Amber Hawk Swanson in "Hard Return: 9 Experiments for this Moment" from
Purchase College Community Events
Neuberger Museum of Art
(map)
About The Harmony Show Created during the early days of the pandemic as a web-based mode of artistic production foregrounding intellectual inquiry and community-building, The Harmony Show explores issues of personhood, desire, race, queerness, disability, and community in two modalities. The first format is a seminar in which an invited scholar presents on their work and discusses it with the program's co-hosts. The second is a cooking show, where a discussion about the same types of issues unfolds as the guest and hosts prepare a meal designed by a recipe developer who specializes in food's healing properties. As a program designed for an online environment, filming in-gallery with a live audience presents new opportunities for considering public engagement and imagining the community created by the show's dissemination. More about The Harmony Show at the Neuberger Museum of Art (.pdf) The five-day performance schedule includes: Wednesday March 29 3:00-4:30pm Cooking Show withXiomara SebastiánCastron Niculescu 5:00-6:00pm Artist Talk with Amber Hawk Swanson Thursday, March 30 1:00-2:30pm Seminar Episode with Leslie Bow Friday, March 31 2:30-4:00pm Seminar Episode with Shaka McGlotten Saturday, April 1 2:30-4:00pm Cooking Show with Shaka McGlotten Sunday, April 2 2:30-4:00pm Seminar Episode with Jillian Hernandez A note about the performance schedule The artworks in Hard Return require performers to exert themselves for long periods of time. If you arrive and find they are not present, it means they are taking a short break and will be back soon. In the meantime, feel free to enter the gallery and look around or explore the other exhibitions on view. Thanks for your patience and understanding. Over the course of nine weeks from February through May, Hard Return: 9 Experiments for this Moment will transform the Neuberger Museum of Art into a site of collaboration, investigation, and performance art. Nine artists have been commissioned to create diverse, participatory, durational week-long projects that experiment with a sense of being alive in this moment while probing the influence of history on the present, proposing different ways of shaping and understanding community. Hard Return: 9 Experiments for this Moment is organized by the Neuberger Museum of Art, Purchase College, SUNY, and co-curated by Purchase College faculty members Kate Gilmore, a renowned performance artist, and Jonah Westerman, an art historian who specializes in performance art. Generous financial support for this exhibition has been provided by the National Endowment for the Arts, the Friends of the Neuberger Museum of Art, and the Purchase College Foundation. Additional support of the student participation in Hard Return has been provided by Ivan Bart & Grant Greenberg and Ava & Paul Zukowsky.

Lecture by Amber Hawk Swanson from
Purchase College Community Events
Neuberger Museum of Art
(map)
As a performance artist, Amber Hawk Swanson's work has explored care, animacy, and desire in the context of queerness and disability. Her complementary scholarly interests focus on investigations of enabling objects and actions; technologized, roboticized, and transpeciated bodies and selves; animacy and animal intimacy; and worldmaking in the online forums and livestream channels that have served as the primary platforms of her work. Hawk Swanson's practice has embodied these concerns through a material and conceptual engagement with captive marine mammals, silicone Dolls, and networks of care among the community of silicone Doll-loving men known as iDollators. Recently, she has begun exploring sites of belonging and protection that simultaneously function as spaces of violent exclusion, and, along with her collaborators, Synthetiks advocate Davecat and his robotocized silicone spouse Sidore, she examines how sexual racism functions in the Doll community. Hawk Swanson has created performances for non-art venues such as a Doll community meet-up, an anonymous Doll community member's garage, and a carousel horse carving school. She has also created livestreamed and recorded performances in residency studios at Watermill, Yaddo, MacDowell, Skowhegan, Bemis, LMCC, and Sharpe-Walentas. Scholarly writing on Hawk Swanson's work has been published in GLQ: A Journal of Lesbian & Gay Studies (2012, 2015), Theatre Drama Review (2012), and Art and Architecture in the Americas (2016). Her collaborations and performances are also featured in Amber Jamilla Musser's Sensual Excess: Queer Femininity and Brown Jouissance (New York University Press, 2018) and Cris Beam's I Feel You: The Surprising Power of Extreme Empathy (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2018). Hawk Swanson has collaborated with artist Xandra Ibarra (2013), artist Jordan Lord (2015), filmmaker Renato Velarde (2011–18), Synthetiks advocate Davecat (2007–present), and the iDollator community (2005–present). Amber Hawk Swanson received an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and was a recipient of a Rema Hort Mann Foundation Artist Community Engagement Grant and a Franklin Furnace Fund Grant. She teaches in the sculpture department of Rhode Island School of Design (Providence, RI) and recently taught in the sculpture departments of Virginia Commonwealth University (Richmond, VA), Maryland Institute College of Art (Baltimore, MD), and Purchase College, SUNY (Purchase, NY). Hawk Swanson was live on air as an Assistant Host/Producer on Chicago Public Radio's Vocalo (2007–08), and was a registered carousel operator in the state of New York (2014–18).

Purchase College Community Events
Humanities Lecture Hall
(map)
Ryan Kuo lives and works in New York City. His works are process-based and diagrammatic and often invoke a person or people arguing. This is not to state an argument about a thing, but to be caught in a state of argument. He has used videogame engines, chatbots, web and graphic design, productivity software, and writing to produce circuitous and unresolved movements in which objects are lost and found in white escape routes. His recent and upcoming projects include a memory engine presented as a self-playing biographical RPG, a hateful little thing whose body fills up white space out of both resentment and necessity; a computer terminal that enforces the Ninth Amendment of the Bill of Rights; an experimental comic book about farming automation, in collaboration with Most Ancient; and an artist's book about aspirational workflows, File: A User's Manual, modeled after software guides for power users.

Exploring the Female Voice Lecture 4 is a continuation of Lecture 3. It provides more in- depth discussion of Sufism and its evolution over the centuries with its merger with Islam. Dr. Abbas, thorough video performances at the Sufi shrines in Pakistan and India traces the elitist forms of Sufi repertoire in Persian and Arabic. Such performances were confined only to those initiated in the esoteric practices of Sufi ritual. ISama of spiritual context, as it is called, was confined to only male musicians and male audiences with no female performers or audiences. Dr. Abbas then takes her audience to the marketplace of other Sufi shrines where both women and men are performers and audiences. And, it is here that the majority of illiterate audiences learn to recite Sufi poetry from sheer memory. They are groomed in the oral culture through text and music. The remaining lectures are as follows: Thursday, April 13 at 5 p.m. "Beyond the Stars": Sufi Music in Exile An international performance Thursday, April 27 at 5 p.m. "The Last Letter" and "The Wedding Guest" Episodes from a memoir Professor Abbas is the author of Pakistan's Blasphemy Laws: from Islamic Empires to the Taliban (University of Texas Press, 2013) and The Female Voice in Sufi Ritual: Devotional Practices of Pakistan and India, (University of Texas Press, 2002 ;Oxford University Press, 2003). THEATRE PRODUCTION - CABARET from
Iona College Council on the Arts
The Christopher J. Murphy Auditorium
(map)
Organization: STUDENT LIFE Event Locator: 2022-AAGRRX The Iona Players return with a production of “Cabaret” for their spring musical, taking the stage on March 31 and April 1, 2023. This production is sure to excite and dare viewers to examine human nature and the culture surrounding them. OVERVIEW Cabaret is a musical that takes place in the Kit Kat Klub, a cabaret in Berlin amidst the backdrop of the Nazi Party’s steady rise to power. The play contains antisemitism and Nazi imagery. Set against the tumult and sheer chaos of Germany’s 1929 Berlin, the alluring emcee invites all to engage in willful ignorance and revel in the lustful delights inside the legendary Kit Kat Club. “Here…life is beautiful.” With hedonistic abandon, these riveting characters live life as a carnival of debauchery and despair. Winning Tony Awards for Best Musical for the 1966 Broadway premiere and for Best Revival of a Musical in 1998, this provocative and challenging style of storytelling packs a potent punch on the dangers of mass indifference in the face of injustice and atrocities and asks audiences to either act now or say “so what?” DETAILS Murphy Auditorium, Iona University March 31 @ 7 p.m., and April 1 @ 2 p.m. & 7 p.m. TICKETS – General Admission: $10 Iona University Students, Faculty, and Staff are able to access one (1) complimentary ticket for one of the shows additional tickets will be available at the door for 45 minutes before showtime. Emily Coates in "Hard Return: 9 Experiments for this Moment" from
Purchase College Community Events
Neuberger Museum of Art
(map)
About the performance The video, dance, and dialogic elements in this work stem from Coates' research into the long human history of cosmic dances across time and multiple geographies. Exploring attempts to reckon the cosmos in human scale and through the orchestration of human movement and collaboration, the work will feature Purchase College students. Coates will also offer movement workshops related to the themes of the piece to museum visitors. A note about the performance schedule The artworks in Hard Return require performers to exert themselves for long periods of time.
