Substitute Single Squatch Trail Race
Mar 14
NY NJ Trail Conference
Mahwah, NJ 07430

Sunday, March 14 at 10:00 am

NY NJ Trail Conference

Storytime: traditionally we have our two-day Double Squatch trail party the second weekend in March at Stokes State Forest.... Unfortunately the NJ State Parks are not currently issuing permits for events so we are going with Plan B and hosting this new "substitute" single day event! Join us at the Ramapo Valley County Reservation in Mahwah NJ on Sunday March 14 2021 for the "Substitute Single Squatch"! Come squatch 5.5 miles or 11 miles with us! We are proudly supporting our friends at the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference with this event! As always our trail parties are open to runners and hikers of all ages and paces! RACE DETAILS In order to comply with the current NJ Executive Order for outdoor gathering limits we are doing four waves of 25 runners/hikers. Check out the various start times and check-in times below. All runners/hikers need to park in the main parking lot for the Ramapo Reservation and walk over to the NYNJTC Headquarters where the start/finish and check-in area is. Please allow a few minutes to walk from the parking lot to the Trail Conference Headquarters. After you finish the race please grab some snacks from the aid station and then head out to your cars so we can avoid any large group congregating at the finish line. 10am 11 miler: check-in between 9:30am-9:45am 10:30am 5.5 miler: check-in between 10:05am-10:20am 11am 11 miler: check-in between 10:35am-10:50am 11:30am 5.5 miler: check-in between 11:15am-11:20am **In the event that Governor Murphy increase the outdoor gathering limitations we will consolidate start times. We will communicate any changes with you via email and by updating this registration page. All runners/hikers will take home a handcrafted wood medal as well as a swag item from the Squatch Shop (choice of buff mug car magnet hat etc). The top 3 male and female runners will receive a handcrafted wood award from the Squatch Shop as well as some delicious baked goods from the shop of one of our club members Charlotte Aschoff "Good Eats By Char". COURSE DESCRIPTION The race will start/finish at the New York New Jersey Trail Conference Headquarters. All runners/hikers need to park at in the main parking lot for the Reservation and then walk over to HQ using the footpath. We will have a large flag at the start of the footpath so you know which way to go. The race course is a 5.5 mile loop. 5.5 milers will complete the loop once and 11 milers will complete the loop twice. The course has 900 feet of elevation gain - this is NOT a flat course! There is a 550 ft climb over from mile 1-1.9 - so be ready for that! You will be rewarded with some great views and the rest of the course has a few more rolling hills before descending back down. If there is still snow on the trail please come into the race expecting your mileage to be slower than usual. From the NYNJTC Headquarters follow the singletrack trail to the start of the Yellow Trail that will lead you over the foot bridge. Bear right to go halfway around Scarlet Oak Pond (this is the same way our Onesiefest 5K loop goes). When you get halfway around the pond you will turn right on the Yellow Trail. Here's where the fun begins - get ready for the biggest climb of the loop. You will climb about 550 feet between mile 1 and 1.9 (woo hoo!). Your hard work will be rewarded with some awesome views along the Yellow Trail specifically "Cactus Ledge" and "Ridge Overlook". You will stay on the Yellow Trail until you hit MacMillan Reservoir. At this junction turn right on the Pink Trail to go around the top of the Reservoir. Your next turn will be a right on the Red Trail. Follow the Red Trail until it ends at the opposite end of the Reservoir where you will make a right on the Blue Trail which then quickly joins the Yellow Trail. Turn right on the Yellow Trail and follow it all the way back to Scarlet Oak Pond and back over the footbridge returning to the singletrack that will take you back to the NYNJTC Headquarters. Check out the elevation profile in the picture gallery above. You can view the 5.5 mile loop on Strava using this link: https://www.strava.com/routes/2795024771194215612 HEALTH PRECAUTIONS Our squatchtastic "Dream Team Extreme" has been tirelessly working out all of the details to make this trail party safe fun and an all-around squatchy time. Here are the details you need to know before you register for this trail party! - Waves are limited to 25 runners per wave start time. - Although we do not anticipate this in the event that the county pulls the permit we will give all pre-registered runners/hikers a 100% credit to any 2021 Sassquad event. Please note this means that we are not offering refunds on the non-refundable registration fee. - Runners/hikers will use a mask during check-in at the start of the race and at the aid station. All runners will need to carry a mask/buff with them and should use them anytime you cannot stay 6 feet apart from other people. - Please come to the start/finish during your assigned check-in time (listed above). After the race ends and you gather your belongings and snacks from the aid station please head back to the main parking lot so we can avoid any large gatherings at our race headquarters. VIRTUAL OPTION If you are unable to travel to the event or would prefer not to participate in-person we have a virtual option for you! Get out to your favorite trail (or road treadmill backyard etc!) to complete the 5.5M or 11M! We will mail you the handcrafted wood medal shortly after you sign up for the event. NEW YORK-NEW JERSEY TRAIL CONFERENCE We are proud to partner with the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference! We will make a donation to the Trail Conference after the event. The New York-New Jersey Trail Conference is a volunteer-powered organization that builds maintains and protects public trails. Did you know that 400 000 volunteer hours over the past 5 years have gone into building and maintaining trails monitoring invasive species creating maps and guidebooks and more? Yeah that's pretty squatchtastic! Trail Conference members can receive 10% off of registration please email jennifer@nynjtc.org for the discount code! FAMILIES MILITARY VETERANS and NYNJTC MEMBERS We want the WHOLE family to come out to our events! We have a special discount code for families registering 3 or more Squatches in the same household. A: Sorry but Chester has to stay at home for this race. Our liability insurance does not cover dogs at our events thank you for understanding! Q: Can I sign my kids up for this trail party? A: Yes! We want the WHOLE family to come out to our events! We have a special discount code for families registering 3 or more Squatches in the same household. Please email us (trailpartydirector@sassquadtrailrunning.com) before you register so we can give you the code! Once you have the code be sure to register your child separately and agree to the waiver for minors. And make sure to keep track of Dustin Mike Will and Lucas before during and after the race. We only have 1 search-party and they're already out there looking for Sasquatch. Q: What's the weather like in Mahwah NJ in March? A: Friends don’t lie... It will likely be cold. High probability for snow on the trails. Probably. Maybe. It could be warm. Check the weather before the race and dress appropriately. Q: This will be my first trail race. What do I need to know? A: Mornings are for coffee and contemplation. Q: No really it is my first trail race! Any advice? A: Seriously we are SO EXCITED that you are choosing a Sassquad event for your first trail race! The particular trail loop has some elevation - there is about 900 ft of gain over the course of 5.5 miles. Come ready to have a great time and meet some awesome people! But also be ready to go slower than you normally would on a flat 5.5M run/hike. Take your time on the climb and enjoy the views at the top! Q: What food will you have at the aid station? A: Eggo Waffles New Coke Cherry Slurpees corn dogs and Scoops Ahoy ice cream. Q: Ummmm??? A: Ugh we wish we could provide all of those foods... Instead we will have water (please BYO-cup/bottle!!) pre-packaged single-servings snacks. Q: I could get lost in a brown paper bag. Will the course be marked? A: We will have bright colored pink ribbons along the course and plenty at all of the turns along with large red directional arrows.. Q: I don't want to run are there any volunteer opportunities? A: Yes! We always need Sassy Volunteers! Please email us at trailpartydirector@sassquadtrailrunning.com if you would like to volunteer! Q: Are there restrooms at the start/finish area? A: There is one portajohn at the start/finish and then 3 more along the very beginning of the course right before you go over the footbridge. BE A HERO Join the Sassy Volunteer Squad! We need help with check-in sweeping the course and cleaning up. Are you registered for a race that requires volunteer hours? We can sign-off on the hours that you log at the event! Volunteer to provide delicious food for the runners and we can sign-off on your prep time! We love our volunteer team and we are always looking to add more sassy members to the Volunteer Squad! Email us at trailpartydirector@sassquadtrailrunning.com if you'd like to volunteer! SNEAKER FACTORY Thank you to our friends at Sneaker Factory NJ! Wake Up + Move With MovNat Webinar

Saturday, March 20 from 9:00 am to 9:45 am

NY NJ Trail Conference

Before you head out for your favorite hike - we want to help put your best foot forward with the fitness industry's newest crave with a ground movement workout! Ground movement: Ignored by most over the age of five find out why a cohesive practice of small ground movements is the next big thing in the fitness industry. You can do these wherever you have some space on the ground. And if you practice them often they’ll improve not only your ability to sit and move on the ground but also your mobility flexibility and strength as well. Ground mobility is so much more than just “mobility drills” or anyone movement pattern – and today I’m going to teach you all about it. We take these movements for granted only to realize how much trouble they give us when we really pay attention to our ability to perform a wide variety of such ground movements not just effectively but efficiently. The awesome thing is you don’t need to be James Bond to perform at a high level in a wide variety of life situations from every day to more adventurous (or life-threatening) tasks. You just need to understand its greater practical importance and how to build your skillset through consistent practice. About our instructor: Dr. Phil Lombardo has extensive experience in the care of both sports injuries and general musculoskeletal injuries for patients of all ages. In 2007 Phil joined the top one percent of the Doctor of Physical Therapy in the country by becoming an APTA Board Certified Specialist in Sports (SCS). Dr. Lombardo has distinguished himself as a provider of choice in Sports Medicine and is recognized by the National Federation of State High School Association as a Certified Coach specializing in Track and Field (NFHS). His expert knowledge as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) a Sports Performance Enhancement Specialist (PES) and a Certified Corrective Exercise Specialist (CES) guarantee his patients the highest quality of care. It brings Phil great joy as he shares MovNat a physical education system for developing real-world capability through natural movement with his patients and now to the public. His journey led him to become a MovNat certified instructor hosting the first-ever MovNat Elements Workshop in NJ and then becoming the first-ever licensed MovNat facility in NJ. Dr.Lombardo was on the Div III track team at NYU and completed the Mountain Madness grueling 25K in 2017.

GSBC 2021 Seminar ($25–$35) Intermediate DNA: A Four-Lecture Program with Blaine Bettinger Ph.D. J.D. The Genetic Genealogist® Saturday 20 March 2021 9:30 am–4:00 pm US Eastern Online Seminar! —— Please join the Genealogical Society of Bergen County (GSBC) as we welcome Blaine Bettinger Ph.D. J.D. The Genetic Genealogist® for a day of intermediate DNA sessions! On Saturday 20 March 2021 Blaine Bettinger will present the following four live sessions and end with a Q& A period. Session 1: Using Y-DNA and mtDNA to Explore Your Ancestry Y-DNA and mtDNA testing have helped genealogists break through thousands of stubborn brick walls. Learn about the unique inheritance of Y-DNA and mtDNA in your family how these tests can be used to explore your ancient ancestry and how the results can identify your relatives both close and distant. Session 2: Using Autosomal DNA for 18th and 19th Century Mysteries Even though our 18th and 19th century ancestors have been dead for decades their DNA still survives in their descendants. Learn how to use autosomal DNA to attack and potentially solve genealogical mysteries and brick walls for ancestors who were born or lived in the 1800s 1700s and beyond. Session 3: Using DNA Painter to Map and Analyze Your Autosomal DNA DNA Painter is an easy-to-use third-party tool that enables you to assign segments of DNA shared with cousins to a map of your chromosomes. Together we’ll look at this powerful new tool and how you can use it in your research. Session 4: Evaluating a Genealogical Conclusion Including DNA Someone tells you that they’ve proven their connection to a genealogical ancestor using DNA but have they really proven it? Did they avoid the known pitfalls? Together we will discuss the most common pitfalls when using DNA evidence and propose the minimum requirements for a genealogical proof comprising DNA. There are a limited number of “seats” for this event. By presenter’s request this event will NOT be recorded. ——— Blaine T. Bettinger Ph.D. J.D. has been using traditional genealogical research to learn more about his ancestry for nearly 20 years.
