Mary Tooley Parker will present at the Edward Williams Gallery on Fairleigh Dickinson University’s Metropolitan Campus from January 13 through February 28 2020. The Gallery is located in FDU’s Edward Williams Hall 150 Kotte Place Hackensack N.J. Gallery hours are Monday to Friday 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. and Saturday 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. There is no admission charge. About the Artist: Parker’s artwork focuses on realistic interpretations of people and nature whether from memories local history or visual images. Incorporated in her work are new and recycled wool cotton and silk fabric fleece handspun and mill spun yarn silk fiber metallic fibers and more. She uses natural and synthetic dyes to create colors. Textile art is received by the viewer in a different way than fine art and there is science showing that a different part of the brain is stimulated when viewing a textile. It appeals to the senses especially touch and gives a feeling of warmth. Working in the simple medium of rug hooking affords Parker a strong connection not only to the fibers running through her fingertips but also to the women who used this medium and other fiber mediums to express themselves during difficult time with limited materials.

In a classic good-triumphs-over-evil plot, the spunky youngsters defeat the witch, free other children she had baked into gingerbread, and are reunited with their loving parents in the happily-ever-after finale. The ballet incorporates the beautiful music of Engelbert Humperdinck, including his “Fourteen Angels” bedtime prayer and features New Jersey Ballet’s original “storyteller” narration so even the littlest theatergoer can keep up with ease.

Spend an afternoon with the multi-talented and creative choreographer Carolyn Dorfman talking about "dance with a capital D"... Through a multi-media presentation and interactive dialogue, learn about how she built Carolyn Dorfman Dance into New Jersey’s premier modern dance company. She will share how she and her dynamic, multi-ethnic company affect individual and collective social change through choreography, performance and community engagement. You will gain insight about her creative process, her artistic philosophy that shows the power of Dance to transform lives and uplift individuals and communities. Sponsored by the National Society of Arts and Letters. About Carolyn Dorfman: Carolyn is known as a creator of evocative dances that reflect her concerns about the human condition. She is interested in creating “worlds” into which the audience can enter. Hailed as the consummate storyteller, Dorfman, a child of Holocaust survivors, has also created a celebrated body of work that honors her Jewish legacy; its trials and triumphs, its treasured uniqueness and, most importantly, its universal connections. Her interdisciplinary and intercultural approach on the stage and in the community explores the rich tapestry of human experience, tradition and stories. Celebrating its 37th season in 2019-2020, Carolyn Dorfman Dance connects life and dance in bold, athletic, and dramatic works by Carolyn Dorfman and nationally renowned choreographers and in collaboration with extraordinary composers, musicians, actors, storytellers, visual artists and costume, set and video designers. The company’s ten multi-ethnic and stunning dancers tap their unique talents, both in performance and in its interactions with audiences, students and the community, to present high-energy, technically demanding, and highly acclaimed works that take audiences on intellectual and emotional journeys that ultimately illuminate and celebrate the human story. This is contemporary dance that moves you to think, feel, laugh, cry and engage.A Michigan native, Dorfman received her BFA in Dance with K-12 teaching certification from the University of Michigan and her MFA from New York University Tisch School for the Arts. Pronounced “chee-gong”, Qigong is a traditional Chinese mindful exercise system for cultivating and strengthening the body’s vital energy. Also known as “Chinese Yoga,” Qigong consists of a series of slow-flowing movements, which gently stretch muscles, tendons and ligaments. Similar to Tai Chi, these low-impact exercises heighten awareness of the mind-body-breath connection. Meditation and visualization are also a part of Qigong practice. Using the mind, the practitioner gathers, guides and circulates internal energy with graceful and precise movements. Qigong can be practiced by all age groups and can easily be adapted for the physically challenged. Join us for weekly classes by local resident Bianca Godoy. For all abilities. Everyone is welcome, no previous experience or registration required. Our instructor: Bianca Godoy holds certifications to teach Qigong from the Supreme Science Qigong Center, the Chinese Health Qigong Association and the Institute of Integral Qigong and Tai Chi. A Morristown resident, Bianca has been practicing and teaching Qigong, Yoga and Tai Chi for over 20 years.

From three-time Tony® winner and Hamilton choreographer Andy Blankenbuehler comes a poignant and inspiring new American musical that explodes with infectious music and high-octane, heart-stopping dancing. It’s 1945. As America’s soldiers come home to ticker-tape parades and overjoyed families, Private First Class Donny Novitski, singer and songwriter, struggles to rebuild the life he left behind. When NBC announces a national competition to find the nation’s next great musical superstars, Donny sees a lifeline for himself and some fellow veterans that gives them the purpose they so desperately need. Together, they form a band unlike any the nation has ever seen. Along the way, they discover the power of music to face the impossible, find their voice, and finally feel like they have a place to call home.
