Cheaha Mountain is Alabama’s highest point, a magnet for fall migrants, and an almost ideal location for an autumn birding trip. Cheaha State Park is located in the middle of the Talladega National Forest so the area consists of vast tracts of undeveloped forested land, and these woodlands provide nesting and wintering habitat for a wide variety of birds, as well as providing corridors for spring and fall migrants. Join us on this full-day trip to one of Alabama’s most beautiful highland parks on the Alabama Birding Trail. The details: Meetup is at 7 a.m. at the Eastwood Chick-fil-A (1648 Montclair Road, Irondale), located just south of the Walmart and west of the Starbucks. From there, we’ll carpool and caravan east on I-20 to Oxford/Anniston (Exit 188), where we will reconvene in the parking lot of Cracker Barrel (220 Leon Smith Parkway, Oxford, 36203) at 8:00 a.m. Once we’re all together we will head down scenic roads to the park entrance. Note: Admission to the park is $5 for adults under 62, $2 for seniors and for children ages 6 to 11. For more information, visit the park website. Field Trip: Vulcan Trail

The Kiwanis Vulcan trail is a two-mile jogging and biking trail extending from directly under Vulcan to Green Springs Highway and serving as the future hub for Birmingham’s planned 750-mile Red Rock Trail System. Join Susan Barrow and Linda Neighbors to explore this pleasant, downtown trail with great views and lots of shade. All ages and abilities welcome! The details: Meetup will be at 8 a.m. in the parking lot off of Richard Arrington Jr. Blvd. S. beneath Vulcan (located approximately between 1867 and 1871 Richard Arrington Jr. Blvd. S.) Note: There are limited spots, so those who do not need accessible parking may want to park in Vulcan’s parking lot located at 1701 Valley View Drive and use the staircase to walk through the park down to the trail to meet us. As always, remember to bring your binoculars, plenty of water and snacks, insect repellent, rain gear, sunblock, and seasonally appropriate attire. Field Trip: Alabama A&M Farm

Please do not request registration for others when submitting your request. Alabama A&M’s Winfred Thomas Agricultural Research Station consists of 900 acres of grasslands and agricultural fields, providing a rare area of open country filled with native birds. This trip will be primarily car birding. We will caravan and carpool to various sites to find our target birds—certainly seeing hawks soaring above us (Cooper’s hawks, red-tailed hawks, and northern harriers), as well as grassland birds (loggerhead shrikes, eastern meadowlarks, and wintering sparrows such as white-throated, Savannah, and vesper sparrows). There is also a pond on the property, so we have the possibility of seeing various ducks. This outing is open to all levels of birders. Other stops might be included based on how the day goes. The details: Meetup is at 6:30 a.m. at the Fultondale Chick-fil-A (215 Howell Street), located off I-65 (Exit 267) on Walker Chapel Road. Together, we’ll caravan up the interstate toward Decatur and the Priceville exit (Exit 334) to reconvene around 7:30 a.m. at the Hardee’s located at 3241 Point Mallard Parkway SE. We’re meeting earlier than usual because from there we’ll still have a forty-five minute drive to get to our final destination. A full tank of gas will be a must for this trip. As always, remember to bring your binoculars, plenty of water and snacks, insect repellent, rain gear, sunblock, and seasonally appropriate attire.
