Sheldrake Backyard Bioblitz 2020 - FREE
Sheldrake Environmental Center
Anywhere in Westchester County

Sunday, July 12 through July 18

Sheldrake Environmental Center

Join Sheldrake for our first-ever Backyard Bioblitz, a week-long citizen-science project, where you (and your family) are the scientists gathering data. Bioblitzes aim to find, identify, and record as many species as possible throughout the plant, fungus, and animal kingdoms over a short period of time, getting an accurate snapshot of an area’s overall biodiversity. A bioblitz allows scientists, naturalists, families, students, teachers, scout troops, and other community members to work together. We’re especially excited to inaugurate our backyard bioblitz this year, as it allows us to enjoy and reinforce our connectivity to nature in a safe and socially distanced format. Sheldrake’s bioblitz will take place during the week of July 12-18 in your backyard or neighborhood! Participation is open to anyone in Westchester County. Luiza Cardenuto Virtual Studio Visit
Jul 16
Pelham Art Center
155 Fifth Avenue, Pelham, NY 10803

Thursday, July 16 from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm

Pelham Art Center

Join Pelham Art Center for a virtual studio visit with Luiza Cardenuto Luiza Cardenuto, who exhibits her work under the name Nūtō, is a visual artist working in printmaking, sculpture and interactive installations. Her primary source of inspiration lies in the contrast between the natural and urban environment. She examines how humans interact with plants and animals by drawing from the various ways in which they present them in cities and in the media. Taking pictures when visiting parks, zoos and botanical gardens, as well as finding images in magazines and social media, she creates large-scale linoleum block prints that are collaged onto wood panels and onto city walls. The wood panels become imaginary environments contained within the frame. Sometimes the panels become sculptures or take the shape of an immersive installation where the viewer interacts with the elements. In doing so, the viewer is placed in a position of contemplation. Much like looking at a vast landscape, this sense of wonder and awe is something Luiza is constantly striving for in her daily life. Art making is a mysterious act of reflection and however momentarily, each piece carries in it, an ecosystem of the mind. Please note: Pelham Art Center zoom links are sent by email 1-2 hours prior to event. To ensure you can join on time, please use the zoom link to register at least 15 minutes before start time. Make sure info@pelhamartcenter.org is not bouncing to your spam folder. Thank you!

Jul 23
Larchmont Public Library
Larchmont, NY 10538

Thursday, July 23 from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm

Thursday, July 23rd at 2:00 pm. Germany has hosted two Summer Olympics in 1936 and 1972. There is a stain on both athletic competitions. The 1936 Berlin Olympics was where Americans Marty Glickman and Sam Stoller were denied an opportunity to compete, and Gretel Bergman was not allowed on the German Olympic team because they were all Jewish. It is the story of how some Americans wanted to boycott the Games because not doing so would legitimize the Nazi regime.During the 1972 games, the Black September attack happened. Mark Spitz won his gold medals at Munich and was considered a high value target as the terrorist attack in the Olympics Village was unfolding. Spitz was whisked out. The International Olympic Committee did not acknowledge the tragedy until 2016. If you miss having an Olympics this program is for you.Evan Weiner is a speaker, author, with a radio and TV background. Who has worked with Marty Glickman, knew Sam Stoller and interviewed Gretel Bergman. To join Evan for this live discussion on Zoom, request an invite by clicking HERE

Solo exhibitions include Bronx Museum, NY, Lyons Wier Gallery, NYC, WallWorks NY, Bronx, Hampden Gallery, University of Amherst, MA, Montserrat College of Art, Beverly, MA, The Morris Museum, Morristown, NJ, The Hunterdon Art Museum, Clinton, NJ, The New Jersey State Museum, Trenton, Safe-T-Gallery, Brooklyn, NY, Bronx River Art Center, NY, The College of New Rochelle, NY and the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey, Summit. “The landscape that attracts me is that of the city, or more specifically, the fringes of the city, abandoned and decaying structures, urban waterways, and graffiti laced walls, where I find grit and beauty in equal measure. Each site has its own story to tell and through patient observation acquired over months of paintng on location, I work to bring that story to life and to capture the visual poetry of these places.” Please note: Pelham Art Center zoom links are sent by email 1-2 hours prior to event.
