“Take Heart” is a non-traditional love story, told through a series of images captured during the pandemic by artists Rachael Sokolowski and Suz Karchmer. Love is conveyed through public displays of handmade hearts crafted from everyday materials. These images embody messages of compassion, encouragement, and even outrage against injustice during a time defined by crisis, conflict, and isolation. They also serve as a powerful testament to the resilience and shared humanity that emerged amidst the challenges. “Take Heart” invites us to embrace and carry forward the enduring spirit of compassion and hope as we navigate an uncertain future. Opening Reception on January 4th from 2:00 p.m. Artist Talk on January 23rd at 6:00 p.m.

Come have a magical moment with New York Times bestselling author TJ Klune as he chats about his Cerulean Chronicles, with special emphasis on his newest in the series, Somewhere Beyond the Sea. If you’re new to the Cerulean Chronicles, that’s okay! Let us lay the groundwork. Klune’s The House in the Cerulean Sea introduces us to Linus Baker. A by-the-book caseworker in the Department in Charge of Magical Youth. He's tasked with determining whether six dangerous magical children are likely to bring about the end of the world. Arthur Parnassus is the master of the orphanage. He would do anything to keep the children safe, even if it means the world will burn. And his secrets will come to light. The House in the Cerulean Sea is an enchanting love story, masterfully told, about the profound experience of discovering an unlikely family in an unexpected place―and realizing that family is yours. Klune’s most recent book in the Cerulean Chronicles, Somewhere Beyond the Sea, welcomes us back for Arthur’s story. Arthur Parnassus lives a good life built on the ashes of a bad one. He’s the headmaster of a strange orphanage on a distant and peculiar island, and he hopes to soon be the adoptive father to the six dangerous and magical children who live there. Arthur works hard and loves with his whole heart so none of the children ever feel the neglect and pain that he once felt as an orphan on that very same island so long ago. He is not alone: joining him is the love of his life, Linus Baker, a former caseworker in the Department in Charge of Magical Youth. Together, they will do anything to protect the children. But when Arthur is summoned to make a public statement about his dark past, he finds himself at the helm of a fight for the future that his family, and all magical people, deserve. Somewhere Beyond the Sea is a story of resistance, lovingly told, about the daunting experience of fighting for the life you want to live and doing the work to keep it. If you cannot watch the live session, a recording will be available. This program is CANCELED, we apologize for any inconvenience. THE MAYWORKERS By Gary Garrison Texas, 1900. A rough-neck’s world. Oil country. Cowboys and their cattle. Sweet smellin’, soft-lovin’ women. The rule of this land was simple: Keep an eye towards God, and a hand towards family. Family was something you defended, lied for, suffered for and if you had to, die for. Nobody knew that better than Dayona Rose. As her mother passed away, Dayona was given the honor of Mayworker for her family – a group of women who tended the dead and cared for a family through their grief. To be a Mayworker was God’s work . . . until it wasn’t. The Truro Playwright Collective is a group of established, local playwrights who present staged readings of their full-length works once a month from October through March. Funding in part by the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod

Dr. Randi Lebar will present an inspirational talk about the wild ride she has taken with her mother, pianist Elaine Lebar (born in 1928) who went viral on TikTok in 2020 while living in a memory care unit in Buzzards Bay. Specifically focusing on the magic and power of music in dementia, the talk features many videos of Elaine, and also includes lessons Randi learned along the way about finding meaning and joy in their relationship, in spite of her mother’s mental decline. The presentation is sure to entertain a wide audience, and it will be especially educational and hopeful for those dealing with a loved one in any stage of cognitive decline. Elaine Lebar began playing piano at the age of 3. She graduated from the High School of Music and Art in NYC, received a BA in music from Brooklyn College and an MFA in music education from the University of Missouri. She is an accomplished performer, accompanist and composer. And now, living with dementia, Elaine has become a TikTok star with over 240,000 followers. Our presenter, Randi Lebar, graduated from Cornell's College of Arts and Sciences in 1978 with a BA in Chemistry and went on to receive an MD in 1982 from the University of Maryland School of Medicine. She then served for 11 years in the US Navy, completing her Orthopaedic Surgery residency at the Naval Hospital Oakland. After serving as an orthopaedic surgeon in Okinawa, Japan, Dr. Lebar left the Navy and moved to Maine where she continued her orthopaedic practice. Now retired from medicine, Randi lives in Sagamore where she knits, crafts, gardens, and pursues her passion for all forms of dance. https://brewsterladieslibrary.assabetinteractive.com/calendar/music-in-dementia-with-dr-randi-lebar/

Join us as we chat with the New York Times bestselling author, Amanda Montell about her newest book, The Age of Magical Overthinking: Notes on Modern Irrationality. In a delicious blend of cultural criticism and personal narrative that explores our cognitive biases and the power, disadvantages, and highlights of magical thinking, Amanda Montell now turns her erudite eye to the inner workings of the human mind and its biases in her most personal and electrifying work yet. “Magical thinking” can be broadly defined as the belief that one’s internal thoughts can affect unrelated events in the external world: think of the conviction that one can manifest their way out of poverty, stave off cancer with positive vibes, thwart the apocalypse by learning to can their own peaches, or transform an unhealthy relationship to a glorious one with loyalty alone. In all its forms, magical thinking works in service of restoring agency amid chaos, but in The Age of Magical Overthinking, Montell argues that in the modern information age, our brain’s coping mechanisms have been overloaded, and our irrationality turned up to an eleven. In a series of razor sharp, deeply funny chapters, Montell delves into a cornucopia of the cognitive biases that run rampant in our brains, from how the “halo effect” cultivates worship (and hatred) of larger-than-life celebrities, to how the “sunk cost fallacy” can keep us in detrimental relationships long after we’ve realized they’re not serving us. As she illuminates these concepts with her signature brilliance and wit, Montell’s prevailing message is one of hope, empathy, and ultimately forgiveness for our anxiety-addled human selves. If you have all but lost faith in our ability to reason, Montell aims to make some sense of the senseless. To crack open a window in our minds, and let a warm breeze in. To help quiet the cacophony for a while, or even hear a melody in it. Don't be irrational, register now for a conversation you just don’t want to miss! If you cannot watch the live session, a recording will be available. Winter is here, and with it comes cold nights and blustery weather. On nights like those, there's nothing better than cozying up with a big, warm, steaming bowl of soup. Join Chef Look as we jump back into the library kitchen for this winter's cooking series. This month we’ll be modifying a New England classic to make it more accessible to all, without losing any of the deep complex flavors that make this soup what it is. Chef Look will make Portuguese kale soup, traditionally flavored with seasoned sausage such as linguica, but we’re skipping the meat in favor of a power-packed blend of herbs and spices. Come on by to grab a taste you won't believe is vegan. Registration required. This program has been generously funded by the Friends of the Edgartown Free Public Library. https://edgartownlibrary.assabetinteractive.com/calendar/chef-look-cooks-soup-erior-tastes-series-vegan-kale-soup/

Join us for a reading and discussion of Dr. Michael Pregot’s new book Slavery and Abolitionism on Cape Cod.About The BookAfter Massachusetts legally prohibited its practice in 1780, sea captains became engaged in a variety of ways within its continuance. There were some captains who brought slaves in surreptitiously, while others worked in more indirect ways. Polarizing lines were drawn up. The commonwealth’s maritime industry became quite divided with some fighting for the cause of abolitionism while other sea captains wished only to establish a very slow demise of this endeavor. The book discusses religious views, political perspectives, economic factors, and social movements that existed during the pre-Civil War period.About Dr. Michael PregotDr. Pregot has spent over a half of a century in the field of education. He has served as a Modern Language teacher, a high school principal, a district-wide school superintendent, a professor of education and a University Director of an Educational Leadership Department. He has published several articles and a textbook on the personal dispositions needed to be an effective school leader. Having owned a home on the Cape for over twenty-five years, he is now researching various aspects of local history. The maritime history of the Cape has intrigued him for the past several years. For the past two years, he has examined the complexity of slave trading and the desire for abolitionism within the Bay State.

Interested in joining a book club, but worried you won't like the books? Concerned that the books might be too long to fit into your schedule? We have a solution! We are starting an Any Book Club. What is an any book club you ask? Great question! An any book club is a book club where the members read any book that fits a specific theme or category. Each member will choose their own book for each month, which means you may be reading the same book as someone else, but maybe not! And don't worry, we will provide suggestions each month, in case the theme is new to you. Over the next year we will be using the Mass Center for the Book's 2024 Reading Challenge as our Any Book Club guide. During our meetings we will get to discuss that month's topic as it relates to literature in general, and the books we read in specific. If you choose, you can share with us a brief blurb of your thoughts on any of the books you read, and we will compile an "as recommended by our patrons" readers guide at the end of the year. January's Theme: A book published in or about the year you were born Meetings will take place at the fireplace! Please reach out to Annisha ([email protected]) and/or Victoria ([email protected]) with any questions, or use the button below to register now!

“Take Heart” is a non-traditional love story told through a series of images captured during the pandemic by artists Rachael Sokolowski and Suz Karchmer. These evocative works invite us to embrace the enduring spirit of compassion and hope, inspiring us to carry that spirit forward as we navigate an uncertain future. About the Artists Rachael Sokolowski is a visual artist and writer living in North Truro, Massachusetts. She creates work that serves as a collage of stories, enriched through the addition of language. Her art encourages viewers to reflect on the state of the world, one image at a time. Some of her projects unfold without a defined beginning or end, emerging naturally through a flow of moments. In this instance, the combination of hearts and journal entries coalesced into a visual poem, capturing the essence of a journey and its meaning. Suz Karchmer is a photographer living in Harwich, Massachusetts. She thrives on creativity, curiosity, and moments of discovery. Her photos juxtapose the ordinary with the unexpected as she explores her photographic world through portrait, street, abstract and floral photography. The hearts project was a powerful inspiration culminating in this exhibit; documenting her journey to find hope in the midst of the pandemic and joy in the Outer Cape’s loving response. https://brewsterladieslibrary.assabetinteractive.com/calendar/set-up-take-heart-a-cape-cod-love-story-exhibit/

"Heart In Hand" is a traditional folk art motif, associated with the Shakers, the Amish, and the Pennsylvania Dutch. The imagery is said to represent friendship, love, and truth. The process is known as Scherenschnitte which means “scissor cuts” in German. The art form was developed in Germany and Switzerland in the 16th century and brought to America in the 18th century, primarily by settlers in Pennsylvania. Aren't they beautiful? Today's project will show you how to make this lovely traditional folk art piece with a bit of a twist.

How We Create Pandemics, From Our Bodies to Our Beliefs with Smithsonian Curator Sabrina Sholts Join us for this enlightening presentation with Smithsonian curator Sabrina Sholts as she talks about how the very fact of being human increases our pandemic risks—and gives us the power to save ourselves. The COVID-19 pandemic won't be our last—because what makes us vulnerable to pandemics also makes us human. That is the uncomfortable but all-too-timely message of The Human Disease: How We Create Pandemics, From Our Bodies to Our Beliefs, which travels through history and around the globe to examine how and why pandemics are an inescapable threat of our own making. Drawing on dozens of disciplines—from medicine, epidemiology, and microbiology to anthropology, sociology, ecology, and neuroscience—as well as a unique expertise in public education about emerging infectious diseases, biological anthropologist Sabrina Sholts identifies the human traits and tendencies that double as pandemic liabilities, from the anatomy that defines us to the misperceptions that divide us. Weaving together a wealth of personal experiences, scientific findings, and historical stories, Sholts brings dramatic and much-needed clarity to one of the most profound challenges we face as a species. Though the COVID-19 pandemic looms large in Sholts's account, it is, in fact, just one of the many infectious disease events explored in The Human Disease. With its expansive, evolutionary perspective, the book explains how humanity will continue to face new pandemics because humans cause them, by the ways that we are and the things that we do. By recognizing our risks, Sholts suggests, we can take actions to reduce them. When the next pandemic happens, and how bad it becomes, are largely within our highly capable human hands—and will be determined by what we do with our extraordinary human brains. A presentation you don’t want to miss, register now! If you cannot watch the live session, a recording will be available. Sholts has published widely in academic journals including American Journal of Biological Anthropology, Environmental Health Perspectives, JAMA, PNAS, Scientific Reports, Proceedings of the Royal Society B, and Nature Ecology & Evolution, and written for popular audiences in Scientific American and Smithsonian Magazine. Roadshow Anthropology is a collection of images Mark Chester took from his car while driving the interstates, back roads, and Main Street USA, or while stopped at a red light or in traffic. The book's conception evolved as he was photographing The Bay State: A Multicultural Landscape, Photographs of New Americans. About the Presenter Mark Chester, a professional photographer since 1972, has published his photographs and feature stories in the New York Times, Washington Post, Boston Globe, and Christian Science Monitor, among others. Chester's books, No in America, contains tongue-in-cheek shots of "no" signs; Twosomes is a collection of images juxtaposed with images that are related either by a graphic element, subject or stretch of the imagination. Chester was the photographer for Charles Kuralt's book Dateline America. His photographs are in permanent collections in Baltimore, Brooklyn, Springfield (MA), San Francisco Museums, and others. His newest book, Roadshow Anthropology, has a foreword by Pico Iyer and was published by UMass Press. Born in Baltimore, he grew up in western Massachusetts and now lives on Cape Cod. https://brewsterladieslibrary.assabetinteractive.com/calendar/presentation-of-roadshow-anthropology-by-mark-chester/

Photo Engagement Project – Online The West Tisbury Library presents online gatherings of the Photo Engagement Project (PEP). This event meets on the first Thursday of each month at 5:30pm. The PEP meets on Zoom while the library building remains closed. Please contact the West Tisbury Library to join by emailing [email protected]. Free and open to the public. About the PEP: This monthly gathering is open to people of all different ages, backgrounds, and experiences. Participants do not need to be photographers or live on-island. All are welcome, including children through to seniors, individuals who simply have an appreciation for photography, individuals who would like to learn or are just starting out, students, and amateurs and professionals. The goal is to increase engagement in and enthusiasm for photography, at the level each individual chooses, whilst simultaneously encouraging each individual to do the same for others. In this way, the PEP hopes to promote an ongoing cycle of shared creative activity around the enjoyment of photography, and enhance wellbeing. The PEP does not have a jurying process, and does not critique participants’ work. It is designed to increase accessibility and engagement; help develop confidence, ideas, and connections; and offer opportunities for people to receive, and give, help in a safe and supportive environment. Participants are not required to attend every meeting. At meetings, each participant will be asked to contribute something small, as we all have something to give, as well as learn. Some ideas may include: bringing a few of your own photos, images of a photographer’s work that inspires you, a quote or excerpt from a book/magazine, tips, news of artist opportunities/workshops, or potential project proposals such as a photo walk, printing images, or outreaching to an island organization.

Opal Canyon is one of those rare bands that have the ability to transport their listeners to a place where serenity and serendipity exist in tandem, and emotion is expressed openly and abundantly. They evoke gilded landscapes, bringing to mind the aura and expression of Laurel Canyon, Monterey and other evocative environs known for inspiring soothing sentiments shared with both passion and purpose. They’re sophisticated soundscapes that offer a respite from the perils of the modern world, finding hope in distant horizons, with sounds and notions that veer from longing and regret, to satisfaction and celebration, while allowing optimism to illuminate the path forward. Dystopian Tropes from an Indigenous Perspective: In Conversation with Waubgeshig Rice You’re invited to a riveting conversation with bestselling author Waubgeshig Rice to chat about his newest book Moon of the Turning Leaves, the hotly anticipated sequel to the bestselling novel Moon of the Crusted Snow. It’s been over a decade since a mysterious cataclysm caused a permanent blackout that toppled infrastructure and thrust the world into anarchy. Evan Whitesky led his community in remote northern Ontario off the rez and into the bush, where they’ve been living off the land, rekindling their Anishinaabe traditions in total isolation from the outside world. As new generations are born, and others come of age in the world after everything, Evan’s people are in some ways stronger than ever. But resources in and around their new settlement are beginning to dry up, and the elders warn that they cannot afford to stay indefinitely. Evan and his fifteen-year-old daughter, Nangohns, are elected to lead a small scouting party on a months-long trip to their traditional home on the north shore of Lake Huron—to seek new beginnings and discover what kind of life—and what dangers—still exist in the lands to the south. Moon of the Turning Leaves is Rice’s exhilarating return to the world first explored in the phenomenal breakout bestseller Moon of the Crusted Snow: a brooding story of survival, resilience, Indigenous identity, and rebirth. Join us for Dr Michael Pregot's discussion of his book Slavery and Abolitionism on Cape Cod: A Massachusetts Incongruity. From the era of the Puritans right through to the end of the Revolutionary War, Boston was a central hub for the slave trade. After Massachusetts legally prohibited its practice in 1780, sea captains became engaged in a variety of ways within its continuance. While some captains brought in enslaved people surreptitiously, others enhanced the slave market in other indirect ways. The commonwealth’s maritime industry became quite divided with some fighting for the cause of abolitionism while other captains wishing only to witness a very slow demise of this profitable endeavor. Dr Micael Pregot's book discusses religious views, political platforms, economic factors, and social movements that existed during the pre-Civil War period. Sharing several profiles of notable Black enslaved people living in Massachusetts, Dr. Pregot demonstrates the enormous contributions made to the overall growth of our country.

Join us for a environmental author talk with a guest of the Nantucket Conservation Foundation, Ethan Tapper! What does it mean to love a forest? In this talk, Ethan Tapper, a forester, author and content creator from Vermont, will draw from his work as a forester and his bestselling book -- How to Love a Forest: The Bittersweet Work of Tending a Changing World -- to discuss what it means to care for forests and other ecosystems at this moment in time. How do we respond to the harmful legacies of the past? How do we use our species' incredible power to heal rather than to harm? How do we reach towards a better future? In a time in which many believe that “protecting” ecosystems means protecting them from ourselves, Ethan argues that humans must take action to help ecosystems heal and to move into a more abundant future. Ethan’s message is at once compassionate and pragmatic, clear-eyed and hopeful, sobering and inspiring – a powerful new idea for how we can build a world that works for all of its ecosystems and all of its people.
