Circles of Support Social Assets Meeting
Jun 24
KOOTASCA Community Action
Veteran’s Park, Grand Rapids, MN, 10 NE 8th Ave, Grand Rapids, MN, 55744, United States

Thursday, June 24 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm

KOOTASCA Community Action

Social asset programming activities provide an opportunity for people in poverty to build skills, social assets, and engage in community life. Social support through human connections helps to ward off the effects of stress, depression, anxiety and other health problems. Positive social interaction and encouragement builds hope for the future. Weekly facilitated meetings provide a framework for developing relationships across socio economic class and race lines. Social asset building meetings provide a safe, healthy, and consistent atmosphere to grow social skills and self-confidence. While building a social support network, people who engage in Circles of Support learn about resources and community opportunities that can help them achieve their goals. In order to bridge the gap between those who struggle financially in our community and those who do not, non-poor community members are welcomed and encouraged to engage in weekly meeting activities.  In addition to individual development, Circles of Support is an opportunity to learn about poverty about the systemic barriers that keep poverty alive and about how communities respond to poverty. Social Asset building:Poverty is the common denominator that brings people to Circles of Support. In addition to poverty, meeting attendees come from a diverse collection of life experiences that drive them to seek support. Examples include but are not limited to: isolation & lonelinesschemical dependencydivorcecustody issuesdomestic violencecommunity reentry after incarcerationfood insecuritydysfunctional relationshipsphysical disabilities & obesitymental health stabilityhomelessnessgriefrebuilding healthy social supportThe Circles of Support community meets every Thursday evening. Meetings begin at 6:00 pm at Veteran’s Park. A meal is provided each week from 6:00 pm to 6:30 pm. We will meet at the far end of the park near the dog park and pedestrian bridge. Bring a chair if you have one, and dress for the weather. We have some chairs available. Meeting discussions are designed to promote social interaction and learning. Topics revolve around an understanding of one’s self and their community as well as systemic barriers that impact forward mobility. Circles of Support meetings open and close with very specific cognitive restructuring activities that encourage focus on positive aspects of life despite any negativity that may be present. Relationships created through this process value life experiences and allow learning to happen across differences without placing blame. Progress toward self-selected goals is recognized and celebrated. Skill building activities are woven into meetings including financial literacy, self-empowerment, and leadership. Additional activities such as picnics, artistic opportunities, and recreational outings are scheduled throughout the year. EligibilityCircles of Support social asset building activities are open to people experiencing poverty related issues as well as community members who are not in poverty but have an interest in befriending people who struggle with poverty related issues. Meeting attendees must be at least 18 years of ageSobriety at meetings is expected. Meeting attendees are not under the influence of alcohol or drugsMeetings attendees possess the ability to demonstrate appropriate group meeting behaviors and respectful social interactionLearn More About Circles of Support

Tree bark is really special. It protects trees in interesting and mysterious ways and is key to tree health and vigor. The class will be conducted both in the woods and in the shop. The tree species of interest will be paper birch, basswood, black ash, willows, and cedar. During the two days we will consider: how trees grow and in particular how bark develops normally and following damage; how bark is harvested; and preparation and use of bark for making rope, twine, braid, baskets, tar, flour, and other things in which folks might be interested. The class will be at John Zasada’s home near Grand Rapids, MN and the instructors will be Emily Derke, Nate Johnson and John. We will talk about getting permits and various aspects of harvesting bark but only the objects created will be available to take home and not the harvested bark.

Students will (anonymously) submit questions and the leader will find a common thread to address for that night’s topic. They’ll spend a short time discussing the practical answer to the topic then dive into the Bible to back it up. Students will learn not just what God desires of them but how to find those answers in the Bible to the questions they’re asking.

THANK YOU SPONSORS MEDIA SPONSOR Outdoors (covered) under the Jerry and Shirley Miner Family Pavilion at the IRA Civic Center Rain or shineBring a chairNo outside food/drinkBeer/Seltzer options availableNo readmissionDesignated smoking areasNo firearmsNo tentsFREE PARKING!The untimely death of John Denver in 1997 was a tragedy that was felt the world over. Such a void in the musical world left John's ardent fans demanding that his music survive. CBS television responded by producing a made for TV movie: "Take Me Home: the John Denver Story," in which Jim Curry's voice was selected as the voice of John Denver. Jim Curry has now created the ultimate tribute experience, emerging as the top performer of John Denver's music today.  Often performing with John Denver's former band members, Jim Curry's tribute is the first and only full-length John Denver tribute to headline in Las Vegas and has been celebrated nationally and internationally. Demand for Jim Curry's incredible show led him to develop further material for optional symphony orchestra accompaniment.  In an exclusive arrangement with renowned Grammy Award-winning arranger, composer, and conductor Lee Holdridge, Jim and Lee have re-created the symphony scores originally written for John Denver for the benefit of presenters with orchestral venues. True, Jim Curry's natural voice has to be heard, but he also has to be seen to understand the pleasant coincidence that captures the natural essence of John Denver's persona and music. Curry's heartfelt delivery envelops the crowd as multi-platinum hits such as "Rocky Mountain High," "Annie's Song" and "Country Roads" fill the atmosphere.  Superimposed with multi- media images of wildlife photos and videos, this is a show that truly fills up your senses. .fusion-fullwidth.fusion-builder-row-4 a:not(.fusion-button):not(.fusion-builder-module-control):not(.fusion-social-network-icon):not(.fb-icon-element):not(.fusion-countdown-link):not(.fusion-rollover-link):not(.fusion-rollover-gallery):not(.fusion-button-bar):not(.add_to_cart_button):not(.show_details_button):not(.product_type_external):not(.fusion-quick-view):not(.fusion-rollover-title-link):not(.fusion-breadcrumb-link) , .fusion-fullwidth.fusion-builder-row-4 a:not(.fusion-button):not(.fusion-builder-module-control):not(.fusion-social-network-icon):not(.fb-icon-element):not(.fusion-countdown-link):not(.fusion-rollover-link):not(.fusion-rollover-gallery):not(.fusion-button-bar):not(.add_to_cart_button):not(.show_details_button):not(.product_type_external):not(.fusion-quick-view):not(.fusion-rollover-title-link):not(.fusion-breadcrumb-link):before, .fusion-fullwidth.fusion-builder-row-4 a:not(.fusion-button):not(.fusion-builder-module-control):not(.fusion-social-network-icon):not(.fb-icon-element):not(.fusion-countdown-link):not(.fusion-rollover-link):not(.fusion-rollover-gallery):not(.fusion-button-bar):not(.add_to_cart_button):not(.show_details_button):not(.product_type_external):not(.fusion-quick-view):not(.fusion-rollover-title-link):not(.fusion-breadcrumb-link):after {color:
