As leaves fall from their trees, animals huddle against the cold, and frost creeps across windows, everyone knows―winter is on its way!Join a brother and sister as they explore nature and take a stroll through their twinkling town, greeting all the signs of the coming season. In a series of conversations with everything from the setting sun to curious deer, they say goodbye to autumn and welcome the glorious first snow of winter in Kenar Pak's Goodbye Autumn, Hello Winter.

Two Artists’ Perspective: Cape Cod in Landscape Siobhan Curran and Susan Bunbury met four years ago while painting en plein air. Both artists make their home in Bourne, where the beauty of Cape Cod continues to serve as their primary source of inspiration. While their approaches and perspectives are distinct, their work is united by a shared reverence for the region’s natural environment. Through the use of watercolor, acrylic, and oil, each artist translates the shifting light and landscapes of Cape Cod into a visual language uniquely their own. https://bournelibrary.assabetinteractive.com/calendar/art-exhibit-cape-cod-in-landscape-by-siobhan-curran-and-susan-bunbury/

The current exhibit of 42 panels, rescued from the closing Phillips Screw factory in Stoughton, tells the story of a Falmouth boy leaving home to spend 4 years on a round-the-world whaling expedition. Painted in 1944 by Falmouth artist Lloyd Turner Nightingale, the panels trace the voyage of the whaler A. R. Turner as the crew chases whales across the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, from the North Pole to the South Pole, from 1850 to 1854. You'll see the Katherine Lee Bates House and the Congregational Church on the Green as the sailor departs, and the ports visited around the world as they hunted for whales. Artist Karen Rinaldo said the exhibit was made possible by a phone call from Falmouth resident Brian Snow to pick up the display that had spent 75 years in the break room of his family's factory. Local builder Mike Duffany answered Karen's request to take down the 4x8-foot panels. New Wave Printing reduced them to the panels on display. Former Falmouth Library Director Linda Collins took possession of them, and current Director Brian Stokes invites all to visit the exhibit from November 1st through December along the art walk in the Adult Collections Room during library hours. https://falmouthpubliclibrary.assabetinteractive.com/calendar/whaling-panel-display-50/

Former Falmouth Library Director Linda Collins took possession of them, and current Director Brian Stokes invites all to visit the exhibit from November 1st through December along the art walk in the Adult Collections Room during library hours. https://falmouthpubliclibrary.assabetinteractive.com/calendar/whaling-panel-display-56/

Susan McDormand began oil painting about 25 years ago in a little school in Brattleboro, VT called The River Gallery School. Founded by Ric and Barbara Campman, they believe everyone is an artist! The school was given all kinds of large sheets of paper from Vermont's paper mills, hence she learned to work on somewhat fragile surfaces. The Faces you see in this exhibit were "found" in the paper; "Who is with me today?" Sometimes the Face might look like a friend. Though Susan thinks a "Face" primarily represents an emotion or an idea. Perhaps a line from a poem seems to capture the expression or the colors or the mood, especially in the background. Often the mind seems very active and/or the influences from above the body appear. This happens with the colors or swirls, etc. The larger "Places" happen because of the drama of a large sheet of paper! Susan has painted many "places" and again, they seem to appear as open, expansive, and often unknown to her. "Places" are representative of the mysterious world we live in. https://brewsterladieslibrary.assabetinteractive.com/calendar/take-down-faces-and-places-the-art-of-susan-mcdormand/

Photo Engagement Project – Online The West Tisbury Library presents online gatherings of the Photo Engagement Project (PEP). This event meets on the first Thursday of each month at 5:30pm. The PEP meets on Zoom while the library building remains closed. Please contact the West Tisbury Library to join by emailing [email protected]. Free and open to the public. About the PEP: This monthly gathering is open to people of all different ages, backgrounds, and experiences. Participants do not need to be photographers or live on-island. All are welcome, including children through to seniors, individuals who simply have an appreciation for photography, individuals who would like to learn or are just starting out, students, and amateurs and professionals. The goal is to increase engagement in and enthusiasm for photography, at the level each individual chooses, whilst simultaneously encouraging each individual to do the same for others. In this way, the PEP hopes to promote an ongoing cycle of shared creative activity around the enjoyment of photography, and enhance wellbeing. The PEP does not have a jurying process, and does not critique participants’ work. It is designed to increase accessibility and engagement; help develop confidence, ideas, and connections; and offer opportunities for people to receive, and give, help in a safe and supportive environment. Participants are not required to attend every meeting. At meetings, each participant will be asked to contribute something small, as we all have something to give, as well as learn. Some ideas may include: bringing a few of your own photos, images of a photographer’s work that inspires you, a quote or excerpt from a book/magazine, tips, news of artist opportunities/workshops, or potential project proposals such as a photo walk, printing images, or outreaching to an island organization.

In 1995, photographer and teacher Heather Pillar collaborated with Morrie Schwartz to document Morrie during the last six months of his life struggling with ALS. The project illustrates Morrie's philosophies about death and dying through photographs Pillar made of him interacting with family, friends, and caregivers. Over a quarter-century later, Morrie's wisdom resonates with people around the world largely due to the best-selling memoir: Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom. Morrie's warmth and vitality comes through in each photograph to illustrate love and loss and the power of community. Morrie taught people, including Heather - how to live fulfilling lives with love. “It is by facing fears of death that we learn how to live.” Heather Pillar was a news and documentary photographer before teaching in seven countries over four continents in 25 years. Recently repatriated to Brewster, Heather’s exploration of her negatives expands the original story of Morrie’s philosophies in a visual format. About the book: Memento Morrie: Images of Love and Loss published by Daylight Books will be available for purchase. It includes 44 duotones and four outstanding essays from professionals in their own fields plus short stories from interviews with Morrie’s friends and family. Some images are paired with Morrie’s now famous aphorisms giving imagery to the bittersweet themes of end-of-life: building a caring community; friends; family; caregiving; self-care; spirituality; and death and beyond. https://brewsterladieslibrary.assabetinteractive.com/calendar/set-up-memento-morrie-images-of-love-and-loss/

Welcome to our yearlong series in which “America’s Preeminent Presidential Doodler”, Heather Rogers, shares facts, factoids, and fun illustrations about the presidents of these United States. We'll start off at the beginning with George Washington! His lack of biological children made him an attractive starter president — no chance of unleashing a monarchy accidentally! Hooray! He was the grandson of an indentured servant; illegally inoculated his troops; a prominent doctor proposed a three-part plan to bring him back to life. Don't you want to know more? In 2026, journey through Heather's sketchbooks as she shares some of her favorite tidbits, doodles, observations, and resurrection stories about the first 12 presidents on the second Tuesday of every month at 10:30am via Zoom. About the Presenter: Heather Rogers isn’t a historian, an academic, or an impartial storyteller… but she has read more than one book about every U.S. president. Out of spite. She was dubbed “America’s Preeminent Presidential Doodler” by one of her favorite biographers and she’s been repeating it ever since. When she’s not reading or doodling history books, she’s a freelance graphic designer, illustrator, and content creator. To keep her interest during her accidental spite project, Heather Rogers filled hundreds of sketchbook pages doodling her way through presidential biographies. Doing so heightened her curiosity and turned her into an insufferable presidential nerd. Along the way, she discovered unexpected threads connecting seemingly unconnected people, times, and events. She can’t get enough of the weird trivia, coincidences, and quirks. Like the fact that English wasn’t the first language of the first president born in the U.S. Or that a three-part plan was proposed to bring George Washington back to life. Don’t even get her started on William Henry Harrison – he was only president for a month, but she could talk about him for hours. *All illustrations for this series have been created by Heather Rogers and are her property therein. This program will be recorded. All registrants will receive the recording via email within 48 hours of the program. To register to attend, CLICK HERE! https://falmouthpubliclibrary.assabetinteractive.com/calendar/virtual-presidential-series-with-doodler-heather-rogers/

In the best-selling memoir of all time, Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom, Morrie's wisdom changed Mitch's life. Similarly, Heather's collaborative project with Morrie also changed the direction of her life. As an international teacher and now a local teacher here in Massachusetts, Heather will discuss at this reception what she learned from Morrie and address the most asked questions such as how she came to photograph Morrie, the Nightline with Ted Koppel shows and Morrie's books. Come for a heartwarming, informal discussion. Light refreshments served. Some images are paired with Morrie’s now famous aphorisms giving imagery to the bittersweet themes of end-of-life: building a caring community; friends; family; caregiving; self-care; spirituality; and death and beyond. https://brewsterladieslibrary.assabetinteractive.com/calendar/reception-for-memento-morrie-images-of-love-and-loss/

Join us for an online discussion with prominent cultural writer and bestselling author David Brooks on his book, How to Know a Person: The Art of Seeing Others Deeply, in which he helps us pose essential questions: If you want to know a person, what kind of attention should you cast on them? What kind of conversations should you have? What parts of a person’s story should you pay attention to? Driven by his trademark sense of curiosity and determination to grow as a person, Brooks draws from the fields of psychology and neuroscience and the worlds of theater, philosophy, history, and education to present a welcoming, hopeful, integrated approach to human connection. How to Know a Person helps readers become more understanding and considerate toward others, and to find the joy that comes from being seen. Along the way it offers a possible remedy for a society that is riven by fragmentation, hostility, and misperception. The act of seeing another person, Brooks argues, is profoundly creative: How can we look somebody in the eye and see something large in them and, in turn, see something larger in ourselves? How to Know a Person is for anyone searching for connection, and yearning to be understood. Register now to take part in a riveting and timeless conversation on how to connect with people from all walks of life, and why doing so is paramount to our individual and communal growth. If you cannot watch the live session, a recording will be available. In this interactive event, three mystery authors representing will brainstorm on their feet to create a brand new mystery using suggestions provided by the audience. Fun, fast-paced, and fascinating, this improv game offers important insights into mystery writers’ minds and the conventions of the genre. About the authors. Nicole Asselin: Nicole grew up a Navy Brat, and spent her formative high school years in the middle of Pennsylvania but always identified with her New England roots. Nicole’s family is originally from Connecticut, and her Grandpa Asselin introduced her into the Red Sox nation where she has been a member for her whole life, and her Grandma Asselin introduced her to the world of mystery novels. Now those two loves are combined into her Ballpark Mystery series. Titles in the series include Murder at First Pitch and Concession Stand Crimes. Sharon Healy-Yang is passionate about mysteries from the golden age, whether in a book or on the screen. Her fascination with mysteries and the 1940s drives her pleasure in crafting novels that recapture the era's wit, adventure, and suspense. Books in her Jessica Minton series include: Bait and Switch, Letter from a Dead Man, Always Play the Dark Horse, Shadows of a Dark Past and Surprise! Barbara Struna: A storyteller at heart, Struna bases her tales on the history, myth, and legends of Cape Cod and her own personal experiences. She created a contemporary character, amateur sleuth, Nancy Caldwell, the vehicle that moves the story between time periods in alternating chapters. Struna's first two successful novels, The Old Cape House and The Old Cape Teapot were pirate adventures based on the 1717 Cape legend of Maria Hallett and her pirate lover Sam Bellamy, captain of the wrecked ship Whydah. Her research took her on a ten-year journey trying to decipher the facts from the legend and then another three years of crafting her story. Her fifth historical novel, The Old Cape Map, was published in April 2024. The storyline uses dueling timelines to take you back to 1900 and forward to the present-day in Millbury, MA and Cape Cod. It's a tale filled with mystery, suspense, and Spanish gold. Struna is a member of International Thriller Writers; Member in Letters, National League of American Pen Women; Past President of Cape Cod Writers Center; Sisters In Crime, National, New England and writes a blog about the unique facts and myths of Cape Cod.

American Calliope: Mercy Otis Warren and the Writings of a Revolutionary On the eve of the 250th anniversary celebrations of the Declaration of Independence, step back in time and converse with a founding mother, Mercy Otis Warren! Often described as the “muse of the revolution,” Warren brilliantly used her passion for poetry and prose to persuade others to join in the revolutionary cause. Listen and discuss with historian and award-winning educator Michele Gabrielson as she tells the story of how Warren rejected the conventional expectations of women in the 18th century and became the first female historian of the American Revolution from the writings of Warren herself. Bio: Michele Gabrielson is a local history teacher and historic interpreter of the 18th century. When she is not teaching in the classroom, Michele can be found leading tours, lectures, and demonstrations at historic sites in the greater Boston area. She specializes in interpreting Mercy Otis Warren, the history of colonial women printers, the stories of loyalist refugees, and of 18th century chocolate makers! Michele additionally serves as the secretary for the newly formed Mercy Otis Warren Society, dedicated to helping preserve the contributions of Warren, is a member of the Authenticity Standards Committee for Minuteman National Historic Park, and is the coordinator for the Battle Road Guides for the annual reenactment of the Battle of Lexington and Concord. She was awarded a 2024 Rising Star Award for Public History by the Massachusetts History Alliance for her programming titled, “The Revolutionary Classroom,” and named a finalist for the 2024 Massachusetts History Teacher of the Year. She has been named the Massachusetts Daughters of the American Revolution’s Outstanding History Teacher of the Year for 2025 and the 2025 winner of the Fred Graham Award for Excellence in Teaching from the Massachusetts Society of the Cincinnati. https://bournelibrary.assabetinteractive.com/calendar/american-calliope-mercy-otis-warren-and-the-writings-of-a-revolutionary/

Abused, addicted, uneducated, poor, mismanaged, Grammy winners, Oscar nominees, inductees into halls of fame. The eight 20th century women whose lives and music will be highlighted in these performances have many of these things in common. Some came from such lowly beginnings and had so many struggles in their lives, it is hard to believe that they accomplished anything at all. Yet they found their way onto stages, into recording studios, and into films and brought joy to audiences world-wide. Betty Hutton, Edith Piaf, Billie Holiday, and Judy Garland are just a few of these divas. Please come as we explore the lives and music of these women and more. Featuring Stephanie Miele, vocalist, and Roy Campbell, pianist. https://brewsterladieslibrary.assabetinteractive.com/calendar/sunday-concert-series-stephanie-miele/

Be sure to jump start your new year with us as we chat virtually with journalist and author Julia Hotz about her book The Connection Cure: The Prescriptive Power of Movement, Nature, Art, Service, and Belonging. The Connection Cure combines diligent science reporting, moving patient success stories, and surprising self-discovery to help us discover the lasting and life-changing power of social prescribing. Traditionally, when we get sick, health care professionals ask, “What’s the matter with you?” But around the world, teams of doctors, nurses, therapists, and social workers have started to flip the script, asking “What matters to you?” Science shows that social prescribing is effective for treating symptoms of the modern world’s most common ailments—depression, ADHD, addiction, trauma, anxiety, chronic pain, dementia, diabetes, and loneliness. By integrating age-old medicines like art, nature, movement, and volunteer service into patient’s daily lives, social prescriptions are radically changing health and healthcare in more than thirty countries. Julia Hotz travels around the world to survey them —sea-swimming lessons for depression, “culture vitamins” for anxiety, a fishing club for ADHD, a farm-based day-care for dementia, a phone-buddy program for social isolation, and many more. As the first book on social prescribing, The Connection Cure empowers you to find, experience, and implement this revolutionary medicine in your own community. The success stories Julia finds bring a long-known theory to life: if we can change our environment, we can change our health. By reconnecting to what matters to us, we can all start to feel better. Register today to find out how you can use the wisdom of social prescribing to live your best life! If you cannot watch the live session, a recording will be available.
