Our monthly cooking series continues with chef Christopher Look creating delicious dishes live from his own kitchen. A professional chef for almost twenty years, Chris is one of the most imaginative cooks we know, and his affable personality makes him a natural teacher. Get a preview of Chris’s style on his library cooking blog Trash Panda. January kicks off soup season and Chris has something really special this month - chowdah! And, true to form, this recipe is unlike any you’ve had before. We'll learn how to make an amazing mix to steam the quahogs in. We’ll also learn about fond (French for “base” or “foundation”) and layering flavors to create a perfect soup. Emphasis will be on the timing - when to add things to the pot - and on good temperature control. Join us and learn how to make, in Chris’s words, “ the most delicious thing in existence.” Join the fun and request the link at programs@edgartownlibrary.org. This program has been generously funded by the Friends of the Edgartown Free Public Library.

However, what is not often contemplated is how our economic system affects all aspects of our life from what we pursue (our purpose) to how we consume and most importantly how we view the environment and stewardship. These latter aspects are implicit in our choices but often overlooked. This is why understanding how our economy works can provide the foundation to not only promote interest in social justice, environmental justice and economic equity, the three pillars of sustainability but also in aligning our culture to better reflect our individual values. This series will address economic literacy and the relationship between our economic actions and economic outcomes. The discussions are meant to both assess and empower individual behavior and the potential for social change. January 8: Defining an economic system: A discussion of social constructionJanuary 15: The role of GDP in cultureJanuary 22: Theory and reality the role of economic agents in consumption and productionJanuary 29: Aligning sustainability with the present economic systemFebruary 5: Reconfiguring the economy from the bottom upFebruary 12: Why explicit discussion of values is important, necessary and significant in defining an economy

Join a weekly virtual book club and read along/read aloud with group leader, Linda Ohlson Graham. Each session will focus on Mrs. Jack: A Biography of Isabella Stewart Gardner by Louise Hall Tharp. Linda Ohlson Graham, will read aloud from the book while encouraging other participants to read along or aloud as well. Beginning Tuesday, January 5 and continuing every Tuesday until the book is finished. Join at any time! Mrs. Jack explores the life of the extraordinary, red-headed Isabella Stewart Gardner (1840-1924), whose life spanned pre-Civil War nineteenth century America through the early twentieth century. Gardner was an American charmer and art collector who came to Beacon Street, Boston from New York and became a legend in her lifetime. After years of collecting art on a small, personal scale, Isabella inherited $1.75 million upon her father’s death in 1891 and was able to begin collecting on a greatly expanded level. Upon purchasing Rembrandt’s Self-Portrait, Age 23 in 1896, Isabella and her husband Jack decided their ambitions as collectors required more space than their residence permitted, and first began to consider the idea of a museum. This dream was realized when, at her husband’s death, she built an enduring memorial–the Gardner museum or Fenway Court. Call the Library at 508-487-7094 to check out a copy and join Linda for the discussion on Zoom! Email araff@clamsnet.org for more information on how to join. Linda Ohlson Graham is a fine photographer and ecstatic poet, named CO Department of Peace Poet Laureate in Oct. 2009, who has sailed thousands of miles, including through the Bahamas, the Caribbean, Central and South America. While living in Denver, Colorado, Linda co-directed the J.M.W. Turner Museum from 1984 to 1996. Her photography and spiritual writing portray the richness of her life’s experience. Her book EARTH OCEAN HEAVENS can be viewed at https://www.lindaohlsongraham.com.

Welcome to the MV Haiku Club, which will start September 29th, with four zoom-based sessions led by Caroline Joy Adams, author of five published books, including The Power to Write: Seven Keys to Discover Your Writer Within. Her newest title, Have Fun with Haiku, will celebrate its official publication date on December 11, 2020 (which happens to be International Mountain Day – a perfect tie-in, as Haiku is about taking a moment to shift into a new, higher perspective, which mountains so perfectly symbolize).Caroline Joy Adams has been a college professor of Writing and Humanities for many years, in both the Southwest and in New England, and has also taught hundreds of creative writing workshops, most recently in Maui, Hawaii, this winter. She loves to foster creative community in every way that she can, and in the fall of 2019, led a successful series of workshops in Newport, RI, as well as for the Woods Hole Public Library, and also taught an inspiring, well-attended Memoir Workshop at the Vineyard Haven Library. She loves writing in all its many forms, and her approach to Haiku is as a short form of poetic writing that has many variations and flexible guidelines, rather than strict rules or adherence to one rigid traditional form. As part of the MV Haiku Club, then, you will be encouraged to write Haiku that ranges from the serious to the sublime, to the most imaginative and whimsical – and everything in between. And no matter what you come up with, you are sure to be surprised and delighted by the direction your words will take you, whether you are new to writing, or have been a serious writer for years. The MV Haiku Club will also be a great way to connect with others who wish to ignite their creative energies easily and freely, too, in a fun, intriguing, and expressive way. These zoom-based sessions, sponsored by the Vineyard Haven Public Library, will be held on Tuesday evenings, including September 29, October 27, November 24, and December 22, from 6:00 -7:30 p.m. Each session will have a specific theme, and participants will receive a helpful, explanatory PDF file ahead of time with suggested reading and writing assignments for the week’s meeting.November 24 Haiku as Tribute: Theme – Appreciation.December 22 Haiku for the Holidays: Theme -- Celebration.Contact: Anne McDonough : 508 696 4211 x116 : amcdonough@clamsnet.org [Adult]

Truro Library Book ClubThe January selection is Olive, Again: A Novel by Elizabeth Strout. Please email Maggie to receive the Zoom invite to this program. NAMED ONE OF THE TEN BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY PEOPLE AND ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY Time • Vogue • NPR • The Washington Post • Chicago Tribune • Vanity Fair • Entertainment Weekly • BuzzFeed • Esquire • Real Simple • Good Housekeeping • The New York Public Library • The Guardian • Evening Standard • Kirkus Reviews • Publishers Weekly • BookPage Prickly, wry, resistant to change yet ruthlessly honest and deeply empathetic, Olive Kitteridge is “a compelling life force” (San Francisco Chronicle). The New Yorker has said that Elizabeth Strout “animates the ordinary with an astonishing force,” and she has never done so more clearly than in these pages, where the iconic Olive struggles to understand not only herself and her own life but the lives of those around her in the town of Crosby, Maine. Whether with a teenager coming to terms with the loss of her father, a young woman about to give birth during a hilariously inopportune moment, a nurse who confesses a secret high school crush, or a lawyer who struggles with an inheritance she does not want to accept, the unforgettable Olive will continue to startle us, to move us, and to inspire us—in Strout’s words—“to bear the burden of the mystery with as much grace as we can.”

This month we will be discussing the collection of essaysMe Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris: his recent move to Paris has inspired hilarious pieces, including Me Talk Pretty One Day, about his attempts to learn French. His family is another inspiration. You Cant Kill the Rooster is a portrait of his brother who talks incessant hip-hop slang to his bewildered father. And no one hones a finer fury in response to such modern annoyances as restaurant meals presented in ludicrous towers and cashiers with 6-inch fingernails.Copies of the book are available at the South Yarmouth Library and West Yarmouth Library circulation desks, or you can read the ebook on Overdrive/Libby or listen to the audiobook on Hoopla with no wait. Our destiny depends on geography and access to: Guns, Germs, and Steel. To sign up please email: sturgisreference@comcast.net We all live and participate within an economic system.

Readings will be made available online and participants are encouraged to read the material provided before the discussion hour. All meetings will be via Zoom and will start at 6:30 and end by 7:30. To sign up please email: sturgisreference@comcast.net We all live and participate within an economic system.
