In honor of Black History Month, the Livingston Public Library is presenting an illustrated virtual art talk by art lecturer Suzanne Altman on some well known African American artists. Some of the artists included are Jacob Lawrence, Augusta Savage, Faith Ringold, Betye Saar, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and many more.Their works often comment on the history of people of color and other marginalized groups in American society. Altman will highlight works such as Jacob Lawrence’s Great Migration series, Faith Ringolds colorful quilts, and Kara Walker’s powerful sihouettes depicting brutal scenes of slavery.Suzanne Altman is an art educator and art historian who has presented art and art history programs in various venues to adult and teenage audiences. She is also a painter who works out of her studio and art school in Ossining, NY and exhibits frequently.Registered attendees will receive information on how to connect to the Zoom chat room the day before the event. This program is made possible by The Friends of the Livingston Public Library.

VIRTUAL The President is Dead! The Deaths & Remembrances of the American Presidents
Feb 8
Livingston Public Library
Livingston Public Library

Monday, February 8 from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm

Livingston Public Library

The Presidents of the United States of America have been written about by many historians, but only Louis Picone has focused on the unique perspective of their deaths and public remembrances from George Washington’s modest funeral at Mount Vernon in 1799 to the massive multi-day state funeral event of George H.W. Bush in 2018. In this virtual presentation, Louis will discuss how he developed his interest in the topic and will share stories from his book The President Is Dead!: The Extraordinary Stories of Presidential Deaths, Final Days, Burials, and Beyond… such as the tragic death of James Garfield in Long Branch, New Jersey, the 20-day funeral pageant after Abraham Lincoln was assassinated, and a bizarre story about the missing brain of John F. Kennedy. Louis is also the author of Where the Presidents Were Born: The History & Preservation of the Presidential Birthplaces. He teaches American history at William Paterson University in Wayne, New Jersey. Registered attendees will receive information via email on how to connect to the Zoom chat room the day before the event. This program is made possible by the support of The Friends of the Livingston Public Library

VIRTUAL Let's Talk About Books: Saints for All Occasions by J. Courtney Sullivan
Feb 12
Livingston Public Library
Livingston Public Library

Friday, February 12 from 12:45 pm to 2:00 pm

Livingston Public Library

The next virtual meeting of Let’s Talk About Books, a monthly book discussion group at the Livingston Library, will be on February 12, 2021 to discuss “Saints for All Occasions" by J. Courtney Sullivan."From the bestselling author of The Only Woman in the Room comes a mesmerizing tale of historical fiction-- A sweeping, unforgettable novel fromThe New York Times best-selling author of Maine, about the hope, sacrifice, and love between two sisters and the secret that drives them apart. Nora and Theresa Flynn are twenty-one and seventeen when they leave their small village in Ireland and journey to America. Nora is the responsible sister; she's shy and serious and engaged to a man she isn't sure that she loves. Theresa is gregarious; she is thrilled by their new life in Boston and besotted with the fashionable dresses and dance halls on Dudley Street. But when Theresa ends up pregnant, Nora is forced to come up with a plan--a decision with repercussions they are both far too young to understand. Fifty years later, Nora is the matriarch of a big Catholic family with four grown children: John, a successful, if opportunistic, political consultant; Bridget, privately preparing to have a baby with her girlfriend; Brian, at loose ends after a failed baseball career; and Patrick, Nora's favorite, the beautiful boy who gives her no end of heartache. Estranged from her sister and cut off from the world, Theresa is a cloistered nun, living in an abbey in rural Vermont. Until, after decades of silence, a sudden death forces Nora and Theresa to confront the choices they made so long ago. -- Provided by publisher." Linda Schultz is the presenter. The one-hour discussion will begin at 12:45 PM online. The meeting is free and open to everyone interested, whether they have read the book or not. Participants must register in order to receive the link to the program one day ahead of time.
