Food for the Body & Soul: Goizueta Gardens Evolve in a Global Pandemic
Sep 30
Atlanta History Center
Online Event

Wednesday, September 30 from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm

Atlanta History Center

Goizueta Gardens at the Atlanta History Center is a place to unplug and unwind in the beauty of nature—a place to learn, explore, and be inspired. This 33-acre landscape holds nine distinct ecologically beneficial and educational gardens, including the Entrance Gardens and Smith Farm, which will feed your soul, your mind, and local communities in need. Sarah Roberts, Olga C. de Goizueta Vice President, will share stories about the newly opened Entrance Gardens, inspired by the New Perennial Movement. Using over 15,000 native and non-native species selected to benefit pollinators and withstand challenging weather and soil conditions, these gardens are a work of art, engaging and educating visitors year-round about sustainable gardening practices. Roberts will discuss the transformation of a 140-year-old white oak tree into a 60x30 foot expansive tree table, adding a unique element to the Entrance Gardens that offer a place of rest to take in the butterflies and birdsong, while having a socially distant picnic. Emily Roberts, Director of Urban Agriculture, manages the landscape of Smith Farm, a representation of a working slaveholding farm from the Atlanta area in the 1860s. Roberts will discuss the history of the enslaved people’s garden, the kitchen garden, and the crops at the Smith Farm, and her ongoing work to grow crops for production rather than for educational purposes alone. With the outbreak of COVID-19 the need for food among elderly and vulnerable populations is higher than ever. Food insecurity is worsening in our area, with disproportionate effects on Black community members. Atlanta History Center is partnering with Concrete Jungle to address this issue by delivering groceries weekly to neighbors experiencing food insecurity. Roberts will discuss the importance of making connections between the past and present when it comes to racism, injustice, and food access in nineteenth century and present-day Atlanta. Staci Catron, Cherokee Garden Library Director, manages more than 32,000 books, photographs, manuscripts, seed catalogs, and landscape drawings included in the Cherokee Garden Library collection at the Kenan Research Center. These rare and valuable resources tell the story of horticulture and botanical history in the Southeastern United States and areas of influence throughout America, Europe, Asia, and beyond. In addition to serving researchers daily, the Garden Library assists the Goizueta Gardens curators with resources that support their projects and work throughout the year. This virtual event is free and open to the public. Registration required.

Tim Weiner in conversation with Politico’s Natasha Bertrand
Oct 1
Atlanta History Center
Online Event

Thursday, October 1 from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm

Atlanta History Center

With vivid storytelling and riveting insider accounts, Weiner traces the roots of political warfare – the conflict America and Russia have waged with espionage, sabotage, diplomacy and disinformation – from 1945 until 2020. America won the cold war, but Russia is winning today. Vladimir Putin helped to put his chosen candidate in the White House with a covert campaign that continues to this moment. Putin’s Russia has revived Soviet-era intelligence operations gaining ever more potent information from—and influence over—the American people and government. Yet the US has put little power into its defense. This has put American democracy in peril. Weiner takes us behind closed doors, illuminating Russian and American intelligence operations and their consequences. To get to the heart of what is at stake and find potential solutions, he examines long-running 20th century CIA operations, the global political machinations of the Soviet KGB around the world, the erosion of American political warfare after the Cold War, and how 21st century Russia has kept the cold war alive. The Folly and the Glory is an urgent call to our leaders and citizens to understand the nature of political warfare – and to change course before it’s too late. Tim Weiner has won the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award for his reporting and writing on national security and intelligence. He covered the CIA, the war in Afghanistan, and crises and conflicts in fourteen nations for The New York Times. Weiner has taught history and writing at Princeton and Columbia. The Folly and the Glory is his sixth book. This virtual event is free and open to the public. The Folly and the Glory is available for purchase online at A Cappella Books. Promotional language provided by publisher.

Saturday, October 3 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm

Want to try your hand on an IBM punchcard machine? Punched cards were widely used through much of the 20th century in the data processing industry, where specialized and increasingly complex unit record machines, organized into semiautomatic data processing systems, used punched cards for data input, output, and storage. Critical record keeping was done on punchcards across many industries and dropping a stack of cards was a disaster. Come learn more about how this machine was used and punch your own souvenir card to take home during the demo on Saturday from 2-4PM! Museum is open Friday 12-5PM and Saturday 10AM-5PM.

Special considerations are in place for the safety of Audubon volunteers and participants, including wearing masks and limiting bird walks to 12 people. Details and registration are available on the Georgia Audubon Society website. Always check the GAS site the night before a scheduled field trip for updates. This is a free event in partnership with the Georgia Audubon Society. Bring binoculars and wear comfortable walking shoes. The walk starts at the Andrews Drive entrance to Atlanta History Center. Online Event

Monday, October 5 from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm

It may surprise you to learn that there are over seven million horses in America—even more than when they were the only means of transportation—and nearly two million horse owners. Acclaimed journalist and avid equestrian Sarah Maslin Nir is one of them she began riding horses when she was just two years old and hasn’t stopped since. Horse Crazy is a fascinating funny and moving love letter to these graceful animals and the people who—like her—are obsessed with them. It is also a coming-of-age story of Nir growing up an outsider within the world’s most elite inner circles and finding her true north in horses. Nir takes readers into the lesser-known corners of the riding world and profiles some of its most captivating figures. We meet Monty Roberts the California trainer whose prowess earned him the nickname “the man who listens to horses ” and his pet deer George and Ann Blair who at their riding academy on a tiny island in Manhattan’s Harlem River seek to resurrect the erased legacy of the African American cowboy and Francesca Kelly whose love for an Indian nobleman shaped her life’s mission: to protect an endangered Indian breed of horse and bring them to America. Woven into these compelling character studies Nir shares her own moving personal narrative. She details her father’s harrowing tale of surviving the Holocaust and describes an enchanted but deeply lonely upbringing in Manhattan where horses became her family. She found them even in the middle of the city in a stable disguised in an old townhouse and in Central Park when she chased down truants as an auxiliary mounted patrol officer. And she speaks candidly of how horses have helped her overcome heartbreak and loss. Sarah Maslin Nir is a staff reporter for The New York Times. Nir was a Finalist for the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for “Unvarnished ” her more than yearlong investigation into New York City’s nail salon industry that documented the exploitative labor practices and health issues manicurists face. Before becoming a staff reporter Nir freelanced for eleven sections of the paper traveling to the Alaskan wilderness in search of people who prefer to live in isolation and to post-earthquake Haiti. She began as the New York Times’s nightlife columnist covering 252 parties in eighteen months and continued on to a career that has taken her from covering kidnappings by terrorists in Benin West Africa to wildfires in California and everything in between. A born and raised Manhattanite Nir earned a masters at the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism and graduated from Columbia University where she studied politics and philosophy. Virtual Author Talk with John Brennan
Oct 6
Atlanta History Center
Online Event

Tuesday, October 6 from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm

Atlanta History Center

Friday, January 6, 2017: On that day, as always, John Brennan’s alarm clock was set to go off at 4:15 a.m. But nothing else about that day would be routine. That day marked his first and only security briefing with President-elect Donald Trump. And it was also the day John Brennan said his final farewell to Owen Brennan, his father, the man who had taught him the lessons of goodness, integrity, and honor that had shaped the course of an unparalleled career serving his country from within the intelligence community. In this brutally honest memoir, Brennan, the son of an Irish immigrant who settled in New Jersey, describes the life that took him from being a young CIA recruit enamored with the mystique of spy work, secretly defiant enough to drive a motorcycle and sport a diamond earring, and invigorated by his travels in the Middle East to being the most powerful individual in American intelligence. He details his experiences with very different presidents and what it’s been like to bear responsibility for some of the nation’s most crucial and polarizing national security decisions. He pulls back the curtain on the inner workings of the Agency, describing the selfless, patriotic, and invisible work of the women and men involved in national security. He also examines the insularity, arrogance, and myopia that have, at times, undermined its reputation in the eyes of the American people and of members of other branches of government. Through topics ranging from George W. Bush’s intervention in Iraq to his thoughts on the CIA’s controversial use of enhanced interrogation techniques to his eye-opening account of the planning of the raid that resulted in Bin Ladin’s death to his realization that Russia had interfered with the 2016 election, Brennan brings the reader behind the scenes of some of the most crucial moments in recent U.S. history. He also candidly discusses the times he has failed to live up to his own high standards and the very public fallouts that have resulted. With its behind-the-scenes look at how major U.S. national security policies and actions unfolded during his long and distinguished career—especially during his eight years in the Obama administration—John Brennan’s memoir is a work of history with strong implications for the future of America and our country’s relationships with other world powers. John O. Brennan was one of President Obama's most trusted national security advisors during all eight years of the Obama Administration, first as assistant to the president for homeland security and counterterrorism and then as director of the Central Intelligence Agency. Mr. Brennan had previously worked in the CIA from 1980 to 2005, where he specialized in Middle Eastern affairs and counterterrorism and served as President Clinton's daily intelligence briefer. Mr. Brennan received a bachelor's degree in political science from Fordham University in 1977 and a master's degree in government from the University of Texas at Austin in 1980.
