Talking Technophobia in Film - "Back to the Future" from Lmctv
“Be afraid. Be very afraid.” From the very beginning, Hollywood movies have offered a frightening reflection of our deep fear of technology, its effects, and sinister implications. Time-traveling terminators, resurrected dinosaurs, alien invasions, and virtual prisons all give us a sense of just how terrified Hollywood writers, directors, and producers think we are (or should be). In this class we will investigate popular, pivotal movies and discuss their fears, warnings, and possible solutions to this ever-increasing cultural technophobia. Discussion topics will include: “the mad scientist and you,” “ghosts in the machines,” “malfunctioning machinations,” “risks and rewards,” and “the power of human ingenuity.” This month's Film will be: Back to the Future (1985).

The Lonely Heartstring Band from Emelin Theatre
Nourished by deep roots in the expansive canon of traditional American music The Lonely Heartstring Band embodies the modern American condition — an understanding and reverence for the past that informs a push into the future. George Clements (guitar vocals) Patrick M'Gonigle (fiddle vocals) Charles Clements (bass vocals) Maddie Witler (mandolin) and Gabe Hirshfeld (banjo) bring together their own musical styles to create a sound greater than the sum of its parts.Combining soulful instrumental virtuosity with soaring three-part harmonies their growing repertoire of original songs and compositions showcases not only their considerable talents but a dedication to meaningful roots-conscious music. Since their beginnings in 2012 The Lonely Heartstring Band has been on the rise and shows no sign of slowing down. With their 2015 IBMA Momentum Award and their 2016 release of their debut full-length album Deep Waters on Rounder Records this young band is at the front edge of a significant career. Already they have generated a devoted following of music-lovers across North America performing and headlining at major music festivals and historic venues from Western Canada to California from Kentucky to New Hampshire. Whether it’s a festival stage theatre or intimate listening room The Lonely Heartstring Band always delivers a dynamic diverse and heartfelt performance. Over the last three years of touring the band has crafted shows that generate a genuine connection and bring crowds to their feet. Eager to hit the road again in 2019 to promote their second album Smoke & Ashes The Lonely Heartstring Band will continue bringing thoughtful energetic and memorable performances to audiences across the country and around the world with a stop at the Emelin!

Peter Pan from Emelin Theatre
Emelin Theatre 153 Library Ln, Mamaroneck, New York 10543 (map)
TheaterWorksUSA’s production of Peter Pan is based on John Caird and Trevor Nunn’s 1982 adaptation of the J.M. Barrie play, which was originally developed for London’s Royal Shakespeare Company. In the spirit of the original tale, this production tells the story through the eyes of six children living in Edwardian England. Together, they transform the Darling family nursery into Neverland, turning pillows into clouds, long-johns into shadows, an ironing board into a ship’s plank, and antique snowshoes into a crocodile's snapping jaws. This enchanting production celebrates childhood and captures the magic of the imagination. A TheatreWorksUSA production. Ages 3 and up

Holiday Crafting from Nature for Families from Sheldrake Environmental Center
Join us for our nature-inspired craft-making program. Children aged 2–12 and their grownups are invited to learn, create, and, most importantly, have fun together. We’re feeling winter approaching and will be focusing on two creatures that stay active with us throughout the season. The owl and squirrel are incredible survivors of the cold months. Let’s celebrate them with some stories, crafts, a walk (weather permitting), and some games. Build your own owl or squirrel using objects from nature that we collect. For younger crafters, there will be a holiday clementine and clove craft. We’ll also serve a toasty winter treat to warm us all up. Come to Sheldrake for some cozy winter fun! Register in advance; space is limited.

Stanley Jordan Plays Jimi from Emelin Theatre
World-renowned guitarist Stanley Jordan has developed a new live show called “Stanley Jordan Plays Jimi.” This is a tribute show, but it’s not pure imitation. Instead Stanley builds on Jimi’s legacy in a myriad of creative way. As Stanley explains it, “This is my fantasy Jimi Hendrix concert if Jimi were still alive and playing today. By re-imagining his music and channeling his persona I try to bring that fantasy to life.” It may be surprising that a rock legend like Hendrix would get so much love from a jazz legend like Jordan. Stanley’s 1985 album Magic Touch was #1 on Billboard’s jazz chart for 51 weeks, and Stanley has shared the stage or recorded with jazz artists such as Benny Carter, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis and Billy Cobham. But again, hearing it from Stanley, “I actually played rock and blues before I played jazz. In fact, Jimi’s constant searching for new sounds inspired me to move toward jazz in the first place.” It may also be surprising that Stanley Jordan would take on a project like this. After all, Stanley is a well-known guitarist with a signature style, has four Grammy nominations, a cameo in a Blake Edwards film (Blind Date), and a host of TV appearances over a long career including “Jimmy Fallon,” “David Letterman,” “Jay Leno” and “Johnny Carson” to name a few. Stanley explains he took on a project like this because, “I feel a strong connection to Jimi Hendrix because he was the first guitarist I emulated as a child. Out of love for Jimi and his music I feel a strong desire to try to keep his legacy alive.” In recent years, Stanley has performed with many artists in the rock and jam band worlds, including the Dave Matthews Band, Umphrey’s McGee, Moe. and more. Stanley says, “Returning to my rock roots has been an absolute joy artistically, and with this project I’m taking that to a new level.”
