JCC Metro West

Harriet & Jerry Ritzer Memorial Lecture: Brad Aronson, Human KindThis national bestseller is filled with inspiring real-life stories about how one small deed can make a world of difference. Moved by the many demonstrations of “human kindness” that supported Brad Aronson’s family through his wife’s treatment for and recovery from leukemia, he writes of the people who rescued his family from that dark time, often with the smallest of gestures. But that’s only the beginning. Knowing that simple acts of kindness transform lives across the globe every day, he sought out these stories and shares the best ones here. In HumanKind, you’ll meet the mentor who changed a child’s life with a single lesson in shoe tying, the six-year-old who launched a global kindness movement, and many other heroes. Brad also provides dozens of ways to make a difference through the simplest words and deeds, showing how each of us has the power to change someone’s world as well as our own. HumanKind will touch your heart and remind you of what really matters. REGISTER FOR EVENTPURCHASE BOOK

Fright Night with Middle Grade Author M. D. Payne
Oct 28
Livingston Public Library
Livingston - Program Room, Livingston Public Library

Thursday, October 28 from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm

Livingston Public Library

Children's book author M.D. Payne will give a multimedia author presentation that covers how he got his start and how he wrote his books. He'll engage with kids using silly voices, photos from his childhood, and a fun video or two. He'll include writing tips (Tip #1—Write What You Love!) and explore the difference between writing fiction and non-fiction, ending with a Q&A.Perfect for Middle Grade readers. M. D. Payne was born in 1978 in New Hampshire to an Air Force Family and grew up in 11 different homes in Maine, California, Idaho, Florida, Virginia, Ohio, and Germany. As a child, he was a ravenous reader. While in elementary school, his favorite past-time was creating cut-and-paste scrapbooks of presidential facts that remain in his mother's possession today. M. D. has been a fan of Halloween and horror into adulthood, so he jumped at the chance to write marketing and creative copy for the famed GOOSEBUMPS series in 2007, and was soon pulled into the world of kidlit. He wrote his first books, the gross-out horror series MONSTER JUICE, from 2012–2014, and then became involved in the NY Times bestselling WHO WAS series, tackling spooky titles like Who Is R. L. Stine? and What is the Story of Scooby-Doo? along with Who Was Duke Ellington? His tenth and latest book is Frankenstein: Your Classics. Your Choices. In this choose-your-own-adventure-style book, readers get to choose new paths and meet new characters in Mary Shelley's classic Frankenstein.A fan of kids, reading, and especially kids who read, M. D. gives presentations on reading and writing to children and parents alike at numerous schools around the country, and around the world via Skype. He lives in New Jersey with his wife and two daughters. This program is made possible by the Friends of the Livingston Library.

VIRTUAL Tempestuous Beauty: How Artists Throughout The Ages Were Inspired By Flowers and Gardens
Nov 1
Livingston Public Library
Livingston Public Library

Monday, November 1 from 7:00 pm to 8:15 pm

Livingston Public Library

Artists have long been drawn to the natural world to stimulate their creativity. The rich symbolism, diverse color palettes, and delicate, changing nature of flowers have been a source of inspiration across cultures for centuries. In this virtual talk presented by art lecturer Janet Mandel, you will be introduced to an array of astonishing images from throughout art history, some iconic and some unfamiliar, reminding us why flowers and gardens give us hope, nourish our souls, and elicit pleasure and happiness.Janet is now retired after teaching for 32 years in NJ’s public schools, the last eighteen of which were at Columbia High School in Maplewood, where she taught English, art history, and world languages and cultures. She has been presenting illustrated lectures on a variety of art history topics at museums, adult schools, libraries, senior centers, and similar venues.Registration is required and the zoom link will be emailed the day before the event. The event is made possible with the support of The Friends of the Livingston Public Library.

Curator, Museum of History and Holocaust Education, Kennesaw State UniversityZoom Author Talk and Q & ALucy Adlington is an author, presenter, and keen collector of vintage & antique costume. She writes both history-inspired fiction and fascinating social history books. She lives on a working farm in the north of England, with a patient farmer and a cat the size of a small armchair. At the height of the Holocaust twenty-five young inmates of the infamous Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp—mainly Jewish women and girls—were selected to design, cut, and sew beautiful fashions for elite Nazi women in a dedicated salon. It was work that they hoped would spare them from the gas chambers. This fashion workshop—called the Upper Tailoring Studio—was established by Hedwig Höss, the camp commandant’s wife, and patronized by the wives of SS guards and officers. Here, the dressmakers produced high-quality garments for SS social functions in Auschwitz, and for ladies from Nazi Berlin’s upper crust. Senior Happening: Lecture-in-Song “The Golden Age of Operetta"
Nov 19
Livingston Public Library
Livingston - Program Room

Friday, November 19 from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm

Livingston Public Library

America’s cultural roots lie deeply in European soil, and this most definitely includes the glories of American Popular Song in its twentieth century heyday. Before Gershwin, Porter, Berlin, Kern, Rodgers, Hammerstein & Co., there was European Operetta filling the theatres of all the great continental capitals. From Vienna, the Strausses and Lehar; from Paris, Offenbach; from London, Gilbert & Sullivan: exotic locales, derring-do drama, gorgeously lush melodies, romance, sentiment & color at fever pitch. The Senior Happening is a monthly series that allows attendees (“Seniors” or otherwise) to socialize during the first part of the program (12 until 12:45 pm) by bringing a bag lunch. The program and entertainment then begins at 1 pm.Registration is required for Senior Happening. Livingston residents will be given first preference to register, beginning on October 25th.If seats are available, guests from other Essex County towns may register starting on November 15th.Senior Happening is made possible in part by funds from the Essex County Division of Cultural Affairs, a partner of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts and through the support from the Friends of the Livingston Library.
