Jul 12
The Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum
295 West Avenue, Norwalk, CT 06850

Sunday, July 12 from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm

The Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum

Revolutionary artist Mary Rogers Williams (1857—1907), a baker’s daughter from Hartford, Connecticut, biked and hiked from the Arctic Circle to Naples, exhibited from Paris to Indianapolis, trained at the Art Students League, chafed against art world rules that favored men, wrote thousands of pages about her travels and work, taught at Smith College for nearly two decades, but sadly ended up almost totally obscure. The book, Forever Seeing New Beauties, reproduces her unpublished artworks that capture pensive gowned women, Norwegian slopes reflected in icy waters, saw-tooth rooflines on French chateaux, and incense hazes in Italian chapels, and it offers a vivid portrayal of an adventurer, defying her era’s expectations. Author Eve M. Kahn is an independent scholar specializing in art and architectural history, design and preservation, and was weekly Antiques columnist at The New York Times, 2008—2016. She contributes regularly to the Times, The Magazine Antiques, Apollo, and Atlas Obscura. Photo Credits: Waterford: Early Morning—Waterford (also called Aurore and Morning Waterford), 1897 pastel, 5½ x 7 in. Thursday, July 16 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am

Environmental challenges to Erie Canal construction are topic of July 16 Quarantine Coffee HourJoin the Erie Canal Museum on Facebook Live at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 16 for our weekly Quarantine Coffee Hour. The program is free and open to the public. David Brooks,  Education Director at Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site in Fort Hunter, New York, will discuss the environmental challenges that faced the engineers and workers who began to dig the Erie Canal more than 200 years ago. Humans had been interacting with the region’s geology and environment for thousands of years. However, the vastness of the canal project and the environment it would cut through proved to be its biggest challenges. Prepare for this program by reading Brooks’ feature article on the topic. The story will be available on the Newsroom page of our website Monday, July 13. Share questions beforehand by commenting on the Quarantine Coffee Hour Facebook event, or by emailing derrick@eriecanalmuseum.org. Your questions will help make the program even more informative. And please be sure to ask questions during the discussion! We look forward to seeing you for Quarantine Coffee Hour, live on our Facebook page at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 16! In response to the COVID-19 crisis and to protect visitors, volunteers, and staff, the Museum is closed to the public until further notice. This online event is a great way to learn Canal history as we all do our part to stay safe and healthy. Until we open our doors, we are working diligently to serve you through these types of programs. We greatly appreciate your support as we face financial uncertainty. If you’d like to make a donation to the Museum, please click here.   The Erie Canal Museum is partially supported by a grant from the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.

CANCELLED-Buffalo County Fair
Buffalo County Fairgrounds
Buffalo County Fairgrounds

Tuesday, July 21 through July 28

Buffalo County Fairgrounds

An update on the 2020 Buffalo County Fair The Buffalo County Agriculture Association has made the decision to cancel all in person live events for the 2020 Buffalo County Fair. While this was a difficult decision, the uncertainty of COVID-19 has led us to look at all possible options and we felt it was in the best interest for all involved. It is impossible to predict the scale of this pandemic and our concern is for the health and safety of our community, our attendees, exhibitors, vendors, staff and all those involved with the Buffalo County Fair. We have worked closely with the Buffalo County Extension Staff and will be providing a virtual 4-H Show. Our goal is to support the youth and families of Buffalo County and make this portion of the fair as fair like as possible. As we enter uncharted waters, we are confident that this will best serve the 4-H/FFA side of the fair. All tickets that were purchased with a credit card will be refunded back into that account. It is not necessary to contact the fair office as those ticket holders will soon see their credit. We want to thank all of the loyal Buffalo County Fair patrons, sponsors and volunteers for their continued support. We are more determined to make next year’s Fair even greater, when it’s safer for us to be together again. We hope everyone remains safe and healthy and we cannot wait to see you at the Buffalo County Fair on July 21-27, 2021. To stay up to date on fair events, visit www.buffalocountyfairgrounds.com or connect with us via Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram.
