RunVenture Series: Delaware Water Gap
Jan 25
NY NJ Trail Conference
Mt. Tammany - Delaware Water Gap

Monday, January 25 All Day

NY NJ Trail Conference

Join us at the Delaware Water Gap during the month of January for the first event in our RunVenture Series! Runners and hikers of all ages and paces are welcome to join us for this semi-virtual event. Each month we will "host" the series at a different location rotating between technical mountain trails one month and then more runnable flatter trails the next month. We are supporting the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference with our RunVenture Series! First up: The Delaware Water Gap! We have 4 different courses that you can choose from: Mt Tammany 5K-ish Mt Minsi 5 Miler Tammany+Minsi 12-ish Miler Tammany+Minsi+Sunfish 19-ish Miler. Each of these courses are technical and have a lot of climbing though not super runnable for many folks (think *power-hiking*) - each course is FUN FUN FUN! Pick your route/distance and then get out there whenever you'd like from January 1-30 2021 to complete the course you signed up for. You can register for multiple events and you are welcome to complete each one multiple times and then submit your best time. Everyone who registers will receive a handcrafted wood medal and have the option to add-on additional Sassquad swag items! We provide a detailed course description and the gpx file. We know it's not the same as a race but this is a great way to get out on the trails to complete a specific course to "race". SELF-SUPPORTED It goes without saying that when you are signing up for this event - you are going to be doing it on your own as a self-supported adventure. The majority of the trails are rugged technical and full of rocks! We recommend bringing the following in your pack: Hardcopy of the map plenty of water (for the 19 milers it's not a bad idea to bring along a filtration system like the Sawyer Mini or purification tablets). Food. Cash/ID. Cell phone and external battery pack. Headlamp and extra batteries. Emergency Mylar blanket (it's 3 inches big and weighs less than 2 oz and can save your life if something bad happened!). An extra layer warmer than you think you need - just in case. Small first aid kit - again it doesn't weigh much or take up a lot of space and it could save your life. And trekking poles will definitely help! Be sure to check the weather and trail conditions before you go it's possible that you may need spikes if there is snow/ice. MT. TAMMANY 5K-ISH The Mt Tammany 5K-ish follows the very well known loop that summits Tammany. This loop climbs to the summit of Tammany on the Red-Dot trail. At the summit you will then follow the Blue-Dot trail back down to the bottom. When you reach the Dunnfield Waterfalls you'll turn left on the Appalachian Trail which will bring you back to the parking lot. The 3.3 mile loop has 1 200 ft of elevation gain and is rated as difficult. Climbing the red-dot trail is very steep and technical. For most runners this loop is not very runnable - but it is FUN FUN FUN! Coming down on the blue-dot trail is also steep and technical. This loop also tends to be very crowded on the weekends which is why we are doing this event in January - hoping the crowds will thin out with the colder weather. Your best shot at avoiding crowds is to start running/hiking by 8am. We recommend picking up a copy of the NYNJTC Map #120 - Kittatinny Trails Southern MT. MINSI 5 MILER ***For the Mt. Minis 5 Miler please use this link for the exact parking lot https://goo.gl/maps/nQiVjcVSkrbBxqds6 *** This 5 mile loop climbs the lesser known Mt Minsi which is directly across the Delaware River from Mt. Tammany. The loop has 1 100 ft of gain but is no where near as technical as Mt. Tammany. The elevation gain is also spread out more than Tammany so it is not as steep. From the parking lot you will follow the Appalachian Trail all the way to the summit of Mt. Minsi. The summit is just beyond the Mt. Minsi Fire road that you will take to get back down to the parking lot so you'll need to do a short out and back to hit the summit. Take the Mt. Minsi Fire Road all the way back down to the parking lot. We recommend picking up a copy of the NYNJTC Map #120 - Kittatinny Trails Southern TAMMANY/MINSI 12-ISH MILER The 12-ish Miler combines the Mt. Tammany loop with the Mt. Minsi loop by connecting the two via the Appalachian Trail. This loop as 2 500 ft of elevation gain. You'll park at the Dunnfield Creek Trailhead parking lot right off of I-80W. From the parking lot you will climb to the summit of Tammany on the Red-Dot trail. At the summit you will then follow the Blue-Dot trail back down to the bottom. When you reach the Dunnfield Waterfalls you'll turn left on the Appalachian Trail which will bring you back to the parking lot. From here you will stay on the Appalachian Trail to get over to Mt. Minsi. Follow the white blazes on the paved path that goes under I-80. This will bring you to the Kittatinny Visitor Center Parking lot. Continue following the AT along the foot path that parallels I-80 traveling over the Delaware River. You will cross the NJ/PA border! Stay on the AT all the way up to the summit of Mt. Minsi. To reach the summit you will have to do a short out and back just beyond the Mt. Minsi Fire Road that you will take to go back down the mountain. Take the Mt. Minsi Fire Road all the way back down to the parking lot where it rejoins the AT (how you came). Follow the AT back over the Delaware River through the Kittatiny Visitor Center lot and back under I-80 to get back to the Dunnfield Creek Trailhead. We recommend picking up a copy of the NYNJTC Map #120 - Kittatinny Trails Southern TAMMANY/MINSI/SUNFISH 19-ISH MILER This route combines all three courses to make a challenging day trip that has 3 000 ft of gain in 19 miles. You'll park at the Dunnfield Creek Trailhead parking lot right off of I-80W. From the parking lot you will climb to the summit of Tammany on the Red-Dot trail. At the summit you will follow the blue-dot trail 0.3 miles to the first split the blue-dot continues left to descend the mountain and the Mt. Tammany Fire Road continues straight. Follow the Mt. Tammany Fire Road for about 3 miles where you will hit the Turquoise Trail - turn left on the Turquoise Trail and follow it to the end where you will hit Sunfish Pond. Turn left on the Appalachian Trail. You will follow the AT all the way back to the Dunnfield Creek Trailhead parking lot where you started. Please consider donating by using the add-on feature during registration. The NYNJTC maintains and protects over 2 000 miles of trails in New York and New Jersey! FAQ's Q: I don't know which event I should sign up for! A: The question isn’t ‘What are we going to do?’ The question is ‘What aren’t we going to do?'” Q: What gear should I bring with me? A: GREAT question! Start by checking the weather. In addition to the appropriate clothing for the weather forecast we recommend bringing the following in your pack: water food. Again be sure to check the weather and trail conditions before you go it's possible that you may need spikes if there is snow/ice. Q: Wow - that's a ton of gear - I'm not planning on camping - do I really need to bring all of that stuff? A: Hey - better safe than sorry right? You mess with the bull you get the horns. The trails are rugged technical and have a ton of climbing - so it's going to take you longer than the same distance on an easier trail. Q: Be honest-- will I see Sasquatch when I'm out there on the trail? A: We can neither confirm nor deny that Sasquatch lives at the Delaware Water Gap..... Q: Tell me about the SWAG! A: We will mail everyone a handcrafted wood keepsake! If you'd like to purchase more Sassquad Gear we have a couple of add-on's in the Store link at the top of the registration page. Q: Ah! I forgot to donate to the NYNJTC! Can I still make a donation? A:Life Moves Pretty Fast. If You Don’t Stop And Look Around Once In A While You Could Miss It. Yes click the "STORE" link at the top of the page! SASSQUAD TRAIL RUNNERS We are a community of SASQUATCH-lovin' trail runners. Our goal is to provide FUN and challenging events. RunVenture Series: Delaware Water Gap
Jan 27
NY NJ Trail Conference
Mt. Tammany - Delaware Water Gap

Wednesday, January 27 All Day

We recommend picking up a copy of the NYNJTC Map #120 - Kittatinny Trails Southern NYNJTC We are supporting the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference with our RunVenture Series! Other winners will receive smaller amounts and the congregation will receive $50 000 which will be great for getting through the pandemic and its effects. The drawing will be held on January 31 2020. For more details and information on how to purchase tickets please click here: http://www.uuridgewood.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/5050Raffle_posterUPDATED.pdf

Squatchy Onesie Fest "5K-Marathon" Trail Race
Feb 6
NY NJ Trail Conference
Mahwah, NJ 07430

Saturday, February 6 at 10:00 am

NY NJ Trail Conference

WAVE STARTS UPDATE 1/19/21: We just received final confirmation for the race!! We have to limit the race to 25 total people (runners and volunteers) to stay within the current NJ outdoor gathering limitations. SO-- this means we will have several start times. The first wave is at 10AM and the second wave is at 11:30AM. The 10AM wave is FULL. The 11:30AM wave registration will open at 8PM on 1/18/21. Once that fills up we will open up another wave that will start at 1PM. SQUATCHY ONESIE FEST "You guys should put on an event where everyone has to wear a onesie." "That sounds like an AMAZING idea." "It should be in the dead of winter." "Done." And so the Squatchy Onesie Fest was born! Is it a ridiculous idea? You bet it is. Won't it be really cold in February? Yup that's why you need to wear a onesie. Do they even make onesies in my size? Of course they do #amazon Join us on Saturday February 6 2021 at the Ramapo Valley County Reservation for the first annual SQUATCHY ONESIE FEST 5K-MARATHON! Come sporting your favorite onesie and get ready to make some trail running/hiking memories that will last a lifetime. Now when your non-running friends ask "Hey how was your 5K marathon?" You won't have to correct them!! We are proudly partnering with the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference for this event and will be making a donation to the Conference after the trail party ends. RACE DETAILS This is a runner/hiker friendly event! We LOVE having families come to our events so make sure you register your kiddos to join in on the fun. 10AM Start Time - please check-in between 9:15am-9:45am 11:30AM Start Time - please check-in between 10:45am-11:15am Please allow a few minutes to walk from the Reservation park parking lot over to the NYNJTC Headquarters. Covid-19 Our squatchtastic "Dream Team Extreme" has been tirelessly working out all of the details to make this trail party safe fun and an all-around squatchy time. This means that we will be making some adjustments... Here are the details you need to know before you register for this trail party! - Waves are limited to 20 runners per start time. - We are accepting runners/hikers from any state that is NOT on the NJ Travel Advisory List. This list is updated often so please take a look at it before you register. Non-NJ Residents who are registered for our event need to make sure their state is not on the list the day that they travel to NJ. If you register for our race and your state is added to the list we will give you a 100% credit towards any 2021 event (again we will not offer refunds). https://covid19.nj.gov/faqs/nj-information/travel-and-transportation/which-states-are-on-the-travel-advisory-list-are-there-travel-restrictions-to-or-from-new-jersey - Although we do not anticipate this in the event that the county pulls the permit we will give all pre-registered runners/hikers a 100% credit to any 2021 Sassquad event. Please note this means that we are not offering refunds on the non-refundable registration fee. - Runners/hikers will use a mask during check-in at the start of the race and at the aid station. All runners will need to carry a mask/buff with them and should use them anytime you cannot stay 6 feet apart from other people. - Please wait until 5 minutes before the start-time to come towards the starting line. If you are more comfortable waiting a few minutes for other runners/hikers to leave you are more than welcome to start the race a few minutes late. COURSE DESCRIPTION This trail party starts and finishes at the NYNJTC Headquarters. When you get to the park please park in the PARK PARKING LOT. The small lot at Headquarters is reserved for NYNJTC staff only. There is a short path through the woods that connects the two lots. We will have check-in at the NYNJTC Headquarters so you can hang out there before and after the race. There are real restrooms in the building too (#winning). The "lollipop" course is 1.60 miles long. All runners and hikers will squatch the full course twice to complete the 5K. All runners/hikers need to come all the way back to Headquarters after the first loop so our timing system records your split. With the exception of the small trail that connects Headquarters to the park the entire lollipop course is a very wide gravel trail. The small trail that connects you to the park is a single track and is less than .20 mi long. The scenic loop goes all the way around Scarlet Oak Pond it is not technical and it is very flat (only 112 ft of gain)! Check out the Strava link here: https://www.strava.com/segments/22173482 NEW YORK-NEW JERSEY TRAIL CONFERENCE We are proud to partner with the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference! We will make a donation to the Trail Conference after the event using proceeds from the Onesie Fest as well as our trail party in March the Double Squatch. The New York-New Jersey Trail Conference is a volunteer-powered organization that builds maintains and protects public trails. Did you know that 400 000 volunteer hours over the past 5 years have gone into building and maintaining trails monitoring invasive species creating maps and guidebooks and more? Yeah that's pretty squatchtastic! Trail Conference members can receive 10% off of registration please email jennifer@nynjtc.org for the discount code! FAMILIES MILITARY VETERANS and NYNJTC MEMBERS We want the WHOLE family to come out to our events! We have a special discount code for families registering 3 or more Squatches in the same household. NYNJ Trail Conference members can receive 10% off of registration please email jennifer@nynjtc.org for the discount code! FAQs Q: Can I bring my dog? A: Sorry but Snoopy has to stay at home for this race. Our liability insurance does not cover dogs thank you for understanding! Q: Can I sign my kids up for the Onesie Fest? A: Yes! We want the WHOLE family to come out to our events! We have a special discount code for families registering 3 or more Squatches in the same household. Please email us (trailpartydirector@sassquadtrailrunning.com) before you register so we can give you the code! Once you have the code be sure to register your child separately and agree to the waiver for minors. And make sure to keep track of little Westley and Buttercup before during and after the race. We only have 1 search-party and they're already out there looking for Sasquatch. Q: What's the weather like in Mahwah NJ in February? A: I'll explain and I'll use small words so you'll be sure to understand you warthog faced buffoon. It will be cold. Probably. Maybe. It could be warm. Check the weather before the race and dress appropriately. Q: This will be my first trail race. What do I need to know? A: Inconceivable. Q: No really it is my first trail race! Any advice? A: You fell victim to one of the classic blunders—the most famous of which is “Never get involved in a land war in Asia”—but only slightly less well-known is this: “Never go against a Sicilian when death is on the line”! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Ha ha ha…........ But seriously we are SO EXCITED that you are choosing a Sassquad event for your first trail race! This is the perfect intro event as the trails are not very difficult. Come ready to have a great time and meet some awesome people! Q: What food will you have at the aid station? A: MLT – mutton lettuce and tomato sandwichs. And miracle pills. The chocolate coating makes it go down easier. But you have to wait fifteen minutes for full potency. And you shouldn’t go in swimming after for at least an hour. Q: Ummmm??? A: No miracle pills. But we will have water (please BYO-cup/bottle!!) pre-packaged single-servings snacks for after the race. Q: I could get lost in a brown paper bag. Will the course be marked? A: We will have bright colored ribbons along the course and plenty at all of the turns. Q: I don't want to run are there any volunteer opportunities? A: Yes! We always need Sassy Volunteers! Click the "Volunteer" button at the top of the page! Q: Are there restrooms at the start/finish area? A: There are no restrooms at the start/finish area but there are portapotty's on the race course before you reach the pond. SNEAKER FACTORY Thank you to our friends at Sneaker Factory NJ! Sneaker Factory supports Sassquad Trail Running on and off the trails to help make the events as squatchtastic as possible! Are you registered for a race that requires volunteer hours? We can sign-off on the hours that you log at the event! The college admissions process is undergoing significant and lasting changes as many colleges and universities have gone test optional for this current admissions cycle and will evaluate their standardized testing policies going forward. In this presentation will be led by Ron Feuchs and Jackie Tepper, partners at Stand Out For College, LLC, explore how students can engage with colleges virtually to help them develop a preliminary list of colleges to consider visiting when campuses are fully open. Discover how admissions officers are handling the current situation and how students can position themselves to develop a compelling narrative to increase their chances for admission. Learn about the importance of community service and how it can help a student to stand out from other applicants. Please RSVP to ron@standoutforcollege.com. You will receive a private invitation with a Zoom link in reply. There is no charge for this event.

Learn how charitable giving impacts our work + get expert advice on making the most of your financial giving. For more than a century, trails have provided an essential outlet for all who seek the healing powers of nature. The last year has underscored the essential role that trails play in supporting our mental and physical wellbeing. Discover how the Trail Conference has responded to unprecedented park visitation during the pandemic and the many transformative trail projects we completed in 2020. The love of trails, as expressed through philanthropy, plays a crucial role in these accomplishments and in the Trail Conference’s future. Financial support allows us to recruit, train, and support volunteers. It funds necessary project planning, permitting, and reporting to more than 75 different park partners. Learn more about the exciting new projects on the horizon and how philanthropy helps bring them to fruition. You will leave this webinar with a clearer understanding of where your money goes when you support the Trail Conference. The “why” behind every gift to the Trail Conference is just as unique as the person donating to our mission. How they choose to support our efforts can be just as personalized. If you’ve been wondering about your charitable giving options, longtime Trail Conference supporter David J. Haas, president and founder of Cereus Financial Advisors, LLC, will be offering insight on several ways to give, explaining the benefits of each method. ABOUT THE CO-HOST: David Haas CFP® is president and founder of Cereus Financial Advisors, LLC in Franklin Lakes, N.J., which specializes in comprehensive financial planning and wealth management for executives, professionals, and small business owners. He has been a Trail Conference member and volunteer for over 30 years.
