A determined Owl builds strength and confidence in this medieval picture book about the real mettle of a hero: wits, humor, and heart. Since the day he hatched, Owl dreamed of becoming a real knight. He may not be the biggest or the strongest, but his sharp nocturnal instincts can help protect the castle, especially since many knights have recently gone missing. While holding guard during Knight Night Watch, Owl is faced with the ultimate trial—a frightening intruder. It’s a daunting duel by any measure. But what Owl lacks in size, he makes up for in good ideas.Full of wordplay and optimism, this surprising display of bravery proves that cleverness (and friendship) can rule over brawn. Written and illustrated by Caldecott Award Honor winner, Christopher Denise.

Linda Wolff lives in Plymouth, MA and recently spent 16 years in Annapolis, MD. She has had a life long interest in art, although her career led her in the direction of becoming a cancer research scientist. She has had the opportunity to study oil and watercolor painting with Walt Bartman and Gavin Glakas (The Yellow Barn Studio, Glen Echo, MD), Jean Brinton-Jaecks (Annapolis, MD), Burton Silverman, (New York) and Mary Whyte, (Chatham, MA). This has led to an intense focus on developing her skill as a painter. The artist likes to paint a variety of subjects including landscapes of New England, Maryland waterways, and European countryside as well as figures, portraits, and still lifes. She focuses on balance of color and using light to bring the eye to specific parts of her paintings. Linda is a juried member of the Cape Cod Art Center and a juried member of the Plymouth Center for the Arts. She has shown her work in many nationally advertised juried shows including shows at The Cape Cod Art Center, Plymouth Center for the Arts, South Shore Art Center and the Maryland Federation of Art https://brewsterladieslibrary.assabetinteractive.com/calendar/set-up-the-art-of-linda-wolff/

In 2016, the Oak Bluffs Public Library celebrated the first week of August with an African American Literature and Culture Festival in honor of the Oak Bluffs Power of Place permanent exhibit in the The Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C. The next year, the library received a sizable donation of African American research resources from a local scholar, which soon became part of our African American collection. Now an annual tradition, the celebration – now called the Sankofa* Festival – is an important part of the library’s commitment to the diversity and inclusion which helped Oak Bluffs stand out as a historic place of belonging for African Americans. The Oak Bluffs Public Library hosts speakers, writers, scholars, artists and performers during the first weekend in August each year to shine a light on the significant Black literature and culture, which are interwoven into the tapestry of Oak Bluffs history. *The Sankofa bird is a symbol of the Akan people of West Africa. The bird, which looks back on itself, means “it is not taboo to go back and reclaim what you left behind”. Because of its significance as an African symbol which teaches that we must go back to our past to move forward, was suggested that the library use the Sankofa bird to designate its African American collection. It was such a fitting concept, that the library renamed its annual festival to the Sankofa Festival in late 2018.

The exhibit is also bolstered by a brief descriptive synopsis of each photograph that one can read as they pass through the exhibit. Clarke’s work will be up for the entire month. Just a few of the poopers that visitors to the Poop Museum will meet, include: - The world’s messiest pooper - The animal that has poop attack powers - The animal that uses poop as protection - The rainbow pooper - The animal that has to hold its poop ALL winter long At The Poop Museum, everyone learns A LOT, and some of the facts that are shared are mind blowing! Welcome to A Taste for Trollope, a Truro Library reading group devoted to the British novel in the 19th century. Anthony Trollope is perhaps the most beloved — and certainly the most prolific — of all the Victorian novelists. He takes his place in a realist tradition that begins with Jane Austen, moves through Trollope and George Eliot, and ends with Henry James. Beginning with Trollope, we will read the great fiction of the Victorian age. And while our selections will be anchored in the realists, we will also explore the gothic tradition by way of the Brontës and the sensation fiction of the 1860s, especially the work of Wilkie Collins. We meet the first and third Thursdays of the month from 4:00 – 5:30. From June through mid-October we gather in person at the Truro Library, and from November through May we meet on Zoom. Trollope is best known for his Barsetshire novels, a collection of books whose agrarian setting is among the most completely imagined places we can find in fiction, easily the equal of Faulkner’s Yoknapatawpha County or Hardy’s Wessex. Please email here for more information. The discussions are led by Jo Citron who holds a Ph.D. in English from Boston University and a J.D. from Northeastern. She has taught at B.U., Bates, Wellesley, and even, for a New York minute, at M.I.T. Between 2016 and 2023, she led study groups at the Harvard Institute for Learning in Retirement, the lifelong learning arm of Harvard’s Division of Continuing Education.

Photo Engagement Project – Online The West Tisbury Library presents online gatherings of the Photo Engagement Project (PEP). This event meets on the first Thursday of each month at 5:30pm. The PEP meets on Zoom while the library building remains closed. Please contact the West Tisbury Library to join by emailing [email protected]. Free and open to the public. About the PEP: This monthly gathering is open to people of all different ages, backgrounds, and experiences. Participants do not need to be photographers or live on-island. All are welcome, including children through to seniors, individuals who simply have an appreciation for photography, individuals who would like to learn or are just starting out, students, and amateurs and professionals. The goal is to increase engagement in and enthusiasm for photography, at the level each individual chooses, whilst simultaneously encouraging each individual to do the same for others. In this way, the PEP hopes to promote an ongoing cycle of shared creative activity around the enjoyment of photography, and enhance wellbeing. The PEP does not have a jurying process, and does not critique participants’ work. It is designed to increase accessibility and engagement; help develop confidence, ideas, and connections; and offer opportunities for people to receive, and give, help in a safe and supportive environment. Participants are not required to attend every meeting. At meetings, each participant will be asked to contribute something small, as we all have something to give, as well as learn. Some ideas may include: bringing a few of your own photos, images of a photographer’s work that inspires you, a quote or excerpt from a book/magazine, tips, news of artist opportunities/workshops, or potential project proposals such as a photo walk, printing images, or outreaching to an island organization.

Dr. Jonathan Koppell: As President of Montclair State University, Koppell advocates for the role of universities as engines of public good that bring enormous value to their communities and the nation. He demonstrates the importance of fostering deep community partnerships, and illustrates the role that higher ed plays in ensuring a diverse leadership pipeline in America. Yet he doesn’t shy away from the critics, speaking to the need for higher education to embrace its shortcomings and to evolve, rather than defend the status quo.Montclair State University is New Jersey’s second largest higher education institution. Montclair is a rare bird, a majority-minority and Hispanic-Serving Institution that is also emerging among the top tier of US doctoral research universities. It is ranked as one of the nation’s leading engines for social mobility based on its ability to integrate access, excellence and student success.Since joining in 2021, Koppell has overseen record enrollment and retention, strategic re-imagination of colleges, and deepened community relationships to make a true difference in the region. This commitment was exemplified by Koppell’s decision to intervene when Bloomfield College, New Jersey’s only Predominantly-Black Institution, faced imminent closure. Montclair successfully engineered Bloomfield’s stabilization and merger into Montclair and is now establishing a model for a differentiated liberal arts college within a public university. He serves on the boards of several nonprofit organizations and has been a visiting scholar at the Brookings Institution, a Markle Fellow at the New America Foundation and a Fulbright Lecturer in Shanghai, China.CLICK HERE FOR TICKETS

She focuses on balance of color and using light to bring the eye to specific parts of her paintings. Linda is a juried member of the Cape Cod Art Center and a juried member of the Plymouth Center for the Arts. Please join us in a book talk with authors Richard Taylor and Tom Dresser as they discuss their new book “Black Homeownership On Martha’s Vineyard”. Martha’s Vineyard has always been a unique island and vacation destination, made even more diversewith the arrival of Black homeowners in the nineteenth century. Early landowners included the formerly enslaved Charles Shearer, who along with his wife, Henrietta, founded Shearer Cottage. However, thefall of the first Black community on the island came in the 1890s, when forty Black and Indigenous people were required to remove their cottages from the Martha’s Vineyard Camp Meeting Association. Despite this painful blow, other families—including the Wests, Joneses and Huberts—bought island homes, challenging restrictive and racist covenants that encumbered the properties. They then passed their homes on to subsequent generations, leading to a legacy of Black homeownership that thrives to this day. Authors Thomas Dresser and Richard Lewis Taylor explore the challenges, triumphs and the sense of community that has endured.

Join us at the historic Katharine Cornell Theater at 51 Spring Street in Vineyard Haven to hear from ultimate insider, Wendy Benchley—renowned global public speaker and ocean conservation advocate, as she narrates how a book and movie shocked the world into loving sharks and the ocean. Wendy will share the incredible story of how JAWS transformed forever the lives of her and her late husband, Peter Benchley, by tapping into our collective fascination with sharks and sparking a pop-culture phenomenon. After JAWS was released, Peter and Wendy dedicated their lives to learning about sharks and becoming a global voice for their protection. Over four decades, they saw firsthand the challenges facing our seas, and came to understand that the biggest threat to sharks was us.Wendy will reel you in with tales about Peter Benchley’s literary family and personal stories about his work as a speechwriter for President Lyndon Johnson and his dedication to writing. She will share firsthand details about the filming of JAWS on Martha's Vineyard in 1974 and her global adventures with Peter on ocean research expeditions with National Geographic. She will also discuss her philanthropic work collaborating with internationally recognized environmental nonprofits, policymakers, and global leaders to champion policies that protect our oceans and recognize their critical role as a natural solution for climate change.Contact: 5086964211 : [email protected] [Adult]

Artworks Lecture - Winslow Homer Winslow Homer is known for his powerful paintings of American life and scenery, especially seascapes. Less well known, but equally important, are his representations of the charged subjects of war, race, politics, and the environment. I will be discussing his life, his works during and after the Civil War, and his legacy. Suzanne Altman is an art educator and art historian who has been presenting lectures and courses on art subjects for many years, initially in the NY metro area, and as of 2023, on Cape Cod. She is also a painter who works out of her home studio in South Yarmouth and has exhibited widely. https://bournelibrary.assabetinteractive.com/calendar/art-lecture-winslow-homer/

The classic Skiff is the symbol of Cotuit. For more than a century the colorful fleet has entertained beach fulls of villagers and visitors. Itâs not unusual to see over 30 boats out on a nice weekend day. And yet many whoâve seen the fleet countless times, have never been in a Cotuit Skiff or even seen one up close. And sailboats racingâŚwhatâs that all about?Come learn about the long history of the iconic local craft and the Cotuit Mosquito Yacht Club. Enjoy some up close pictures, a 101 course about how racing works and answers to such questions as why they go so close to the island and story behind all the trophies displayed at the library. As a well-educated spectator, youâll gain a fresh appreciation of the splendor of the fleet when it next cruises by in a stiff breeze. Your guides will be Commodore Olivia Posen, former Commodore Philip Odence and former Commodore Larry Odence (also a Commodore's father and grandfather of another). Please save your seat for this talk.

From the best-selling author of Cork Dork, comes a discussion of Bosker’s latest book, a New York Times bestseller, Get the Picture, a mind-bending journey among the inspired artists and obsessive art fiends who taught me how to see. Kirkus Reviews describes her work as “Immersive reporting along the lines of George Plimpton or Barbara Ehrenreich with her own blend of relentless curiosity, bottomless energy, and a gift for clever formulations that recalls Oscar Wilde . . . [Get the Picture] could not be more fun. A delightful book on an inspiring topic by a writer who could make dust sparkle.”In addition to serving as a contributing writer at The Atlantic, Bosker has written for publications such as The New Yorker, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Food & Wine, The Guardian, and The New Republic. Her writing has been anthologized in the Best American Travel Writing and recognized with awards from the International Association of Culinary Professionals, the Society of Professional Journalists, the Society of American Business Editors and Writers, the Association of Food Journalists, and the MFK Fisher Awards, as well as shortlisted for The Gerald Loeb Awards, the William Saroyan International Prize for Writing, the Deadline Club Awards, among others.CLICK HERE FOR TICKETS

Did you ever wonder about starting or joining a writing group? Barbara E. Struna and Iris G. Leigh have been writing together since 2008. Writing can be a solitary (and sometimes lonely) endeavor. This presentation will discuss how they progressed from their first pages to published books. As part of an ongoing group, they support each other through all aspects of the writing and publishing process. Barbara, the author of six books, including The Old Cape House and her newest, The Old Cape Map, will discuss her books. Iris will talk about her debut novel, Liza’s Secrets. About the Authors Iris Leigh: After retiring from academic and healthcare careers, Iris and her husband moved to Cape Cod. With the support of a long-standing writing group, she wrote, and edited her stories, eventually leading to the publication of her debut novel, Liza’s Secrets by Black Rose Writing. Working with this group of women has been a labor of love and friendship. She is a member of the Cape Cod Writer’s Center and actively takes part in book groups, supporting other writers. Iris has a passion for and was an international presenter on bullying prevention. Liza’s Secrets is a story about a woman being bullied by her husband and her journey to independence. The blending of her professional and artistic careers has been fulfilling. You can follow her on Instagram: irisbell, Facebook: Iris Glazner Leigh Author, and Bookbub: @irisglaznerleigh. We will discuss the present-day challenges the island's food producers face, and the possibilities for Nantucket's farming future. He will highlight innovative solutions that are advancing farmland protection, widespread adoption of climate-smart agriculture, and farmland access across the United States. John is leading American Farmland Trust during a period of rapid growth: 250 staff are working on projects across the U.S. that address the urgent need we have to protect farmland, promote sound farming practices, and keep farmers on the land. Under John’s leadership, AFT has engaged in the most comprehensive study of American land use ever conducted, and helped secure billions of dollars in federal funding to protect farmland and promote climate-smart agriculture. The Golden Ticket to College Admissions Is Not What You Think: Redefining Success for Parents of Teens with Irena Smith, PhD Another college application season is around the corner, and stress is already beginning to ratchet up for teens and their parents. You’re invited to join us for this must-watch talk by Irena Smith, PhD. You will hear about constructive and healthy ways to approach the college application process, preserve your relationship with your teen, and help them define success on their terms instead of chasing the elusive “golden ticket.” Irena is a former Stanford Admissions Officer who has spent 18 years advising accomplished, tightly-wound students in Palo Alto and around the world. She saw firsthand the extreme measures parents took to help their children gain admission to highly selective colleges and the toll it took on the children as well as on their parents. At the same time, Irena’s own children struggled with developmental delays, learning differences, severe depression, and anxiety. She kept her double life—successful college counselor at work, anxious mom at home—tightly under wraps for years until a stunning realization: she was exactly like the anxious parents of the students she worked with, all of whom were equally terrified about their children's future. Irena’s memoir, The Golden Ticket: A Life in College Admissions Essays, which candidly explores her personal as well as professional life, was published in 2023, and she has since devoted her time to speaking out about hard things: the heavy burden of generational expectations, teen and young adult mental health, and the importance of embracing a broader, more generous vision of what it means to succeed. To learn more about Irena’s personal experience as a parent, professional experience as a college admissions officer, and leave with tips on how to help your child approach the application process in practical, healthy ways–register now! If you cannot watch the live session, a recording will be available. Register here: https://libraryc.org/brewsterladieslibrary/52923 About the Presenter: Irena Smith is an author, former Stanford admissions officer, independent college counselor, and mother of three extraordinary children. She emigrated from the former Soviet Union with her parents when she was nine years old. In spite of her fierce insistence that she would never, not ever, learn English, she went on to earn a BA in English and then a PhD in Comparative Literature (both from UCLA, where she received a Distinguished Teaching Assistant Award and Dissertation Year Fellowship). Irena taught literature and composition at UCLA and Stanford before transitioning to college admissions, college advising, and writing. Her recently published memoir, The Golden Ticket: A Life in College Admissions Essays is the winner of the Story Circle Network's Gilda Award, named in honor of comedian Gilda Radner to recognize honest, authentic writing that "makes us laugh even when we want to cry." It's been described by Forbes as “captivating and smart… a potential antidote to the fevered belief that being admitted to an elite college will spell the difference between a successful life vs. a doomed future.” She has given a TEDx talk on humanizing the college application process and writes about parenting, college admissions, and redefining success in her weekly Substack newsletter, The Golden Ticket (is not what you think). You can also find her on Substack at Personal Statements. https://brewsterladieslibrary.assabetinteractive.com/calendar/virtual-speaker-series-college-admissions-isnt-what-you-think-success-for-parents-of-teens-w-irena-smith-phd/

Nantucket summer resident Clara Bingham's new book, THE MOVEMENT: How Women’s Liberation Transformed Aerica 1963-1973 (Atria/One Signal; July 30, 2024) is an oral history of the integral decade that launched the modern feminist movement. In it, she assembles the stories and people at the front of the feminist crusade—Bella Abzug, Shirley Chisholm, RBG, Gloria Steinem, Alice Walker, Billie Jean King, Betty Friedan, the Janes, and much more. It is an important and extensive work- Lynn Sherr calls it an ‘invaluable living history’ and Lesley Stahl says “it’s a joy It’s a for those of us who remember… and for younger people to learn about.” Clara has spoken about her past two books at the Athenaeum—Witness to the Revolution (August 2016) and Class Action (summer 2003), and wrote many chapters of THE MOVEMENT in the Atheneum reading room. Thanks for considering Clara for your speakers series- I look forward to being in touch further.CLICK HERE FOR TICKETS

An Exploration of Friendship, Reckoning, and Hope with novelist Shelby Van Pelt We invite you to join us as we chat with the amazing New York Times bestselling author Shelby Van Pelt about her beloved novel Remarkably Bright Creatures. You don’t want to miss this deep-dive exploration of friendship, reckoning, hope, and so much more! Remarkably Bright Creatures is a luminous debut novel about a widow’s unlikely friendship with a giant Pacific octopus reluctantly residing at the local aquarium—and the truths she finally uncovers about her son’s disappearance 30 years ago. After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in the Puget Sound over 30 years ago. As she works, Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine, but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight tentacles for his human captors—until he forms an unlikely friendship with Tova. Ever the detective, Marcellus deduces what happened the night Tova’s son disappeared. As his affection for Tova grows, Marcellus must use every trick his old, invertebrate body can muster to unearth the truth for her before it’s too late. Charming, compulsively readable, and full of wit, Shelby Van Pelt’s debut novel is a beautiful exploration of friendship, reckoning, and hope–a reminder that sometimes taking a hard look at the past can help uncover a future that once felt impossible. Register now for a conversation you just don't want to miss! If you cannot watch the live session, a recording will be available. Part One: Performance - Carol Cohen as Abigail Adams The time is January 1774. Abigail Adams invites a group of women to Boston for a “Spinning Bee.” They were meetings where the Daughters of Liberty gathered to discuss matters of great concern to Colonists while they spun yarn that could be woven into fabric. The audience is part of the meeting where Abigail introduces several of the women such as historian and author Mercy Otis Warren, poet Phillis Wheatly and Sarah Fulton, the “mother” of the Boston Tea Party. Part Two: Multi-media Presentation Via an informative and visually rich PowerPoint presentation, Carol leaves her role as “Abigail” to provide a close-up look at several members of the Daughters of Liberty, focusing on important contributions they made for Independence. Beginning in modern dress, historian Richard Pickering will describe the Pilgrims' Mayflower voyage, exploration of Cape Cod in November and December 1620, and the harrowing (almost fatal) adventure that led them to select Plymouth as their settlement site. Then, right before your eyes, with historical clothing and artifacts provided by Plimoth Patuxet Museums, he will transform into Mayflower passenger William Brewster. As an eyewitness, Brewster will describe the Pilgrims' trials in founding Plymouth Colony. William Brewster served as Ruling Elder of Plymouth's congregation until his death in 1644. When he was a teenager, Brewster served as secretary to William Davison, one of Queen Elizabeth I's three Secretaries of State. He probably handled the death paperwork for Mary Queen of Scot's execution, and he was with Queen Elizabeth at Windsor during Mary's trial. Davison was sent to the Tower of London after the execution of Mary Queen of Scots, because he became Elizabeth's scapegoat to distance herself from responsibility in the death of her fellow queen. Brewster remained in London, and along with Robert Devereux the ill-fated second Earl of Essex, took care of his master. He saw court intrigue at the highest level, and came to know the dangers of being close to the crown. He chose to return to the English countryside and served as the bailiff of Scrooby Manor, a palace owned by the Archbishop of York. It was here that he became a religious dissident, An abandonment of the Anglican Church that would direct his life toward Holland and New England. Brewster's life exemplifies the sophistication of the men involved in establishing Plymouth. Brewster knew key intellectual and political figures of the day: Francis Bacon, Robert Dudley--the Earl of Leicester, Sir Philip Sydney, Lord Burleigh, and Sir Francis Walsingham. (Burleigh and Walsingham were the source material for Polonius in Hamlet.) This event is offered through the Brewster Historical Society. To reserve your seat by email, contact [email protected] or use our optional donation link at https://www.brewsterhistoricalsociety.org/brewster-historical-society-calendar/2024/7/18/pickering About the Presenter: Richard Pickering is the Deputy Executive Director at Plimoth Patuxet Museums, the living history museum of 17th-century Plymouth Colony and the Wampanoag Homeland. He has been with the Museum for forty years and has served as a historical role player, research associate, Director of Education, and Director of Special Projects. He also studied English and American Studies in graduate programs at the College of William and Mary and the University of Connecticut. He holds a BA in English from Bridgewater State University. Richard serves as the Museum's Senior Historian as well as overseeing development of educational and theatrical programs. He has spoken at the United Nations and Smithsonian National Museum of American History and has appeared on NPR, PBS, History Channel, NECN, NBC News, C-Span, ABC's The Chew and Joan and Melissa: Mother Knows Best with Joan Rivers. He also worked on Ric Burns' film The Pilgrims for American Experience as well as Fox's film on the history of Thanksgiving hosted by Brian Kilmeade, and the Smithsonian Channel documentary on Thanksgiving that debuted at the Museum in November before international broadcast. https://brewsterladieslibrary.assabetinteractive.com/calendar/event-with-the-brewster-historical-society/

Have you ever wanted to commission a personal poem from a professional poet? Join us on August 23rd anytime from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. to do just that. Melissa Roberts Weidman, the Spontaneo Poet, will set up shop here with several of her vintage working typewriters. Give her any topic, sheâll ask you a few quick questions and in the next 15 minutes, type you a custom poem incorporating your thoughts. Sheâll perform it for you and you can take it home in a sturdy manila envelope. You can also try typing on one of her machines yourself â kids welcome! Weidman has been poetry busking on Cape Cod for the past three years, writing hundreds of poems on requested topics, most commonly love, grief, heartbreak, friendship, food and pets. Writing a poem in the moment on a tool that doesnât allow for easy changes is a special challenge. âThereâs no time to think or edit, so I have to trust my gut and go with what shows up on the page,â she says. âIâve been surprised and thrilled to discover that it works â most of my clients cry, hug me and exclaim over how perfectly the poem expresses feelings they couldnât find the words for themselves.â âTypewriters are an old-school antidote,â she continues. âAll ages are attracted to these enduring beautiful machines. Theyâre designed to connect to writing without the endless distractions of modern technology. And theyâre so simple and fun to use â most kids have never seen or touched one, but they learn how within minutes.â Thereâs no charge for this event, which is funded by a Mid Cape Cultural Grant as part of the Cotuit Libraryâs 150th Anniversary celebration â first come, first serve. For more info, please go to www.spontaneopoet.com or https://www.cotuitlibrary.org/events.html Melissa Roberts Weidman is a poet, editor, musician, trainer and facilitator working with young people and elders throughout Southeast MA for the past thirty years. She has extensive training in writing, conflict resolution, dementia awareness/care and hospice. She is currently writing a memoir all in poetry about growing up in New York City. In warm weather, she street busks on Cape Cod, writing poems for strangers on Ruby, her candy-apple-red, cursive-font 1960 Olympia SM4. Her poems are seen on mantels worldwide, shared at memorials, weddings, birthdays and more.
