SummerArts offers four weeks of multi–arts workshops for children entering grades 3-9. Each week, students take part in a wide variety of artistic activities with daily sessions in visual arts, music and movement/theater, led by teaching artists who are experts in their field. In between classes kids can play outside, spend time with friends or work on a project at their own pace. Workshops for older students are more intensive and provide an opportunity for more sophisticated exploration and execution. The SummerArts program is specially designed to provide kids with a deeply creative, artistic experience. Themes and activities vary each week, giving students the chance to explore art in many forms and diverse media. Many campers are introduced to new artistic expressions and media that they never knew they loved! Classes are perfect for beginners as well as more seasoned creators. Join Katie for a lively discussion of Jennifer Egan's The Candy House. It’s 2010. Staggeringly successful and brilliant tech entrepreneur Bix Bouton is desperate for a new idea. He’s forty, with four kids, and restless when he stumbles into a conversation with mostly Columbia professors, one of whom is experimenting with downloading or “externalizing” memory. Within a decade, Bix’s new technology, Own Your Unconscious—that allows you access to every memory you’ve ever had, and to share every memory in exchange for access to the memories of others—has seduced multitudes. But not everyone. In spellbinding linked narratives, Egan spins out the consequences of Own Your Unconscious through the lives of multiple characters whose paths intersect over several decades. Egan introduces these characters in an astonishing array of styles—from omniscient to first person plural to a duet of voices, an epistolary chapter, and a chapter of tweets. In the world of Egan’s spectacular imagination, there are “counters” who track and exploit desires and there are “eluders,” those who understand the price of taking a bite of the Candy House.Intellectually dazzling and extraordinarily moving, The Candy House is a bold, brilliant imagining of a world that is moments away. With a focus on social media, gaming, and alternate worlds, you can almost experience moving among dimensions in a role-playing game. Egan delivers a fierce and exhilarating testament to the tenacity and transcendence of human longing for real connection, love, family, privacy and redemption.Reserve a copy HERE. Reserve the ebook on LIBBY. Reserve the audiobook on LIBBY. Reserve the ebook on the CLOUD. This book is companion to Jennifer Egan's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel A Visit from the Good Squad, but does not rely on your having read it first. This book can stand alone. You will receive the Zoom link approximately one hour before the discussion starts.

Join Katie for a lively discussion of Helene Wecker's The Golem and the Jinni. The discussion will begin at 7 and then we will be joined by author Helene Wecker at 8pm who will discuss the book with us and answer any questions we may have. Chava is a golem, a creature made of clay, brought to life by a disgraced rabbi who dabbles in dark Kabbalistic magic, created to be the wife of a man who dies at sea on the voyage from Poland. Chava is unmoored and adrift as the ship arrives in New York harbor in 1899.Ahmad is a jinni, a being of fire born in the ancient Syrian desert, trapped in an old copper flask, and released in New York City, though still not entirely free.Ahmad and Chava become unlikely friends and soul mates with a mystical connection. Marvelous and compulsively readable, Helene Wecker's debut novel The Golem and the Jinni weaves strands of Yiddish and Middle Eastern literature, historical fiction and magical fable, into a wondrously inventive and unforgettable tale.Borrow a copy HERE.Get the ebook HERE.Get the audiobook HERE.Get the Hoopla audiobook HERE. Drink & Draw Hastings Public LibraryOrr Room, Lower level 7 Maple AvenueHastings-on-Hudson Admission: $20 per session Register below. You must register and pay in advance below for each session. No payments will be accepted at the door. Drink & Draw is a modern twist on the classic artistic practice of life drawing. Artists of all experience levels and backgrounds are welcome, especially those that have always wanted to try their hand. In this non-instructional event, we aim to create a relaxing, social and inclusive environment for the community to come together for a fun night of drawing. After some mingling with fellow guests, participants will have an opportunity to capture the human body in poses of different lengths, with breaks for refreshments in between. There’s wine, crackers, cheese and cookies to enjoy, and our host curates a playlist to keep your energy flowing. The evening lasts about 2 ½ hours, and participants leave with a collection of their new works… and maybe some new friends too. RiverArts is proud to be able to provide this unique opportunity right here in our Rivertowns, an opportunity which is often only accessible to art students or by traveling into New York City, with a significant investment of time and tuition. Drink & Draw offers a perfect entry-level for the amateur artist, and we have seen beginners improve significantly as their skills develop in subsequent sessions and they draw on their experience and learn from others. Model provided. Please bring your own art supplies and arrive on time. Must be over 18 to attend. All around the world, the words “Wall Street” conjure up a powerful image. For some, it is the center of America’s capitalist system and the engine of its economic growth. For others, it is the home of rapacious bankers and reckless traders whose greed would lead to a global financial crisis. For an Indian-born blackjack player, Wall Street represented something else entirely — a chance for him to play in the largest casino in the world.Kamal Gupta’s improbable journey, from a wide-eyed Indian immigrant to an ultimate insider in the rarefied world of investment banks and hedge funds, is a uniquely American story. Nowhere else would it have been possible for a scrawny computer scientist to enter the world of high finance solely on the basis of his gambling abilities. From New Delhi to Las Vegas to New York, Play It Right is a real-life account of Gupta's darkly comic struggle for survival in an industry where fear and greed rule the day. It isn’t so much a story about money as it is about the human condition and beating the odds, whether at a casino, on Wall Street, or in life itself.Kamal Gupta earned an undergraduate degree in electrical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology in New Delhi — entering the elite institution after only completing eleventh grade — and received a master’s in computer science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in just 11 months. Bored in the tech world, he turned himself into a professional blackjack player, grew his bankroll to thirty-two times its original size, and got barred from several casinos in the process. An unexpected turn of events brought him to Wall Street, where for over two decades he beat the odds in every imaginable way. Gupta lives in the greater New York City area with his family.
