South Bend’s robust trail system is open all year long, and there are some added benefits to checking it out in the winter. Bare trees mean you can see new views, snow and ice make unique sounds while you walk, and colder temperatures help you expend more calories! If that’s not enough to motivate you to get outside, we’ve concocted a little encouragement for you – Willy Wonka-style. Each week we’ll highlight a trail in South Bend, and we’ll randomly place a golden ticket somewhere on the path. When you find a golden ticket, take a photo with it and post to social media tagging @sbvpa. At the end of the week, we’ll look at all the entries and randomly choose a winner to receive a prize pack valued at over $250! When a woman—known only as Mother—moves her family from Atlanta to its wealthy suburbs she discovers that neither the times nor the people have changed since her childhood in a small Southern town. Laskar's stunning debut skillfully tackles hefty topics such as bullying racism and terrorism in a mosaic life-flashing-before-one's-eyes narrative. Set in 2017 in a wealthy suburb near Atlanta the novel centers on Mother an Indian-American woman in her 40s with three daughters and a husband who travels internationally more than he's at home. Laskar touchingly shows how Mother just wants to have a normal life with her family and rise above prejudice. Elevated by its structure this is a striking depiction of a single life. Meeting 1 January 25: Read to chapter "In Media Res" Meeting 2 February 1: Read chapter "In Media Res" to the end. Author Devi Laskar will join us for the discussion! Teen Dating Prevention Month The numbers are shocking. 1 in 4 teens self-report physical, emotional, verbal or sexual violence each year in the United States. 11% of Indiana high school students report they had been forced to have sexual intercourse- a number much higher than the national average. Nobody wants to hear these statistics, but they cannot be ignored. Join us on February14th as we wear orange to show solidarity with young people and to support healthy relationships! Take a picture in your best orange gear and share it on social media with the hashtag #Orange4Love or #YWCATDVP Here’s where the YWCA North Central Indiana is stepping in. Our Teen dating Violence Prevention Specialist is continuing to provide education to students in local Counties. This specialist will teach the danger signs of an abusive relationship and guide students to help others or seek help when needed. Stop by anytime in February to enjoy this traveling exhibit from Indiana Historical Society and sponsored by Historic New Carlisle, Inc.You will be taken through the rise and fall of prohibition in Indiana and throughout the entire country. The exhibit spans the dawn of the temperance movement of the 1900s, the roaring 1920s and the unprecedented repeal of a constitutional amendment during the Great Depression. The era’s conflicting cultures are demonstrated through colorful historic figures such as Edward S. Shumaker of the Indiana Anti-Saloon League, as well as the bootleggers, moonshiners, and bathtub gin distillers who found their way around the law in Indiana. You can also take a look at how the prohibition movement is reflected in current issues. Made possible by Kroger.
