The Health for Life Program (HeLP) is a free series run regularly by the Westchester County Department of Senior Services and Programs and by Westchester Livable Communities intended for adults aged 55 and older to help manage chronic conditions, better communicate with healthcare providers, reduce pain, and improve overall quality of life. The workshop runs for 6 weeks in April and May and features scientifically grounded topics such as better sleep, proactive health problem solving, nutrition and healthy eating, breathing and relaxation techniques, and mobility. Get the HeLP you need to live your best life!IMPORTANT NOTE: Registrants should expect to attend ALL SIX weekly workshops, as the material covered builds upon the prior sessions. Additionally, the PARAMETERS OF THE LICENSE FOR THIS WORKSHOP REQUIRE PARTICIPANTS TO ATTEND AT LEAST FOUR SESSIONS, INCLUDING THE FIRST AND/OR SECOND SESSION. If you cannot commit to all sessions, this series is probably not for you.

In A History of Jewish People in Scarsdale, Village Historian Jordan Copeland traces the evolution of Jewish life in Scarsdale from a small, localized presence with limited civic participation to full integration and leadership within the community’s social, civic, and cultural institutions. Placing Scarsdale within the broader historical experience of Jews in America, the presentation examines how national and global forces shaped local outcomes.The program explores why Scarsdale became an attractive destination for Jewish families, how its development differed from that of neighboring communities, and the social and institutional barriers Jewish residents faced along the way. Drawing on original research, the talk offers a nuanced account of both achievement and adversity, illuminating how Jews have become an integral part of Scarsdale’s history.Presenter BiographyJordan Copeland is the Scarsdale Village Historian and Vice President of the Scarsdale Historical Society. He conducts original historical research and has contributed to documentary projects and public presentations. His work includes the development of walking tours of downtown Scarsdale and Arthur Manor, educational YouTube videos, and history programs for school groups.His previous presentations include A History of Black People in Scarsdale, How Scarsdale Became Scarsdale, and Solved! The Mystery of Scarsdale’s 1840 Population Decline. They understand the highs and lows, the sleep deprivation, the joys, the pressures, the role shifts, the challenges and even the fears associated with this perinatal period. Babes in arms welcome, but no toddlers please, if possible.This group is a judgement free zone. If you are running late, come anyway! If you are still in your Pajamas, come anyway!  Baby crying and won’t stop fussing, come anyway! We all understand that getting out of the house during the perinatal period is difficult but come anyway! This is time for you to take care of YOU.During the group we will combine brief education about mood and anxiety disorders that can get in the way of enjoying your family forming journey, along with support group time. There will be resources provided and lots of time to give and receive support from other group members.NO REGISTRATION REQUIREDAbout the group leader:Andrea Glover, LCSW, PMHC, has a private practice in Scarsdale, and specializes in perinatal, reproductive, maternal, and menopausal mental health. Note: This program is for people 18 and up.Come to the library for some welcoming, focused time meant to give adult day habilitation groups, people living in congregate housing, and all people 18+ who might receive special care at home an opportunity for social interaction and fun games and activities. This will be a relaxed space set aside for people to visit the library and enjoy themselves. We'll have easy to join games such as UNO, Connect Four, Jenga, and more. There'll be coloring sheets and art supplies for enjoyment and self-expression. People will be free to move around and chat with friends or simply sit peacefully with their own preferred activity. This is meant to be a welcoming and inclusive program. Do you have your own favorite game or idea for a fun activity? We would be thrilled if you reach out to the library to discuss how we can better adapt Thursdays Together to serve caregivers and self-advocates.A librarian will be present to help supervise activities but we do ask that all caregivers or aides accompanying a person or group remain in the room during the program.

The screenplay was written by R. F. Delderfield and William Fairchild and was based on the 1953 novel of the same name by Derrick Boothroyd.All his life, Chayley Broadbent (Gregson) has had the lesson of frugality impressed upon him by his Yorkshire father. When his father dies, Chayley inherits £62,000 (almost £1.5 million today) and the family's clothing factory. When he asks his girlfriend Ethel (Stephen) to marry him, he goes about it in the most unromantic way possible, but she still accepts. Please note that this event was rescheduled from Sunday, February 22 due to a winter storm. All prior registrants have had their registration status transferred to the new date.Frederick Law Olmsted - the namesake of Olmsted Road here in Scarsdale - was one of the foremost American landscape architects, conservationists, and journalists of the 19th century. His work was at the forefront of the movement for Parks For The People, establishing an outstanding legacy of national and urban parks, mostly famously the design of Central Park in Manhattan with his partner Calvert Vaux. Olmsted sought to provide people with landscapes to escape congested urban living and industrial sprawl. Come hear from landscape designer and educator Jennifer Yates as she explores Olmsted's legacy and showcases the natural beauty of the parks he helped to build during a formative time in the nation's history.About the presenterJennifer Yates is an experienced, award-winning Landscape Designer. Her expertise in the complementary fields of architecture, horticulture and the environment enable her to design layered, sustainable, native infused gardens. She has a Bachelor's Degree in Interior Architecture from the Rhode Island School of Design and a certification in organic farming from Northeast Organic Farming Association. She also studied landscape architecture at the New York Botanical Gardens. Jennifer has lectured at botanical gardens around the country on topics like notable garden designers, sustainable garden design, and rain gardens.

Come to the library and join poets Suzanne Cleary and Harriet Shenkman in celebration of National Poetry Month as they read from their new poetry books and providing tips for reading and writing poems. Each reading will be centered around the themes of chance, curious odds, and the varieties of fortune. Suzanne’s The Odds and Harriet’s Re-Coupling each beat the odds by finding a poetry audience. How will you shape yours?About the presentersSuzanne Cleary was born and raised upstate in Binghamton, New York, and has now lived in the New York City area for more than thirty years. She has an MFA in Creative Writing from Washington University, a Ph.D. in Literature and Criticism from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and she currently teaches as a core faculty member at the Creative Writing Program at Converse College. Ms. Cleary's national awards include a Pushcart Prize and the Cecil Hemley Memorial Award of the Poetry Society of America, and residencies at Yaddo and the MacDowell Colony. Her poems have appeared in anthologies including Best American Poetry and Poetry 180, among many others. Her poems have appeared in journals including Atlantic Monthly, Georgia Review, Southern Review, and Poetry London.Harriet Shenkman is the current Poet-in-Residence at Broadview Senior Living and the JCC of Mid-Westchester. She earned a Ph.D. from Fordham University, an M.Ed. from Duke University, and is a professor emerita at City University of New York. Her poetry awards include the Women’s National Book Association Annual Contest and the Women Who Write International Poetry Contest. Her work has appeared in many publications including Westchester Review, The Alexandria Quarterly, The Berru Poetry Series of the Jewish Book Council, and elsewhere.

The workshop runs for 6 weeks in April and May and features scientifically grounded topics such as better sleep, proactive health problem solving, nutrition and healthy eating, breathing and relaxation techniques, and mobility. Get the HeLP you need to live your best life!IMPORTANT NOTE: Registrants should expect to attend ALL SIX weekly workshops, as the material covered builds upon the prior sessions. Additionally, the PARAMETERS OF THE LICENSE FOR THIS WORKSHOP REQUIRE PARTICIPANTS TO ATTEND AT LEAST FOUR SESSIONS, INCLUDING THE FIRST AND/OR SECOND SESSION. If you cannot commit to all sessions, this series is probably not for you.

This monthly meeting is intended for Scarsdale residents who are middle school, junior high, high school, or homeschool students wanting to get involved with the community hub which is the Scarsdale Public Library. You can earn community service credit when you meet with your peers and teen librarain to discuss what you want from your public library's Teen Services Department. We're asking Teen Advisory Board (TAB) members for: input into what programs teens want the Library to offer and when they should be scheduled;ideas for programs/classes teens want to lead/teach for other teens or other age groups (with departmental approval);help promoting programs to classmates and other community members;creative contributions to our Instagram;ideas for how to decorate and equip the Teen Room and Makerspace;requests about what books we should order and in what formats; andsuggestions for partnerships with teachers/organizations where overlap exists between their purposes and those of Scarsdale Public Library, whose mission is to encourage the joy of reading, the exploration of ideas, and the pursuit of lifelong learning for all Scarsdalians.REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED.

Come to the library to reflect and learn about a little known chapter in the history of the Holocaust - the remarkable story of 222 people who survived. The speaker, Monika Jalili, will explain some of the history of the Holocaust in occupied Netherlands, in particular the Westerbork detainment camp used as a staging ground for sending prisoners to concentration camps elsewhere, the Bergen-Belsen prisoner of war camp in Germany, as well as the various efforts to redeem and swap prisoners during World War II. The father of the speaker was just 10 years old when he was part of the 222 prisoners exchanged from the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. Among this larger context, Mrs. Jalili will share some of the personal narrative of her family, their post-war journey, and the lingering pain of memory and second-generation trauma for survivors and their families. By sharing this deeply personal and historical narrative, Mrs. Jalili hopes to foster empathy, connection, and a sense of hope for those navigating their own challenges.About the presenterMonika Jalili, née Bergenthal, was born and raised in New York City, and is a first generation American on her father’s side and second generation on her mother’s side. She’s a musician specializing in Persian music, a French educator, and editor, currently based in Montpellier, France.
