4 Session class, 3 hours each session, for teens through adults/seniors. Registration required. Learn to paint the landscape en Plein air with award-winning landscape artist Tom Nelson. The focus of this extensive class will be to work quickly to capture landscape elements: earth, water, and sky. Later these paintings can be developed to a more finished state. This is the traditional method employed by the artists of the Hudson River School, as well as their European counterparts. Participants will work on small prepared substrates (5 x 7, 8 x 10 inches*) such as artist board, cardboard coated with red or clear acrylic, canvas board, masonite, etc. A special feature of the class will be to learn how to build your own traveling artist box, or pochade box, out of such things as cigar boxes or other repurposed wooden candy boxes, tea boxes, etc. Along with substrates, students should bring: a basic set of oils (an introductory set of small tubes 21ml is fine), a palette, thinner, medium (mixture of linseed oil, thinner, and a dryer such as varnish or Japan dryer), and a Masonite board or clipboard, on which to tape the substrates. Small stretched canvases can also be used. A selection of materials will be available to supplement what the students have. Classes will be on four consecutive Saturdays. In case of rain, the class may be on Sunday.  Classes will be three hours long, including short lectures at the beginning of each class. We will meet first at the Coxsackie  Riverfront park. This project is made possible with funds from the Statewide Community Regrants Program, a program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature and administered by the Greene County Council on the Arts dba CREATE Council for the Arts.
