Feb 18

Harris Theater Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 15222

Tuesday, February 18 from 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm

Pittsburgh Cultural Trust

See the 2019 Golden Bear winner, Synonyms, at Pittsburgh's first arthouse cinema! --- A disgruntled ex-Israeli soldier moves to Paris with the intention of erasing his national identity and starting over … will it work? In Paris, things do not exactly get off to a good start for the newly arrived Yoav. He knocks on the door of the flat where he's supposed to stay only to discover the place is empty. While he is taking a bath there, his belongings are stolen. Yet this young Israeli, who has arrived with such great expectations, will not be dissuaded that easily. Desperate to erase his origins, Yoav sees becoming French as his only hope for salvation. Step one is to replace his language. From now on, he will not utter a single word of Hebrew and his dictionary becomes his constant companion. The necessary visits to the Israeli embassy annoy Yoav -- he finds his compatriots to be a total burden -- but the naturalization test also has its pitfalls. And the young French couple whom he befriends has some rather strange ideas about how to help him. Based on the real life experiences of writer-director Nadav Lapid's (The Kindergarten Teacher, Policeman), Synonyms explores the challenges of putting down roots in a new place. Yoav's attempts to find himself awaken past demons and open up an existential abyss in this tragicomic puzzle that wisely knows how to keep its secrets. Directed by Nadav Lapid / 123 minutes / In French and Hebrew language with English subtitles

What's Next: Spirituality for the Second Half of Life
Feb 20
Shaler North Hills Library
North Hills Community Baptist Church

Thursday, February 20 from 12:15 pm to 1:15 pm

Shaler North Hills Library

Join Rev. Ingrid Kalchthaler (Miss Ing), Director of Pastor Care at the North Hills Community Baptist Church, in this six-week study as we contemplate the second half of our lives from a spiritual perspective. When we hear the term “the second half of life” thoughts of getting old and dealing with health concerns come to mind to the exclusion of others. Not true! The “second half” of a life is more about thinking in a new, broader, more inclusive way. US culture seems to be all about the “first half,” finding love, building a family, a career, acquiring things, attempting to create security. It seems that in the “second half” we need to “let go” of everything, downsize our possessions, say goodbye to our friends and family, some of our physical ability. And that’s not easy. And it doesn’t seem pleasant, indeed, at times it is very painful. Yet there is much more to the second half of our lives. There is so much more to be gained as we begin the process of letting go. We can let go of black and white thinking, of regrets and resentments and misconceptions. We can embrace forgiveness, compassion and the truth that we are much more that what we have accumulated and what we have accomplished. In the second half of life, we can begin to cease asking “Who am I?” and instead serve God by being who we ARE, divinely created, part of God’s world, agents of God’s love. No matter what half of life in which you find yourself (and indeed, it may feel as if it changes from week to week!) we will come together to explore this broad, encompassing path of spirituality. Using Richard Rohr’s work Falling Upward and Joan Chittister’s The Gift of Years we will explore this journey together. Please consider joining us for a six week study on this empowering approach to our birthright as God’s children.Daytime sessions will be held at the North Hills Community Baptist Church (7801 Thompson Run Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15237) in the Café from 12:15 – 1:15pm. Miss Ing is an ordained American Baptist pastor and her path is Christianity, but this class welcomes people from all faith perspectives. Thursday, February 20 from 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm

We welcome Eko Chamber Collective, featuring an eclectic roster of Pittsburgh-based musicians including Herman Pearl, aka Soy Sos, (electronics), Brittany Trotter (flute), Anqwenique Kinsel (voice), Sadie Powers (bass), Paul Thompson (bass) and Brian Riordan (live processing). The collective is a live electro-acoustic ensemble that utilizes spatialized performance techniques that cater to reverberant spaces. With the use of a multi-channel sound system, the group creates an immersive sound environment by collaborating with the acoustics and architecture of spaces rather than working against them, and this site-specific performance has been developed with our entrance space in mind. Audience members are encouraged to move about the performance space, as the ensemble’s compositions are created to lend themselves to unique sonic experiences, which unfold differently depending on one's vantage point. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. This performance is primarily standing room only. Limited seating is available upon advance request. We are committed to offering inclusive, engaging experiences for people of all abilities. To request accommodations to enhance your visit, please contact access@warhol.org or call 412.237.8354.

This tour traces Warhol’s romantic relationships and queer identity against the backdrop of the historical gay rights movement in the United States. Tours meet on the museum's seventh floor. Sound Series: Microtonal Festival: Ray-Kallay Duo/MikroEnsemble
Feb 29
Andy Warhol Museum
117 Sandusky Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15212

Saturday, February 29 from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm

Andy Warhol Museum

Pianists Vicki Ray and Aron Kallay of the Ray-Kallay Duo have given hundreds of world premieres in Los Angeles and across the country. The Ray-Kallay Duo is dedicated to expanding the sonic possibilities of the multiple keyboard concert, often using two acoustic grands, two keyboards or combinations of both. In redefining the 21st century piano duo, they also frequently include live electronics and alternate tuning systems in their programs. MikroEnsemble is a new Finland-based contemporary music group specializing in microtonal music. The core of the ensemble’s instrumentation is formed by new instruments specifically designed for quarter-tone playing. The newest of these instruments is the quarter-tone piano, built by Otso Haapamäki in 2015. In addition, MikroEnsemble’s original instrument pallet includes a quarter-tone accordion, quarter-tone guitar, quarter-tone flute and quarter-tone clarinet, along with violin and cello. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Co-presented with Music on the Edge series of the University of Pittsburgh Department of Music

Sound Series: Microtonal Festival: Del Sol & FretX Guitar Duo
Mar 1
Andy Warhol Museum

Andy Warhol Museum

Hailed by Gramophone as “masters of all musical things they survey” and two-time top winner of the Chamber Music America/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming, the Del Sol String Quartet is a leading force in 21st century chamber music. Del Sol’s collaborative performance projects and chamber music programs explore narratives and cultures from around the world, reflecting the stories and sounds of the Pacific Rim as vibrantly as those heard in European concert halls or East Coast art spaces. Touted as a “gifted young guitarist” by the New York Times, and “a guitarist to keep an eye on” by the Washington Post, Mak Grgic is emerging as a star on the worldwide stage. An expansive and adventurous repertoire attests to his versatility and wide-ranging interests. From the ethnic music of his native Balkans to extreme avant-garde and microtonal music, his roles as soloist, collaborator and recording artist are fueled by curiosity, imagination and boundless energy. Guitarist Daniel Lippel, called an “exciting soloist” by the New York Times and “precise and sensitive” by the Boston Globe, has carved out a unique and diverse career that ranges through solo and chamber music performances, innovative commissioning and recording projects, and performances in diverse contexts. He has premiered more than fifty new solo and chamber works, many written for him, recording several on the independent label he co-founded and directs, New Focus Recordings. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. Co-presented with Music on the Edge series of the University of Pittsburgh Department of Music
