The Odyssey
Oct 15
Purdue Convocations
Loeb Playhouse, 128 Memorial Mall, West Lafayette , IN, 47907, United States

Tuesday, October 15 at 7:30 pm

Purdue Convocations

“Of the many things hidden from the knowledge of man, nothing is more unintelligible than the human heart.” Legendary poet Homer uttered those words, even as his literary works disproved them. Across centuries and civilizations, his epic poem The Odyssey became one of the world’s most famous tales. This mighty, moving story follows Odysseus on his decade-long journey home from war—using skill, strength and intellect to survive a fantastical array of creatures, sorcerers, monsters and divine forces. In the tradition of oral performance by skilled bards across the Mediterranean, Aquila Theatre brings The Odyssey to life onstage. A tree of life from which Western fiction grew, The Odyssey remains a testament to the human spirit, the will to wander and the yearning for home. This performance is part of a two-production mini-residency with Aquila Theatre Company. Following Aquila’s dynamic production of Frankenstein last season, Convocations will again engender deep curricular engagement across campus with stage adaptations of the iconic literary works, Homer’s Odyssey and Orwell’s 1984. PRE-SHOW TALK | 6:30PM | STEWART CENTER 279Join Dr. Mike Johnston, an Associate Professor in the Department of English, and Dr. Daniel Conner, Assistant Professor of Teaching in the School of Languages and Cultures, for a discussion about the evening’s performance. PLEASE NOTE: The Aquila Theatre production of The Odyssey will include simulated gunshots (audio) and replica/dummy firearms.  2019/20 BIG READPurdue’s Big Read is designed to enrich Purdue and Greater Lafayette through literature. Each year we select a great book, create a calendar of engaging events, including lectures, book group discussions, performances, workshops and author visits, and then provide free copies of the text to the community. Studies show that book ownership contributes to academic achievement, educational attainment, and economic development. The 2019-2020 selection is Emily Wilson’s splendid translation of The Odyssey. Oct 16 - Oct 17
Purdue Convocations
Loeb Playhouse, 128 Memorial Mall, West Lafayette , IN, 47907, United States

Wednesday, October 16 through October17

Purdue Convocations

For 70 years, George Orwell’s uneasily prescient novel 1984 has both unmoored readers from recognizable reality and helped them ruminate on the society they see. An influential, evocative work of fiction that’s timeless and timely, 1984 finds everyman Winston Smith unexpectedly challenging a world in which totalitarian government reigns supreme, technology is a weapon of propaganda and control, and Big Brother is always watching. It’s a story suited to the bold, ensemble-driven physicality of Aquila Theatre, which will stage a ferocious, provocative and critically praised adaptation of Orwell’s work from award-winning playwright Michael Gene Sullivan. As does the novel, the Aquila Theatre’s production forces its audience to consider: How far are we from Orwell’s dystopian nightmare…or in what ways are we already there? PERFORMANCES Oct. 16 at 7:30PMOct. 17 at 7:30PM Purdue Convocations is pleased to welcome back Aquila Theatre Company after its successful run of Frankenstein at Purdue University in October 2018. PRE-SHOW DISCUSSION | 6:30PM | BOTH NIGHTS | STEWART CENTER 310Join Dr. Swati Srivastava, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science, for a discussion about the evening’s performance.

Purdue Convocations

“Camille Thomas…has all the requisite technique and produces a sound I can only liken to drinking hot chocolate: delicious, warming, full of flavour.” — Gramophone Magazine From nature’s unpredictable whims to impeccable human craftsmanship, the creation of a fine wine and a timeless cello have much in common. When the alchemy is just right, the results are warm, vibrant, life-affirming. Such are the commanding sounds of Paris-born Camille Thomas, a rising-star cellist delivering dynamic virtuosity on her 18th-century Gagliano cello, nicknamed the Château Pape-Clément after Bordeaux’s oldest wine estate. Thomas earned a first-prize finish at 2014’s European Broadcasting Union Competition and a spot on Forbes’ 30 Under 30 list. Here, she’ll let breathe her blend of verve, intimacy and tenderness on a Brahms sonata with otherworldly overtones, Beethoven’s variations on music from The Magic Flute, a movement from Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time, and a soulful, radiant Franck cello sonata. PROGRAMBrahms: Cello Sonata No. 1 in E minor, Op. 38 Beethoven: 7 Variations on Bei Männern, welche Liebe fühlen INTERMISSIONMessiaen: Louange à l’éternité de Jésus Franck: Cello Sonata in A Major, M. 8 PRE-SHOW TALK | 6:30PM | STEWART CENTER 310Join cellist and executive director of the Tippecanoe Chamber Music Society Margot Marlatt for a discussion about the evening’s performance.

The Harlem Renaissance represented an explosively creative, resolutely empowering era—a cornucopia of expression and entertainment that formed America’s music and pursuit for Civil Rights. Today’s performers stoke this wildfire’s embers to spark new innovation in the iconic neighborhood. Created in collaboration with the National Jazz Museum, Harlem 100 presents sounds and ideas from Fats Waller, Duke Ellington, Langston Hughes, Billie Holiday, and more in a modern-day variety-show homage to evenings at the Apollo, Cotton Club or Alhambra. Dubbed a “full-bore entertainer” by The New York Times, Michael Mwenso and his backing band, the Shakes, are joined by special-guest vocalists Vuyo Sotashe and Brianna Thomas and tap dancer Michela Marino Lerman. Harlem 100 is certain to satisfy your soul and let the good times roll. PRE-SHOW TALK | 7PM | STEWART CENTER 310Join Dr. Cornelius Bynum, an Associate Professor in the Department of History, for a discussion about the evening’s performance.

Developed specifically with early childhood learning foundations in mind, this hour long class gives little learners a chance to explore nature and animals in a safe, nurturing environment. Get to know nature through play experiences, art, songs and stories, early science explorations, and of course - special animal friends! Supervised outings to zoo exhibits that complement the lesson may also be included, weather permitting. Each month holds a new lesson - attend one or enjoy them all! Zoo Sprouts is designed to accommodate emerging independence - caregivers may participate with their child, or observe the fun from the adult seating area. Caregivers and children comfortable with drop-off are permitted to do so, provided the child is fully potty-trained. This program is for children 3 and 4 years old with adult caregiver participation optional. The second season will be "Alphabet Zoo." Each month will focus on a new letter as we explore different animals as well as the big, big world around us. Advance registration required. Please note due to space limitation, only one adult may attend with each registered child. For everyone’s enjoyment, unregistered children (including siblings) may not attend. Parents with infants/siblings may wait in the lobby. Cost is $13 per session (Zoo Members save 15%!).

Oxford PlayhouseWritten by David Hastings The “space race” between the United States and the Soviet Union to send the first man to the moon captured the world’s imagination and attention. Experience the 20th century’s most epic adventure in One Small Step, the smash hit from Oxford Playhouse in England. This action-packed tale includes dozens of characters—from German scientists, Russian cosmonauts and American astronauts (including plenty of Purdue’s own) to JFK and Walter Cronkite—all played by two extraordinary actors. Surrounded by vintage electronics and flea-market finds, they deliver inventive visual theatre as comically low-tech as Apollo 11 was high-tech—all while celebrating mankind’s unbridled creativity. Check your oxygen, adjust your space suit and buckle up for the biggest mission of all time! As the Bennet sisters gather at the Darcys’ estate for the holidays the scholarly and socially awkward middle sister Mary is still living with her parents and facing an uncertain future. But the appearance of an unexpected guest at Pemberley—not only “a single man in possession of a good fortune ” but also one who happens to be reading the exact same scientific tome as Mary—raises her hopes both for independence and of finding a true intellectual match.
