The GRIT Strength Challenge is a team based strength & fitness challenge utilizing primitive objects that were available during the Florida Seminole War period of 1817 thru 1858. Think of it as a combination of strongman Highland Games and CrossFit with logs and barrels! This event will take place February 26 2021 The event location for the Grit Strength Challenge will be the newly restored Fort King in Ocala Florida site of the start of the 2nd Seminole War. This is entirely an outdoor event. This will be a unique competition and is designed so all fitness levels can participate. Teams will be challenged to move objects over distance similar to what would have been used during the 1800’s: Logs barrels sandbags and more will be used to test your team. Besides GRIT being an amazingly awesome event GRIT is a fundraiser for Fort King National Historic Landmark. Fort King is a 42 acre park in Ocala and the park’s mission is to provide a space that educates the public about the Seminole Wars and the natural resources in our area. We have finished the first phase of our project by constructing the Fort walls and blockhouses on the very site the Fort stood around 200 years ago. 50% of the proceeds of this event will go towards special projects and programming at Fort King. These projects and programs will provide opportunity for our community to connect on a deeper level to the park. Projects will include support for our Time-period Heritage Garden youth programming and forming a Fort King Garrison. Thank you for being a part of GRIT and supporting Fort King National Historic Landmark.

The Horse Fever herd has stood as a testament to the unification of culture and community. In 2005 MCA created a traveling herd of horses dubbed Horse Fever in Motion. Then in 2011 to commemorate the Horse Fever 10th year anniversary MCA created a new herd featuring 31 new artists’ designs. These horses have traveled to events all over Ocala and are deeply cherished by our community. Now the fourth herd has arrived and will be on display at Circle Square Cultural Center for all to see. 1 Million Cups is based on the idea that entrepreneurs network and discover solutions over a million cups of coffee. The program is a free, weekly gathering that helps to build startup communities on a grassroots level. 1 Million Cups is just over 5 years old, and is in over 140 communities across the U.S. Everyone in the community is invited to join us each Wednesday from 9:30am to 10:30 a.m. at the CEP’s Power Plant Business Incubator – 2nd Floor, located at 405 SE Osceola Ave. Ocala. The program’s model is consistent in each city: Every Wednesday morning, two early-stage startups present their companies to an audience of mentors, advisers and other entrepreneurs. Each founder presents for six minutes, followed by a 20-minute question-and-answer session with the audience. The central question asked each week is, “What can we, as a community, do to help you get this idea off the ground?” If you know of someone with a new business idea they’ve been working-on launching or which is less than 3 years old (in any industry!), encourage them to apply to present via http://www.1millioncups.com/ocala We also ask that presenters be unique businesses which they themselves have created, and not franchises. Join us as we celebrate our first MCA Artist Members’ Exhibit of 2021 on Friday, March 5 from 5 to 6:30pm. We’ll have light refreshments available for members & guests. Meet the participating artists, see our latest art exhibit and #SupportLocalArt!Monochromatic March features work from MCA artists members working in all mediums, styles and sizes. The term monochrome comes from the Ancient Greek: monochromos, meaning ‘having one color’. A monochromatic artwork is created using only one color or hue. It can use different shades / tones / tints of one color but, by definition, should contain only ONE base color. Tints are achieved by adding white. Shades and tones are achieved by adding black. For more than a hundred years, artists have used a single color as a vehicle for exploring both the potential and limitations of painting, using this reductive formula to experiment with formal concerns of composition and tonality, or to advance theories related to nature, the sublime and spiritual concerns. Rendered with geometric precision or with the nuance of expressive brushstrokes, the monochrome is an enduring idiom of avant-garde modernism.MCA invites current and new Artist members to submit artwork(s) done in ONE color of choice. Only entries which adhere to a monochromatic color scheme will be accepted. There are no restrictions on content, style, medium or context. Deadline to submit entries is February 22 at midnight. Approximately 12% of the Floridians rely on private wells for home consumption. While public water systems are monitored under the Safe Drinking Water Act private wells are not regulated. Private well users control the management and protection of their wells. Contaminants of concern in drinking water include fecal coliform bacteria and nitrate concentrations of 10 mg/L or more. This webinar is part of the Florida Well Owner Network (FWON) a drinking water quality and septic system education program for Florida residents. Our goal is to educate residents about well water quality and best management practices to ensure well and groundwater protection. Registration: http://bit.ly/395Odd3

A virtual book club hosted by the Appleton Museum of Art, reading “The Painter’s Chair: George Washington and the Making of American Art.”Announcing our new virtual book club that meets once a month on Zoom to discuss works of nonfiction that have been hand selected by Appleton staff. The March meeting will discuss “The Painter’s Chair: George Washington and the Making of American Art,” by Hugh Howard Led by Museum Educator Hollis Mutch, the book club is open to everyone. Participation is free and easy! Buy or borrow the book and read at your own pace. Register for the Appleton Book Club meeting here on Eventbrite. Login details for the Zoom session will be sent in your confirmation email. About this book: When George Washington was born, the New World had virtually no artists. Over the course of his life, a cultural transformation would occur. Nearly everyone regarded Washington as America’s indispensable man, and the early painters and sculptors were no exception. Hugh Howard surveys the founding fathers of American painting through their portraits of Washington. Charles Willson Peale was the comrade-in-arms, John Trumbull the aristocrat, Benjamin West the mentor, and Gilbert Stuart the brilliant wastrel. Their images of Washington fed an immense popular appetite that has never faded, Stuart’s image endures today on the $1 bill. “The Painter’s Chair” is an eloquent narrative of how America’s first painters toiled to create an art worthy of the new republic, and the hero whom they turned into an icon.
