VIRTUAL Beatrix Potter's Gardening Life
May 3
Livingston Public Library
Livingston Public Library

Monday, May 3 from 7:00 pm to 8:15 pm

Livingston Public Library

Helen Beatrix Potter was an English writer, illustrator, natural scientist and conservationist; she was best known for her children's books featuring animals, such as those in “The Tale of Peter Rabbit”.When we think of Beatrix Potter, we imagine blue-jacketed bunnies and other fuzzy fauna. But Potter, an intriguing character in her own right, was also quite interested in plants and gardens. Her classic characters exist in a charmed world filled with flowers and gardens, a world born of Potter’s own passion for nature. This virtual lecture by horticulturist, lecturer and author, Marta McDowell, explores Potter's botanical art, the flora and horticulture that appears in her "little books" and Potter's own garden in England's Lake District. It is based on McDowell’s engaging and delightfully illustrated book, Beatrix Potter’s Gardening Life: The Plants and Places That Inspired the Classic Children’s Tales (now in its seventh printing) in which she traces the development and eventual blossoming of Beatrix Potter’s life as a gardener, from her childhood interest in plants, through her realization as an artist and author, to her final years as an estate farmer and naturalist.Marta McDowell teaches landscape history and horticulture at the New York Botanical Garden and consults for private clients and public gardens. A popular lecturer, she has been a featured speaker at locations ranging from the Chicago Botanic Garden to the Smithsonian Institution to the Beatrix Potter Society's Linder Lecture at the Sloane Club in London. She worked as a horticulturist for five years at Reeves-Reed Arboretum in New Jersey. Marta's writings typically follow the relationship between the pen and the trowel, that is authors and their gardens. Her latest book is Emily Dickinson's Gardening Life. Timber Press also published The World of Laura Ingalls Wilder, and New York Times-bestselling All the Presidents' Gardens. Marta's new book, Unearthing The Secret Garden, about the children's classic and its author, is due out from Timber Press in 2021.The link to the zoom session will be emailed the day before the event. This program is made possible with the support of The Friends of the Livingston Public Library.

Livingston Public Library

Monday, May 10 from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm

Livingston Public Library

Liberty Hall Museum is a historic house and garden museum located in Union, New Jersey. Liberty Hall was the historic residence of William Livingston, the first Governor of New Jersey and then was the home of six generations of the Kean family. As each new generation of Keans moved into the home, the previous generation left behind their possessions, including china dishes, diaries, furniture, jewelry, and their clothing. Using Liberty Hall's extensive fashion and textile collection, this virtual program by a museum educator explores American fashion and fashion-trends between the 1700s and the 1950s. Presented will be images of the textiles, the people who owned them, and the home itself that helps facilitate the story of fashion over three centuries. Learn how Queen Victoria influenced the dresses worn by American women, discover how colonial-era fashion trends made a reappearance in the 1950s, explore vintage fashion accessories and essentials including Victorian-era undergarments, beaded shoes, and ostrich feather hats, and have an up close and personal experience with the extravagant and rarely seen textile collection at Liberty Hall. It is a journey through fashion like no other!Information on connecting to the Zoom chat room will be emailed the day before the event. This program is made possible with the support of The Friends of the Livingston Public Library.

VIRTUAL Livi Writes: Publishing 101
May 13
Livingston Public Library
Livingston Public Library

Thursday, May 13 from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm

Livingston Public Library

Have you ever wondered how books make it to the shelf of your favorite library or bookstore? Are you an aspiring writer interested in learning more about the publishing process? If you’re curious about how a book transforms from an author’s draft to publication, the Livingston Public Library invites you to join us for a virtual lecture on Publishing 101presented by Kate Napolitano, Executive Editior Dey Street Books, an imprint of Harper Collins. From ideation to publication, this lecture will take us on the journey of a book’s creation by explaining the publishing process that authors (and editors) go through. Following the lecture there will be a Q&A session to answer any questions you may have about publication. Kate Napolitano focuses on the publication of nonfiction titles in the categories of humor, pop culture, and narrative nonfiction. She has edited New York Times bestsellers No One Asked For This by humorist Cazzie David, Make Change by activist Shaun King, The Last Book On The Left from the horror-comedy podcast Last Podcast on the Left, and The 99% Invisible Field Guide To The City by Roman Mars and Kurt Kohlstedt; as well as TIME Magazine’s Best Book of 2020 Can’t Even: How Millennials Became the Burnout Generation by culture writer Anne Helen Petersen. This event is open to all, but registration is required. You can register online through the Library’s event calendar at www.livingstonlibrary.org. Information on how to access the Zoom event will be emailed to registered participants the day before the program. This program is made possible by the Friends of the Livingston Public Library.

VIRTUAL Let's Talk About Books: The Library Book by Susan Orlean
May 14
Livingston Public Library
Livingston Public Library

Friday, May 14 from 12:45 pm to 2:00 pm

Livingston Public Library

The next virtual meeting of Let’s Talk About Books, a monthly book discussion group at the Livingston Library, will be on May 14, 2021 to discuss “The Library Book," by Susan Orlean."On the morning of April 29, 1986, a fire alarm sounded in the Los Angeles Public Library. As the moments passed, the patrons and staff who had been cleared out of the building realized this was not the usual false alarm. As one fireman recounted later, “Once that first stack got going, it was Goodbye, Charlie.” The fire was disastrous: It reached 2,000 degrees and burned for more than seven hours. By the time it was extinguished, it had consumed 400,000 books and damaged 700,000 more. Investigators descended on the scene, but over thirty years later, the mystery remains: Did someone purposefully set fire to the library—and if so, who?" -- Amazon.com. Iris Leopold is the presenter. The one-hour discussion will begin at 12:45 PM online. The meeting is free and open to everyone interested, whether they have read the book or not. Participants must register in order to receive the link to the program one day ahead of time.

Livingston, NJ 07039

Friday, May 21 from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm

This Senior Happening will be hosted online! Register using the form below and make sure to include your email address. On Friday, May 21st at 1pm you will recieve a link to the private prerecorded YouTube video. “Tenderly: The Songs of Rosemary Clooney” provides a glimpse into the life and recording career of one of the great song stylists of the American Songbook. From Tony Pastor’s Big Band to her starring role in White Christmas, and from her own network television show to sold-out appearances at New York’s famed Rainbow and Stars nightclub Clooney’s appeal was universal. In a career that spanned six decades, her distinctively rich and smooth voice earned her recognition as one of America's premiere pop and jazz singers and afforded her the opportunity to work with generations of musicians and recording artists such as Bing Crosby, Mitch Miller, Nelson Riddle, Margaret Whiting, Frank Sinatra, and many others. Cast bios can be found here.Registration is required for Senior Happening. Senior Happening is made possible in part by funds from the Essex County Division of Cultural Affairs, a partner of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts and through the support from the Friends of the Livingston Library.
