The Youth Room runs a volunteer program for youth in grades 6-12, which is open to Ludlow residents and non-residents. There are 2 options, the afterschool program and the summer program, which coincide with the Ludlow public schools' calendar. Youth may work for part or all of the year. Volunteer work consists of shelving books in the Youth Room, finding books that are on hold or needed by library staff, keeping the Youth Room neat and organized, helping prepare materials for youth programs, helping set up and take down for programs, and odd jobs. Youth Room volunteers generally work one hour per week. The day and time will be agreed upon after the application is received. There are two slots each hour, and volunteers are welcome to work with a friend who is also volunteering. Once the volunteer schedule is set, the volunteer is expected to show up every week on time and work for the entire hour. Volunteers cannot socialize with their friends or watch younger siblings during their work time. If a volunteer will be late or absent, they are expected to notify the Youth Room staff. If a volunteer wishes to discontinue their work at the library before the end of the program term, they are expected to notify Youth Room staff. School year volunteers can work for only part of the school year - for example, they may suspend their volunteer status to participate in a sporting season, as long as they notify Youth Room staff. Summer volunteers are expected to miss no more than 2-3 weeks of the summer. Those who have previously volunteered but needed to discontinue are always welcome back. New summer volunteers are required to attend a training session and read through a training slideshow before their first day of volunteer work. Those beginning their volunteer work during the school year will read through the slideshow and recieve individual training. Youth Room staff will work with the volunteer to determine what their strengths and limitations are and do our best to tailor the work to the volunteer's abilities. Volunteers are expected to communicate with Youth Room staff if they are having difficulty with any work, so that staff can either provide instruction and further training or shift to a task more suitable to the volunteer's abilities. Communication between the Youth Room and the volunteer will take place primarily through email. Volunteers are expected to regularly check their email. Parents will be cc'ed on communications, and volunteers are asked to cc their parents when responding.  If the Youth Room will be unstaffed during a volunteer's work time, we will do our best to notify as soon as possible, though we may not be able to notify in every instance. Volunteer work in the Youth Room counts for National Honor Society credit and most other voluteer requirements.  To apply, click here: Hubbard Library Young Adult Volunteer Application
