Kimmel Center Presents: An Evening With Bruce Hornsby and yMusic
Mar 4
Kimmel Center for Performing Arts
Philadelphia, PA 19120

Wednesday, March 4 from 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm

Kimmel Center for Performing Arts

Three-time Grammy® winner Bruce Hornsby has built one of the most diverse, collaborative, and adventurous careers in contemporary music. He has returned to traditional American roots forms, collaborating with Ricky Skaggs. He has played with the Grateful Dead. He has fused the plunk and dazzle of 20th century modernist classical composition to singer-songwriter emotional inquiries. He has scored films for Spike Lee and performed with symphony orchestras. Hornsby describes Absolute Zero, his new album, as “a compendium of what I like and moves me.” Don’t expect, perhaps, a thing or two new, but prepare for a multifaceted ride. Hornsby’s songs, both in spirit and memory, function collectively as an homage to fiction writing that, while often poetic, takes no prisoners. His performance will offer a glimpse of a restless spirit who continues to push forward into exciting new musical terrain. yMusic, "six contemporary classical polymaths who playfully overstep the boundaries of musical genres,” (The New Yorker) performs in concert halls, arenas and clubs around the world. Founded in New York City in 2008, yMusic believes in presenting excellent, emotionally communicative music, regardless of style or idiom. Their virtuosic execution and unique configuration (string trio, flute, clarinet, and trumpet) has attracted the attention of high profile collaborators—from Paul Simon to Bill T. Jones to Ben Folds—and inspired original works by some of today’s foremost composers, including Nico Muhly, Missy Mazzoli and Andrew Norman.

Kimmel Center Presents: Lewis Black: It Gets Better Every Day
Mar 6
Kimmel Center for Performing Arts
Philadelphia, PA 19120

Friday, March 6 from 8:00 pm to 11:00 pm

Kimmel Center for Performing Arts

Lewis Black Grammy Award-winning stand-up comedian is one of the most prolific and popular performers working today. He executes a brilliant trifecta as a stand-up comedian actor and author. Receiving critical acclaim he performs more than 200 nights annually to sold-out audiences throughout Europe New Zealand Canada and the United States. He is one of a few performers to sell out multiple renowned theaters including Carnegie Hall Lincoln Center Brooks Atkinson Theatre New York City Center the Main Stage at the Mirage in Las Vegas and most recently a sold-out Broadway run at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in New York City. His live performances provide a cathartic release of anger and disillusionment for his audience. He is a passionate performer who is a more pissed-off optimist than a mean-spirited curmudgeon. Lewis is the rare comic who can cause an audience to laugh themselves into incontinence while making compelling points about the absurdity of our world. Lewis Black came into national prominence with his appearances on The Daily Show in 1996. Those appearances on The Daily Show led to comedy specials on HBO Comedy Central Showtime and Epix. In 2001 he won Best Male Stand-Up at the American Comedy Awards. He has released eight comedy albums including the 2007 GRAMMY Award-winning "The Carnegie Hall Performance". He won his second GRAMMY Award for his album "Stark Raving Black" and has published three bestselling books: Nothing's Sacred (Simon & Schuster 2005) Me of Little Faith (Riverhead Books 2008) and I'm Dreaming of a Black Christmas (Riverhead Books 2010).

Sittin’ In introduces audiences to new cutting-edge artists. It defies genre often drawing from everything from straight-ahead jazz to freestyle hip hop and all points in between. There’s an unpredictability to the night which we enthusiastically embrace! Sometimes you’ll experience a finely tuned set and sometimes you can catch a totally improvised show by seven people who have never played together. The awesome creativity excitement and quality always shine through in The Kimmel Center’s informal club-like setting featuring early warm-up sets by some of the hottest DJs around. And it’s free! About Sara Serpa & André Matos Magic intensely dazzling and moving are some of the words that can describe the combination of the voice and guitar of Sara Serpa and André Matos. Working together since 2005 the Portuguese native and New York based artists have achieved to create a unique sonic world drawing upon pure and contemplative sounds through a personal approach to melody and poetry.
