This Thursday, February 25, three trailblazing civil rights advocates will talk via Zoom with Esther Yang from 5:30pm – 6:30pm. Joining Esther are: • Dr. Hazel Dukes, President of the NAACP NYS, NAACP National Board of Directors, NAACP Executive Committee and various NAACP board sub-committees • Mr. & Mrs. Bell, parents of Sean Bell, who was 23, unarmed and killed on his wedding day by 50 bullets by NYC Police Officers • Mrs. Gwendolyn Carr, nationwide speaker, advocate and community leader against racism and injustice whose son, Eric Garner, was suffocated by a white policeman despite his repeated pleas of “I can’t breathe”. On February 25th, City Harvest, New York City’s first and largest food rescue organization, will premiere “The Virtual Winter Family Carnival 2021: Neon Dance Party.” This electric, enjoy-at-home event will include interactive entertainment hosted by City Harvest Board Member, Chair of City Harvest’s Food Council and Iron Chef Geoffrey Zakarian’s daughters, Madeline and Anna, and feature hands-on activities for children and families to enjoy together. Each ticket purchased will support City Harvest’s work feeding the 1 in 3 children and their families facing food insecurity due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Tickets are on sale now through February 12th. The fun begins when your child receives their very own Party Box, delivered to your doorstep, filled with everything you need to bring the party home. Please join us with expert Chris Johnson, who is dedicated to the study of ants, as she shares the fascinating life of ants and their value to our daily lives. Christine Johnson is a Curatorial Associate (Collection Manager) in the Division of Invertebrate Zoology at the American Museum of Natural History, where her focus is to care and digitize (database & image) for the estimated 25 million preserved invertebrate specimens in the collection to make it available to researchers and public. Christine first came to NYC many years ago to study ballet at the Joffrey Ballet School. She then received her B.A. in Psychology at NYC and worked with emotionally troubled children before completing her Ph.D. in Biospsychology at The Graduate School and University Center of the City University of New York. Her research focused on understanding the behavioral and chemical ecology of and interactions between ant social parasites and their hosts, with a specialization on raider ants. Christine continued post-doctoral research on the behavioral and chemical ecology of ants at the University of Helsinki, the Catholic University of Leuven and Ohio State University, before returning to New York City. In her personal life, Chris is a member of the Manhattan Solid Waste Advisory Board and has been very active in the community garden scene, especially in East Harlem.
