Asia’s motherhood has always been an ongoing struggle rather than an obvious instinct. Becoming a mother at a very early age has shaped Asia’s relationship with her teenage daughter Vika. Despite living together, Asia and Vika barely interact with one another. Asia concentrates on her job as a nurse while Vika hangs out at the skatepark with her friends. Their routine is shaken when Vika’s health deteriorates rapidly. Asia must step in and become the mother Vika so desperately needs. Performers include Jon Pousette-Dart, Johnny Irion and a performance by Emotions Physical Theatre. And for children: learn a magic trick & clown tips with Mr. Amazing, Carlo Pellegrini.Performers include: Jon Pousette-Dart released a solo record, "Talk", in 2015 to critical acclaim! Jon Pousette-Dart is a gilded tenor and a smooth hand on guitar. "Pousette-Dart's compositions brim with optimism, introspection and subtle grace." -- Performing Songwriter. The Pousette-Dart Band reflected the sounds of the ‘70s, securing their place in the musical firmament by purveying that harmonious soft rock sound. Signed to Capitol Records, they put out four critically hailed albums for the label (Pousette-Dart Band, Amnesia, Pousette-Dart Band 3, and Never Enough) and a recent compilation (The Best of Pousette-Dart Band.)Johnny Irion is best known for his folk explorations with his wife Sarah Lee Guthrie, including their recent Wassaic Way produced by Jeff Tweedy, and his latest rock venture with US ELEVATOR, which Will Hermes of Rolling Stone Magazine praised for its “songs that are hand crafted as lovingly as the jeans on the back of After the Goldrush.” Irion has earned a reputation as one of the most exciting artists across the folk-rock spectrum, from his uncannily Young-Nilsson-esque voice to his melodic and lyrical mettle.Irion wrapped up his latest solo record, Driving Friend, in the spring of 2018. The album was produced by Tim Bluhm, backed by Blackwing, the artisan pencil makers with a diverse musical heritage, and featured members of Dawes, Wilco, Nicki Bluhm and The Gamblers. The record ranged across a wide expanse of roots genres, from blues and gospel to folk and country. Everything about it feels authentically crafted, a carving out of raw, lived American experience.Emotions Physical Theatre will perform Intimacy Lost: The Living Gallery. Dancers become moving exhibits that come to life through hip hop, ballet and contemporary movement. Shawn Rawls, the Artistic Director of Emotions Physical Theatre, sees his dance troupe as serving a bridge between art and entertainment. Using an organic blend of contemporary dance with hip hop, ballet, gymnastics and breakdance, Emotions Physical Theatre is committed to making dance theater that is fun, accessible, and innovative. The troupe breaks down walls between stage performance and spectators to create an experience for audience members that goes beyond a typical dance show by including audience participation and by creating in unique spaces. The troupe believes that dance theater should be transparent and easy to understand while inspiring thought and communicating ideas in a clear and aesthetically pleasing way.Rawls creates dance art with the goal of fostering personal growth. He incorporates research from psychology and sociology into their productions so an audience member might walk away from the experience with a thought-provoking tidbit of practical information.Kids will delight in the antics of Carlo Pellegrini, (aka, Mr. Amazing) by learning a magic trick and clown tips. Pellegrini is the co-founder and Artistic Director of NY’s oldest all-youth circus Amazing Grace Circus. He performed for many years as White Clown, Acrobat and Ringmaster with Big Apple Circus, The Royal Lichtenstein Circus, Piccolo Circus NYC, was a professional dancer with internationally acclaimed Nikolais Dance Theatre, and has appeared in movies, TV and many radio commercials over the years. A young punk who thinks she knows it all. An old man who knows he doesn’t. They strike up a conversation, it becomes life-changing. A deepening knowledge occurs as they walk the streets of LA. He is a Holocaust survivor she a massage-parlorworker on the run and a Holocaust denier, though he doesn’t hold any of that against her. Newcomer 14-year old Margot Josefsohn plays angry but stunningly naïve Casey, living from hand to mouth on the streets of LA fending off the frightening advances of men, having nowhere to go. She trusts no one. Samuel, played by the sublime (multiple Emmy Award-winning actor Ed Asner) trusts only a few. She tells him she hates Jews, he asks her if she needs a place to stay. The two form an unexpected friendship, which gradually blossoms into a new family unit – him providing her the support and guidance that was lacking in her life, and her offering him the glimpse of the fatherhood that was torn from him many years prior. Hollywood's Star System and How It Works
Apr 19

Monday, April 19 from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm

Suffern Free Library

For more than a century, Hollywood has relied on star power as the most reliable way to draw an audience. From the early days of silent movies, when Mary Pickford was able to command $10,000 a week to modern times, when actors like Tom Cruise and Tom Hanks are guaranteed $20 million (or more) a picture, the film studios have recognized the crucial role stars played at the box office. This presentation will look at the history of movie stardom—how originally film actors weren’t even identified by name, how Mary Pickford became “America’s Sweetheart” and the first real film star, how the Hollywood studios manufactured stars like Judy Garland, Mickey Rooney, and Lana Turner during its Golden Age, how the star system changed once television came on the scene, and how actors like Jack Nicholson, Meryl Streep, and Denzel Washington ushered in a new definition of stardom during the last few decades. Presented by Brian Rose via Zoom. Register online. After you register, you will receive a confirmation email. The bottom of the email contains a Zoom link, meeting ID and passcode to enter the meeting.

Syndrome K

JCC of Rockland

It might just be the only disease to have ever actually saved lives. And it didn’t really exist. Syndrome K is a feature documentary in production that tells the story of three courageous Roman Catholic doctors who saved Jews by convincing the Nazis that these Jews were infected with a highly deadly and contagious disease that the doctors called Syndrome K. After Mussolini was removed, and Italy signed an Armistice with the Allies, the Nazis became infuriated, and they occupied Rome. The occupying Nazis deported over 1,000 Jews to Auschwitz from the Jewish Ghetto in Rome in October 1943 and most never returned. Many Jews sought refuge in Fatebenefratelli hospital where the three doctors invented the disease to protect them. Dr. Ossicini was interviewed for this film as were survivors. The footage amassed by the filmmaker and from archives is chilling and the heroism is pronounced. It is a story that needs to be told.
